Root [Boost Mobile] How the Warp was won

So this might or might not should go in the root section... you can always move it, but at least read it first!

So Wednesday(what day? lol! /end inside joke) my mom's health aid was here and had nothing to do and was fooling with her phone. It's a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. She is bitching about how it's slow and locking up and all that and I asked her a stupid question. If it was rooted(lol whuts that?)... anyway so I asked her if I could run a benchmark on it, after I explained what that was she said "just don't look at my pictures." Which of course made me want to look at them. But I didn't! So I ran the benchmark... 7600 in antutu. I lolled. I showed her my Warp and my best score of 7800(and told her it can go as high as 8200).

Pwned.

Playing with both phones side by side(hers running JB, mine running alliance), I can honestly say

I'd much rather have my WARP than her phone.
Her phone is nowhere near stable. It's slow and glitchy. So she asked me what could be done. I told her bring it back Friday(i.e. today) and I'll root it and install something like CM on it. We'll crank the processor up to 1.8ghz and find whatever app is misbehaving and this thing will fly.

She said to me "You sound like you're speaking Japanese right now(which caused me to almost say something in Japanese... just to be cool!), you are so smart!"

I said "well... yeah, but the props go to these guys." I turned my mom's laptop around and showed her the android forums.

So today I will root my third phone(Well, two prevails, two warps, now an S2... third BRAND of phone). I'm anxious to see what's been cooked up for the S2, which is probably a much more popular phone than the warp.

Still:

Pimped out warp > stock GS2 skyrocket

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh.

I'll keep you posted!

So our rooted Gingerbread Warp is faster than a Jelly Bean Skyrocket? Thats way cool :D
That phone is pretty fast after rooting from what I've heard, I think it benchmarks in the 20000 region?

OMG

I bricked her phone >_<

IDK wtf is up with it. CM9 won't run, cm10 won't run, both bootloop at their respective logos.

I can restore it to stock but that's GB and her phone was on ICS.

And no, we didn't do a nandroid. Her internal and external were full and her pictures were more important. And she trusted me.

The S2 has Tons of stuff!! Massive selection of Roms, Themes, Etc
Doc is over there in that forum now. I post in it as well.

Damn. Did you make sure it was the correct firmware? Thats really important when it comes to rooting on Samsung phones. I wouldn't dare root my friends Skyrocket without a few days of reading in the very least.

Yeah I checked and triple checked. I used ODIN to restore to stock and it immediately started updating itself to ICS on my wifi but she has to leave 15 minutes ago and it's sitting at a screen that reads "Software update" with a little progress bar that isn't moving.

Rooting was np btw, but her stock setup was so bloated and I wanted to OC... that's when the trouble began. She's gonna bring it back monday... but I gotta at least get it to where she can call and text.

both the internal AND external (16GB internal, 2gb external) were full of pictures and video.

I did back up her apps, contacts, sms, etc with Titanium to my own card.

But the damn phone is still stuck at "Software Update: Loading" after downloading an update and rebooting itself.

Meanwhile I found the OFFICIAL JB firmware for the phone... but its near 500MB and I'm out of time, 30 min left on download.

I can fix it.

But not today.

Everytime... everytime I or someone brags about me I #$@# it all up!

Like the gravy?

Damn, I download files that size in like 3 minutes, whose your internet provider?

It's not the ISP, it's the host.

My down is 6 megabit, that's running at about 1/6th that.

She gave up and left the phone with me for tonight.

I SHALL MAKE IT LIKE NEW.

Or I'm not gonna be here when she get's back...

This is good, I think.

Meanwhile, I kinda get the feeling my days here are numbered... edited and deleted posts and all that.

My roommate has the S2, I'll see what input he has. He likes to play around with hardware, and has "bricked" his a few times but always resuscitates it.

Thanks, that flash brought it to JB, fully functional and happy. I rooted it and am restoring her apps and such now.

sammies are a pita, I have a few Samsungs. the S2, the Samsung Prevail, Samsung Illusion, And the Samsung Galaxy S 4G all running custom roms. Most made by me for clients. If you need any help let me know, I am a developer in rl, lol im lead developer of the company i work for.

The thing about Samsung's is that the kernel and recovery are one in the same. Most have the recovery built into the kernel. So, the best thing to do is flash the recovery kernel first then proceed with flashing. Make sure that the model number listed in the zip's build.prop matches the model number listed in settings>about phone>model Number. I'm sure you knew all of this but, just hitting all the bases. If you can get me a list of the bloatware apps i can write a script to remove them automatically using adb :)

Edit: Wow just realized how old this thread is. Sorry i Necro'd such an old thread........

Haha she was our housekeeper and mom's nurse and she doesn't even work here anymore. She ended up happy, all I really ended up doing was manually updating her phone to JB from ICS. I still don't know what was up, the model numbers matched and everything. I tried many different builds of CM9 and 10 and they all boot looped. Let's see if I can explain this, I tried to before. I got root and custom recovery no problem. On the older CWM(like the one we have on warp) it would flash the roms fine. But it bootlooped. The newer CWM would refuse to flash it. It also wouldn't wipe the cache, dalvik, system etc. It kept complaining it failed to mount the partition or the partition didn't exist.

But yeah when she handed me the phone it was ICS. Once I borked it, I found a complete stock rom, like the very first rom for the phone. It was GB. It flashed and booted. But I didn't wanna leave her with a downgrade and I found out the GS2 Skyrocket just had a JB update pushed. I got it manually and flashed it with odin. Restored her apps/contacts and all that with titanium.

Fortunately in the process whatever was bogging down her phone and making it reboot got done away with. She came back the next week and said it had been running like new.

Still a secret part of me is sad that I didn't get to overclock it. LOL

...

Maybe it's like TWRP where you have to mount a partition first before you can work with it? You'd think it would do this automatically, though.
