Help Bluetooth Keyboard for Droid - Faster Typing

Wait! There is a new external iphone keyboard! Here!

Looks like it is huge and you still have to have the software keyboard active and it only works on some applications.

At least with Android you know USB hid and full bluetooth are possible. I read USB HID is mostly working in 2.1.

I'd love to see a true hid bluetooth stack for android get enabled. Then we'd get keyboard, mouse, usb barcode reader support. That'd be awesome.

@SpecialEd
"They don't support those keyboards at all", I haven't told "they don't support keyboards" !
I was answering to Sportster, who told that bluetooth on Android was crappy, to conclude that iPhone is awesome. His troll isn't smart, as at least, Android has a bluetooh that permits some uncommon stuff (even if it's not easy to configure), unlike iPhone.
I'm not trolling about iPhone, both Android and Iphone permits to do almost everything you want, you gave the proof. ;)

You missed the point and I'm not 'trolling' as I have a Droid but I do have a iPod. The point is people want something to be simple. Not everyone has a tech degree. It adds confusion when you want to add say a BT mouse, which I was considering, but now have to wonder if it's even possible due to confusing compatibility differences. This isn't only a BT issue as I recently discovered trying to purchase a charge cable only to find out that there must be thirty types of USB out there! Standard, sub a,micro, mini, etc etc. It's ridiculous!!!

A, B, mini-a, mini-b, micro-a, micro-b. Then there are a dozen proprietary types.

@Sportster
Aw sorry then, as I said, I'm french, so I don't always understand perfectly... So I was mistaking about what you said, excuse me...

The Android system is still young, but it grows fast. So, for now, accessories are hard to use with it, because they aren't made for him, they are just adapted from others devices. I think that manufacturers will soon understand that they can make money with Android, and start selling us accessories really made for Android, and easy to use, and configure (plug and play style^^).
The ones who can't wait will have to get our hand dirty...
And for those who don't know, speaking about the freedom keyboards, official free drivers are announced for this very month ;)

hey mmgtony i finally got a freedom pro keyboard it took a while as they were out of stock when i ordered i have an address of 00:18:00:0C:0C:22

hopefully it is worth the wait

After a hard time reading the 3 pages, I saw the author only provided keys up to 31 december, we are too late. So we can pay to have it. The product will not be that usefull to me, as it can't be used for games, so I'll wait for the gamepad drivers, seen in another post ;)
Keep up the good work mmgtony, thanks !

Hi all,

I released my Android / Droid driver for bluetooth keyboards this week.

Sorry for posting i know some admin not like free advertisement but i did not know how to let people know where to find my drivers.

Here if anyone interested: http://www.mymobilegear.com/AndroidKBDriver.php

Please give me instructions on how to connect my Droid to Freedom Universal 2. . . I bought KeyPro, have the registration Key, plug everything in but it will not connect. (will not discover the keyboard in the Droid's wireless setting either.) Please help, I really need this to work. I previously bought the Stowaway ultraslim but did not realize it was not compatible. I have $175 invested in two folding keyboards and neither works. HELP!!!!

I have tried to follow the instructions in this thread, but to no avail. Firstly, when I try to pair my HTC Hero with my Freedom Universal II keyboard, the phone tells me that there is a problem pairing with the keyboard if I try to do it in HID mode (as suggested here). It will however pair in SDD mode. Then when I go to KeyPro and enter the keyboard model and press [scan], I am taken to a screen that is blank apart from the heading, "KeyPro". I press the phone's [menu] button and then the virtual [discovery] button. A box comes up on the screen saying, "Discovery error. Failed to discovery devices: 9". This happens whether the keyboard is in HID or SDD mode. I have tried switching between the two as well as switching off the keyboard and switching it back on. Nothing seems to make a difference. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Is there some way to use a PC keyboard and screen to control a Droid? I know I can use vnc to go the other way (and that's way cool), but it would be nice, while sitting at my desk to be able to type into the droid and see it's screen on my monitor.

I could do this using "my mobiler" My Mobiler (Windows Mobile) - Download on my windows mobile phone, but I can't find anything to work with the droid.

Roylive,

I have pulled the instructions from the developer's website to make this a complete posting. Where I made slight modifications to work with my Droid and Freedom Pro I have posted in brackets {} and used italics. I used the following steps to enable the keyboard:

Installation:
Download KeyPro from the Android Marketplace

Configuration:

Open Android

Got it all, not sure what I'm doing wrong. Instructions seem a little confusing to me, but maybe that's just me.

Do I need to give you this to get a key to get this thing to work? Paid by Paypal. May have even paid twice.

What next?

I just got the Freedom Pro keyboard. I've done the steps up to the key entry. Please provide the registration key for the address 00:18:00:0C:0B:40.

I am fine with paying for KeyPro, but only saw a free version in the market. Sorry if I missed something posted above.

Just paid for this by Paypal, so please send me an email about the code, I also did the register keys thing from your webpage, so you have my email there and with the Paypal payment

I tested this one and the Teksoft driver above. This one works 10x better. The one above types very slowly, so slow to make it unusable. I am using the Freedom Universal Pro. Also, you need to lose the step about trying to pair it with the keyboard through the phones bluetooth settings. That only confuses people (see above) all you need to do it download it, check the box under the keyboard settings page, and then go into your program, scan (in HID), and then go back and save again (this time with SPP mode on keyboard). It will try scanning again and connect. The rest was confusing.

Thanks!

Please forgive if this is rude but to cut to the chase: I would like an external keyboard for my moto droid. I normally type 70 - 80 wpm. What would be a good choice for external keyboard? Tech noob here so plain English would be helpfull.

Thanks in advance and again, I apologize if this comes across as rude.

Heh, no need to think it's rude to ask a direct question. Rude is when you belittle someone or don't show them respect.

I replied to say that. I don't actually know the answer to your question. I'm following this thread, waiting for the day when my Logitech Dinovo Edge keyboard will work with the Droid. It sounds like it would with the Teksoft driver but it also sounds like that driver isn't there yet.
