Root Blackhole ROM help please

flyboy777

Newbie
Noob here! I did as much research as I thought necessary before I started this, and I successfully rooted my SF and downloaded ROM manager along with Titanium backup Pro. I have done a complete backup of my data and apps and want to take the next step into a new ROM. I found what I thought to be a good solution inside ROM manager; blackhole 2.3. I began the process of choosing options of what to include/exclude in the install, but then I get a "installation failed" message at the end when I try to install. I know there is a lot to this process and I don't want to wreck my phone...and I don't want to sound stupid either. I've tried to search for answers to my questions before posting, but I'm still unsure what to do at this point. Please help.

Do you have clockwork recovery? You will have need cwr to flash a rom from rom manager

No I don't...and I'm guessing that's not available on android market; can't seem to find it. Maybe something that I need to download on computer and flash to the phone? If so, I've heard the term "flash" a lot...and not exactly sure what that means and how. Thanks so far!

2.3 is for people running the dj05 leak, you don't want to install that.

Here I go sounding like a noob...but why don't I want that?? I'm not trying to make my phone as fast as possible. I'm just looking for something other than stock without deviating too far from stock appearance.

Hey bud,

Take a deep breath and enjoy your phone, don't start installing (flashing) until you do a lot more reading on all the different forums. You're going to frustrate yourself if you go in blind.

If you want to flash anything check this out:

Clockworkmod installation how to for windows / *nix - xda-developers

But like nos said take your time and read a lot if you jump in to quick your phone may not last to long. But if you do jump the gun you can only flash roms and kernels for "DI01"

It's not that I'm not looking for speed, it's just that I'm not looking to go extensive in overclocking and thus sacrificing battery life. I'm a practical user, and far from a computer techie...

You guys can feel free to level with me. Am I better off just being happy being de-binged and de-bloated via freezing through Titanium and leave well enough alone if I'm not trying to go nuts with this thing? If I were to leave things alone from where I sit, is it known what I would need to do if I just wanted to grab the OTA 2.2 or 2.3 when they arrive?

If you truely want ota then stay where you are now. If you push cwr to flash custom roms you will not be able to get ota. I just recommend read up on everything then decide what you feel comfortable with.

No, not really. I'm just trying to be careful. I followed this post---http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/fascinate/4786-how-flash-clockwork-recovery-fascinate.html

All went well, so now I'm just looking for that next step.

yeah the ota may download and attempt to install but may not install properly and you could brick....every phone is different so we just dont know.

yeah now that you have cwr...you may want to start small with jts rom as its more basic than blackhole (which is great, but since it rips your system down to nothing and you have to "build" it, its a bit daunting if you are new to the phone) jts rom is in rom manager for dio1 (super clean 0.4) or here [ROM] Super Clean De-Binged DI01 + AOSP apps - Updated 10/30 Version 0.4 - xda-developers in cwr

Ive decided when Nit and Saps arent around Nos and I are the tagteam. :D;)
I've decided when nitsuj17 and I are around you guys are still the tagteam and even standalone good to go on your own. And not just you two there are a growing number of very well informed and helpful peeps in these parts.

Staying on topic Im getting quite tempted to try the Blackhole rom. Lots of peeps seem to really be please with it, especially the new 2.3

The one on DJ05 before the 2.3 release was really laggy and had to re-draw the screen every time I changed orientation. I was running it on StupidFast 1.54 kernel. Maybe the Voodoo kernel will resolve that if it were using it instead?

Don't all launchers have to redraw when you switch to landscape? I don't know if the ROM is to blame for the lag you're experiencing. Or do you mean in apps, not the homescreens?

I'm on Blackhole 2.2.1 and my apps switch orientation fine. I haven't had LauncherPro set to switch automatically in a while because I find it makes it lag, but that was the case for me long before DJ05 or Blackhole.

Yeah, I meant in homescreen as well as within applications. I know the homescreens do that, which is fine, but I've never had this problem of redrawing in-app every time I rotate. And when I say never, mean never on my Eris with custom ROMs nor on my Droid with custom ROMs. I just found it to be a major nuisance. I'm just bouncing around the few DJ05 ROMs right now, seeing which one feels best. I just switched to SuperDark and even with the Auto-rotate it runs smoothly and doesn't re-draw within the apps. Maybe my phone just didn't like the combination, just sharing my experience ;)
