Root [Boost Mobile] [OUTDATED][GUIDE][MD7][MG2] Rooting & Recovery for Galaxy S3(Boost)

Just curious... those of you that have rooted using this method, what building number are you on?
I've rooted many phones and have not had any problems like I'm having with this phone... I'm just curious if there are different build numbers out there..

My phone info is: model number SPH-L710, build number jz054k.l710vpamd7

Same as you so Idk I believe you probably didn't do a step correctly and the mounting problem you probably just need to fix permission I'm sorry I couldn't help sooner and btw if you have a problem you should started a new thread we don't really read this only people who are looking to root

i just did this on a 3rd phone, fresh out of the box... again cwm and twrp will not work!
they flash fine with odin but will not mount anything! i followed step by step... i am not a first time rooter, i have many phones under my belt all with root and cwm. there is somthing a miss with this recovery... whether the partition is protected or somthing idk, but 3 phones all no go????

is the an irc channel i can get help with?

please help solve...

Did you try unchecking autoreboot when flashing CWM or TWRP. Then when the flash is successful, pull the battery and boot directly in recovery?

yep, sure did. any other ideas? I do appreciate the help :)

I am running Windows 8, I don't think that is what the problem is because Odin says everything is flashing perfectly...
when I flash the sprint stock recovery everything works like it should again. I am truly at a loss of thoughts.

with any custom recovery installed, when booted into recovery adb can not recognize my phone, nor my computer... but when i have the stock (sprint) recovery my phone is recognized... the mount points are the same, however i can not mount with the stock recovery ether. its as if the phone blocks the custom recovery???

Help!! I am rooted and am trying to get my phone into recovery. I power my phone off, then press the power, vol. up and home buttons at the same time, but it will not boot into recovery. It just reboots back up. Please help. I have done this numerous making sure to press these buttons at the same time and I even went so far as to keep pressing them for about a minute and I get the same thing, just reboots back up.

let go of all the buttons when you first see lights from your phonescreen most likely will have blue writing in the top left corner

Ok, I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 for BOOSTMOBILE, I have been trying to find the Stock ROM or Rooted one... All I find is the Sprint Version, I know that they are almost the same but does anyone have the actual BOOSTMOBILE ROM????????????? Thanks

yeah... i have root!!!
NOT by the op method above....

i ended up getting root from the donate version of "SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 UNIFIED TOOLKIT V7.5.1 found here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746680

i donated to get support for "sprint android version 4.1.2 bmd4" which is in toolkit version 7.5.1...

after getting bootloop on the last phone (with no odin recovery yet) i didnt have the balls to try any other opptions other than (#1 flash unsicure boot image and root) i was scared out of my mind until the phone rebooted :D
but it worked...

good luck to anyone else that tries

I HAVE ROOT!

==== EDIT ====
I noticed for some reason the mobile network (LTE / CDMA) does not work after this rooting method... however mobile network (CDMA) does work... so no 4G f for me at the moment. But I still get 3g... I can't do a prl update nor a profile update. .. cwm still has bad mounts and won't work... every thing else seems ok.

Thank you very much for this info. My Boost Galaxy S3 has the same issues while trying to use recovery. Your method worked perfectly except for the bugs mentioned. Just curious, have you found a way to Update PRL? Or do you know how to revert? I am now getting terrible reception in my house... Thanks for the info!

Yes I did fix it... the issue is from sprint's boot.img... you need to replace it with boost's boot.img...

i put this boost stock boot.img in on my sd card and copied it to the partition using the adb command

dd if=/mnt/extSdCard/boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p7

here is the stock boost mobile boot.img
http://db.tt/MioOrz0w

If you can't use adb you should be able to use odin... I THINK you can just put the boot.img in the same folder the sprint unsicure boot.img is in and do the same steps as the toolbox but select this boot.img ***I THINK***

Thanks! That worked perfectly. Just ran:

dd if=/mnt/extSdCard/boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p7

From inside terminal emulator after putting the file in "/mnt/extSdCard/" and everything went perfect. Only thing is, i think i should find one from US because that one says EUR... LOL. Doesn't seem to matter though. Now if only we could get custom recovery working... Thanks again!

Do you also have the files for the Stock Recovery for the S3? I ll try to get the Samsung OTA update and i cant seem to go back to stock recovery i watched a youtube video that he had the recovery file that he flashed with odin as well?

Hi all. I'm a little confused about the exact steps needed to achieve recovery and root since I'm running the newest updates. From the looks of the TUT, this is based on the older version.

I have seen the recovery fix. Is there an Odin flashable version of a working recovery yet so the fix doesn't need to be used? I just thought I would ask before proceeding.
Thanks. :D

EDIT: Found this. LOL!! http://androidforums.com/boost-mobi...ot/753772-odin-backup-sph-l710_md7-stock.html

I do believe this might solve the recovery problem. Gonna read up on it more before going forward.

Edit: nope, it's not working yet but he's working on it.

I guess I'll wait on an answer from someone who has already done it with one of the updated phones. ;)

http://androidforums.com/boost-mobile-galaxy-s3-all-things-root/758966-recovery-fix.html should help your recovery issue, it least it helped my problems...
As for root, maybe after flashing the recovery fix you could flash the zip from the op... For me I had to use the Samsung Galaxy S3 toolkit and use Sprint.... Or you can use the http://androidforums.com/boost-mobile-galaxy-s3-all-things-root/753772-odin-backup-sph-l710_md7-stock.html and flash the one that's rooted then just instill SuperSU

I'm good bro. Thanks Smith058, I got it figured out.

Austrie, I hope you don't mind me borrowing a few of your steps and modifying them so that this will work for the newer phones and let them flash TWRP with Odin. This way they don't even have to worry about bothering with the RECOVERY FIX.

For those of you who have the new Boost phones and want a for sure way to flash TWRP with Odin, then root, please replace these steps in the list above posted by Austrie.

1. Download TWRP Recovery, Samsung Drivers, Odin 3.04, and Root From Recovery Zip

TWRP image can be found here. Scroll down and look for the ODIN PACKAGES!! Select the TWRP download. ( It is tested and working... I'm running it now :D )

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391616

6. Place Odin Folder and TWRP File In A Folder On Your Desktop

10. Navigate To The TWRP recovery file ( recovery.tar.md5 ) And Double Click It.

21. It Should Take 10 Seconds, Once Odin Says 'PASS’ ( up in the top left hand corner of the window ), You May Unplug Your Device. Don't look for it to say PASS in the scrolling window because that's not where it says it. LOL :p

Thanks go out to all who are contributing to the development of this phone. You guys are appreciated.

TeamWin for TWRP

Kennyglass123 also has a Modified CWM Recovery image but I have not tested it. I have the Modified TWRP Recovery on my phone and it is working perfectly. ;)
