Bionic Camera

shadrap

Android Enthusiast
Hey guys, long time since I have posted here. I have been hanging with the iPhone crowd. I know, I know.

Anyways, I am hoping Yoda or someone else in the know could tell me about the camera. I really like the iPhone camera and want to know how the Bionic measures up.

Well to my uneducated guess would be that the Bionic Camera will surpass the iPhone camera; given that the iPhone has a 5 Megapixel and the Bionic a 8 Megapixel. Video shooting: the Bionic does 1080p while the iPhone does 720p.

Just my guess but I'd say the Bionic > iPhone

Those specs speak for themselves, but one key thing is missing: Which iPhone are you comparing?

Light sensors have a lot to do with it, too. An 8MP camera without a good sensor will have shots, at least indoors, that are inferior to a 5MP camera with an excellent light sensor. Not sure which one will rock the Bionic, but it seems to have excellent video recording.

I am talking about the iPhone 4. Specs do not really matter. The iPhone 4 has a better camera than any I have seen. Despite a lower mp or no 1080. I am hoping motorola took some of that extra time on the camera. For example the Photon doesn't come close to the iPhone 4 camera.

I got an old Sony Ericsson candy bar feature phone with a Cybershot camera I could sell ya. That phone took great pix for me.

Looking for a serious answer. I would like to switch back to android for LTE but don't want to sacrifice camera quality.

The majority of Android phones are going to take better pix than an iPhone. About the only person we know with a Bionic to take pix is Yoda. I'd be curious to see some pix he's taken with it.

You could always check the reviews of the DX2 and D3 to get an idea where it's going. I'd imagine it'd be even better with the time they've had to work on that.

I hope the Bionic's camera is better than D3. My friend has the D3 and the iPhone camera is far superior.

I am not bashing, nor am I a fan boy. I pick what ever phone I think is better at the time. I have jumped between iOS and Android several times. Both have their good and bad. The Bionic has me seriously considering switching back, but with 3 kids it's nice to have a phone with a good camera.

A review at PvP comparing the D3 and i4: Motorola Droid 3 vs. iPhone 4 Phone VS Phone

Other important feature to be mention in our comparison is the camera section. We know from the previous iPhone generations that Apple didn’t integrate a performant camera, but this time they have changed it. The iPhone 4 comes equipped with a 5 megapixel camera on the back with autofocus and LED flash and a secondary VGA front facing camera for sharing video calling, but over Wi-Fi only. If you want something more performant than 5MP, the Droid 3 is a good option, boasting an 8 MP with autofocus and LED flash plus other helpful features such as: touch-focus, geo-tagging or face detection. It is completed by a secondary 1.3MP front facing cam for video calls.

Touch focus - more than enough for me to pick it a winner. I can readjust the focus on what *I* think should be focused, not what the camera thinks.

Since you've got a whole passel of kids, take them into a VZW store one day and take lots of pics with the D3 display model - and then send one or a few to yourself via email or MMS and see how they look on your computer at home. If you do a side by side comparison, be sure to take the exact same photos so none of the fanbois (on either side) can claim any issues in your judgment.

8 M is better than 5 M. iphones had some great advantages, but camera was never their strong suit...

Not necessarily - see Digital camera - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The pixel count alone is commonly presumed to indicate the resolution of a camera, but this simple figure of merit is a misconception. Other factors impact a sensor's resolution, including sensor size, lens quality, and the organization of the pixels (for example, a monochrome camera without a Bayer filter mosaic has a higher resolution than a typical color camera).

Where such other factors limit the resolution, a greater pixel count does not improve it, but may rather make the digital images inconveniently large and/or exacerbate image noise. Many digital compact cameras are criticized for having excessive pixels. Sensors can be so small that their 'buckets' can easily overfill; again, resolution of a sensor can become greater than the camera lens could possibly deliver.

Also, look at the image comparison on the right hand side of this section....

but, that manual focus is a winner for me hands down.

Wow guys. Y'all are phone enthusiast. You should know the iPhone 4 camera is still currently the best rated on a smartphone. No current droid compares. This is not fanboyism. The only one that even comes close is the GS2.

Look at any review comparing the cameras and you will see what I am talking about. Megapixels do not mean anything. A 5 could technically be better than a 12. There are other factors.

Should have just said this from the beginning.

Yoda, is the Bionic camera any good? How good comparatively? And if you are hands on, could you post a sample.

Thanks,

Hate to sound condescending, but I think you've already made up your mind...

It will most likely have the same exact camera as the D3. And the same software with the touch focus.

I'm just gonna say trollers gonna troll.

Look at my sign up date and prior post. I am far from trolling and one of the few on the site that has done paid reviews.

Again, I should have addressed the question better. Motorola has taken a long time to get this phone to market. Rebuilding it from the ground up to meet consumer expectation. I was just wondering if part of that extra work went into the camera. Hopefully when Yoda gets back on he can answer the question.

Thanks,

I have ipad 2 camera. and it isnt that good...

so i am clueless what you are talking about.

I'm sure it's not one you're considering but the MyTouch 4g slide supposedly has the best camera out there (after the Nokia N8).

Yea, I thought the camera on the Nokia N8 was the best rated on a phone right now? And I've been hearing good thing about the MyTouch 4G camera too.

Actually, this is exactly what I said (comment #4).

I think that your best bet would be to simply walk into the store on drop day, take a picture of an object with the iPhone, then another with the Bionic, throw the pics on a laptop in your car and take a look.

One will have better quality in low light conditions, or under artificial lighting, or outside, etc. But neither phone will have a perfect camera. The phone camera tech isn't quite there yet, although I think it's very good. But if you're looking for the best picture possible, it's probably best to get the phone you think is nicer, and then buy a Sony SLT-A77 and just wear it around your neck.

If you need a good smartphone to smartphone comparison. Now granted there is not moto option in the bunch (and I think that should tell you something) but it stacks up how the iphone compares to other smartphones.

Blind cameraphone comparison 2 (Results)

I've had an X, X2, and D3 and NONE of them took better pictures than my thunderbolt. The D3 which I assume will have the same camera as the bionic was the worst of the 3. Everything came out with a blue tint. I don't know anything about cameras, so I leave the settings the way they come out of the box.

Jreed and Bluefire thanks for the info and link. I had never saw that one before.

Probably will have to do as suggested and just give it a try on launch day. Really looking forward to this device.

i thought i read a rumor somewhere that Moto had re designed their cameras because they knew that was one area they were still losing to the Iphone. I hope so anyways. The shutter speed and light sensor sucks in a major way on my DX. It takes great pics most of the time if the light is good but in low light the shutter speed and light sensor are a big fail.

The others are right. Megapixels don't really mean anything. I've seen 3mp cameras take better pics than 5 and so on and so forth.

I think everyone here has pointed you in the right direction. These phones take fine pix for viewing in your gallery or on the computer. Try to get them printed, and the quality diminishes greatly.

Mega pixels are a marketing gimmick on cellphones. There's not 8MP of data in a cellphone shot. What do you expect from a pinhole camera? Lens size pretty much dictates quality on these things. That's why the iphone, X and Incredible pretty much output the same quality pix. The X was fine for a high end cell phone. The Bionic will be no worse though the D3 was a surprise not compensating for the bluish LED.
