Root [Boost Mobile] Question Reguarding Recent Kitkat Upgrade!

I have Galaxy S3 that I want to root. I just installed the new kitkat update I got the other day for my SPH-710 using android version 4.4.2. I can supply baseband or kernel info if needed or any other info needed. This phone has never been rooted and looking for the simplest to do the root it to run rooted apps. I also spent a lot time customizing my phone using Nova Launcher Prime and I really just want the simplest root method so I can keep all my tweaking intact and not have rebuild phone from scratch. I hoping you can help with my newest rooting endeavor :)

UPDATE: I was able to get root to stick. This is how I had to do it:
-Flash CWM(I used Philz latest), via Odin, uncheck auto-reboot and F.Reset Time
-When done, pull battery, then boot to recovery
-Wipe cache, dalvik(good habit), then Philz settings/re-root System (SuperSU). It will instruct you to go into playstore and download SuperSU
-Reboot, download SuperSU in playstore. Open SuperSU, it will give you a Knox warning, asking you if you want to disable Knox(I said yes), and profit!

Try this, i got it to root this way. Hope it helps

I am got the following files together and seeing I am following the right way to install things. I only done 1 root before on my G2 about a year ago so it not a simple matter to do these roots. I can follow directions but most of the acromyns and buzzwords like ODEXED and DEODEXED mean nothing to me unless I research it and hopefully find the right info on them.

Heres a link to explain Odexed vs Deodexed
Odexed vs Deodexed?

I have gotten this Philz Goo.im Downloads - Downloading philz_touch_6.41.6-d2lte.zip to install

Heres some pictures of the philz touch 6 which helps me see what its all about.....
https://www.google.com/search?q=Philz+Touch&newwindow=1&safe=off&client=firefox-a&hs=tQU&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=sb&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=nDSWU5_YOInLsQTm2oKIBw&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAw&biw=1630&bih=866#channel=sb&newwindow=1&q=philz+touch+6&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&safe=off&tbm=isch&imgdii=_

I downloaded this Odin file Download Odin 3.09
and will uncheck auto-reboot and F.Reset Time when using it.

I see AP button in odin to load the tar file from the following post I got.

"AP" is the "PDA" equivalent in ver. 3.09..

-When done, pull battery, then boot to recovery
-Wipe cache, dalvik(good habit), then Philz settings/re-root System (SuperSU).

Entering recovery mode on Galaxy S3 is very easy. All you have to do is shut down your device and boot while holding the volume up, home button and power button simultaneously.

Questions here do I need to wipe cache, and dalvik or can I pass this part and will this or any of what I am doing reset my phone so I need to reset all my settings and need to reinstall programs and re setup Nova Launcher Prime?

then Philz settings/re-root System (SuperSU)
Not sure how this part works is there a Philz setting part to be cleaned and how do I re-root system?

-Reboot, download SuperSU in playstore. Open SuperSU, it will give you a Knox warning, asking you if you want to disable Knox(I said yes), and profit!

So with Knox warning disabled I read that they will know that phone has been tampered with and nothing can do about that at this time!

So let me know if the Philz file is the one I should and if this will root my phone and leave data intact and gonna try this puppy

Ok some final notes on getting this to to work for me with the above files. I could figure out why I could not get odin to see my phone. I tried drivers and drivers were fine then I find that developer options were turn off I think by default on kitkat 4.42 so heres a link to show how to turn them on......
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcFVRDZ5Z9Q

I also was not following how there were 2 boot up modes...

 1. Now, I put the Sprint Galaxy S3 SPH-L710 in Download Mode by pressing and holding down the Home, Volume Down and the Power button together. A warning screen will come up; press Volume Up button to enter Download Mode.
I will add more later did get everything working quickly tested couple tethering apps seem to be running anyway so that a good start......:D

Wow...That's one long post. Ok, let me try to wade through it. 1st, first step, flash philz. I would delete 3.09 and download 3.07(why, because it has the PDA slot, and you can follow directions EXACTLY). 2nd, you need the tar version of philz, not the .zip. When you reboot into recovery, you should wipe cache and dalvik, it will not mess up your phone settings. Yes, reroot is an option under "philz settings" in recovery. Apply supersu(click yes to this option after you click yes to reroot). And reboot. You know the rest....good luck!

Ok followed these instructions except used Odin 3.09 and as I saw and had read differences between version us the AP button to load the tar with 3.09. So next thing I tried is getting a tethering app to work using WIFI as it why I rooted in the first place but be nice to be able to use any apps that need root also. Apps currently on my phone that I tried are "Open Garden WiFi Tether, PdaNet+, WiFi Tether+, Hotspot Control, FoxFi, Wireless Tether, Portable WiFi hotspot, and Tether Unlocker.
Not sure some setting I am missing or apps are not compatible with my Galaxy S3 phone running kitkat. I also seen that some apps only work with certain carriers and guessing they work Sprint network at least being a Boost phone. So heres the latest challenge to get my phone tethered.

I just now went to research the difference between Tethering and Hotspot and heres what I found out...

When tethering, you are the only one that is able to use the internet from your phone, much like attaching an external wireless network interface card (NIC) to your computer. This means that your cellular device and your computer are physically connected to each other (some cable).

