Root Bloatware Question

Misato

Newbie
So I got my new DNA today (massive upgrade over my old phone, a Droid Incredible) and I'd love to get the Verizon bloatware off of there. Now, I know this means rooting the thing and voiding the warranty and all that fun. I've read the guides and obviously there's a lot more root can do than just what I want, but what I'd really like to know is to meet my meager goals, just what do I have to do? Like I said, I don't need or plan to use all the power root can get me, I just want to prune bloat. So do I need to go through absolutely all the parts of the root guides, or can I just go to a certain point and then bust out my favorite app uninstaller and go to town or what? And is there any downside to just deleting all the garbage? Thanks.

Firstly, if you don't have titanium back up, get it.

Before you uninstall anything, back it up first this way if anything starts to act wonky, you can restore it so things will go back.

I prefer to freeze though rather than un installing (disable from system, invisible from dock.

You have to root the phone before Titanium Backup will work. Which means you have to unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery. Then as DragonSlayer has said it's best to freeze the bloatware you want to remove that way if the phone starts acting up if you froze something bad you can unfreeze it so everything works again.

on the other hand... :p

i prefer to delete bloatware,as freezing it does not free up any system memory. the guys have good points about being able to unfreeze if something goes wrong,so heres what i do:
1)make a nandroid backup of 100% stock unrooted, prior tp flashing root files.
2)make a backup of stock rooted.
3)freeze a small number of apps. run the phone a few days.
4)if no issues, delete the frozen apps
5)make a backup
6)repeat steps 3-5 until all your bloatware is gone.

as long as you freeze first,go slow, and make backups along the way,you can delete safely :)

rooting is fairly srtraigtforward now,all you need to do is run an app to change the CID of the phone, and then unlock the bootloader via htcdev. refer to this thread: http://androidforums.com/droid-dna-all-things-root/652672-guide-unlock-droid-dna.html

another option is to not unlock at all,but send the phone in to have the secure flag turned off. if you do this, the telltale heart relocked water mark can be avoided completely,or changed. refer to this thread: http://androidforums.com/droid-dna-all-things-root/685665-s-off-via-jtag.html