"A hotspot would refer to making your cellular device act like a Bridge (or in simple terms a router). It acts as the "middle man" between a number of devices connected to its hotspot and relays the packets to the wireless network your cellular device is connected to (GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSPA, LTE). This means that many clients (computers) can connect to the hotspot your cellular device begins broadcasting, it will most likely be 802.11b or 802.11g, both of which have an "outdoor range" (no physical objects obstructing the path) of 140metres. Setting up the hotspot is the same as setting up a router; you give provide an SSID, encryption type (WEP, WPA, etc) and a passkey or passphrase."

So after reading this I mainly want to Hotspot my phone to use it as wireless router so I can use it with other tablets and PCs that have WiFi. I see that some apps do both and might use tethering too at times.

Since you have just updated to Kit Kat, I suggest giving the Sprint Wicked-X ROM a try. It's what I'm running and I absolutely love it. It also has a very active thread where the Dev and members are constantly making mods.

Wicked-X ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52637420

Once you have flashed the ROM, you'll need to flash the APN fix so your MMS will work.

Boost APN fix
http://androidforums.com/showthread.php?p=6517837

As for the Wicked-X ROM, it's one of the nicest TouchWiz ROMS I've ever ran. It comes with the KT747 kernel which can be overclocked if you choose. The kernel comes with its own app for kernel adjustment which is located in the ROM apps. It's called the KTweaker app. You have to check a box to enable overclocking if you choose to go that route. Personally, i don't even overclock because the ROM is so freaking smooth that you don't need to.

If you do decide to try the rom, make sure you read the 1st 3 or 4 posts in the ROM thread. It gives you flashing instructions and all the mods and themes you'll need. The wifi Hotspot also works on this ROM. There is a zip fix located in the posts I mentioned.

I hope you choose to give this ROM a try. You will not be disappointed. :)

Hi wetbiker7,
I appreciate the help on setting up the Wicked-X ROM and using the Boost APN fixbut right now that more that I want or need at this time as I like to learn everything I can using a stock setup so if I get any tech jobs that require me setup android phones I just want to be working with stock phone thats been rooted and some apps like hotspot and Titanium Backups can be used. If hotspot not on the table atm then I will wait until someone get there app working. I waited like 6 month for kitkat to appear and that what I wanted to learn the newest android OS thats out right now.
So if anyone know of a way to wifi hotspot my phone let me know:D

No problem. Since you were new on the scene with Kit Kat I just wanted to give you a heads up on a great ROM. You choosing to stay with stock is understandable. Many people choose to do the same.

As far as a wifi Hotspot for a rooted phone, I bought the WiFi Tether Router app and I haven't found a rooted ROM yet that it wouldn't work on. I'll check around and see if there's a free mod available yet.

Edit:

All I've found is a mod for ND8. Nothing for NDC. There ls a chance it'll work with Boost but no guarantees.

Wi-Fi tether for Boost/VM is tougher since it's not offered by the carrier. I used Wi-Fi tether app(paid app) from play store for mk5. Might work....

I was finally able to get the WiFi Tether Router connected but kept running into DHCP problem with the connection and Windows could not fix the error. The signal strength was good but I could not connect to anything using my browsers.

I use the Galaxy S3 settings from the website which are as followed

For Samsung Galaxy S3 using this config
Interface wlan0
Method 3 - HostApd
Channel 1
Encryption wpa2-psk
Drivers nl80211
"HostApd Patch" <- UNCHECKED
"No Firmware Reload" <- UNCHECKED

I could not at first get DHCP setting to stick but when I finally got them they were like this.

Not sure what need to be tweaked but this is closest I had to actually making this work. Hope someone has tried something I missed that works. ;)

There's a trick to it. It's very finicky. And you have to make sure your Wi-Fi is turned ON after you enable. Weird, I know. But that's what it takes

It did not change the problem on not connecting to internet. Here are 2 screenshots showing connection...................

You may also want to go into your wifi settings and disable these..... Network Notification, Always allow scanning, and Smart network switch. If you have Connections optimizer on then you may also want to disable it.

Wifi hotspot apps can be tricky. Settings that you think wouldn't have anything to do with them can cause issues.

In the app instructions on Play it has this ....

*** If you have problems with Android 4.3 / 4.4, be sure you have DISABLED (unchecked) the "Scan always available" option following path: Settings -> WiFi -> Advanced -> Scan always available ***

If you have purchased the app WiFi Tether Router, they have full email support. Use it if needed. The app has a 4.5 out of a 5 star rating on Play. That says a lot about the app. ;)

Ya I had some those items on your list before and just tweaked the rest of the settings and still not able to connect to internet. I using 5.9 version of the WiFi Tether Router app trying it out to see if it worked until I can get the program through play. I am not sure if the newest 6.1 version will make a difference. Not seen any big version note news. I tried to use my Vizio TV network connection to see if I could hook up router and my HTC EVO4g phone but same problem could find device but could not use the Router. I feel like its some problem with DHCP not directing to DNS Servers but all settings I tried did not work. Can anyone tell me how you have those settings setup?

The dev, fabio, is a great guy, and offers excellent support for the paid wifi tether router app. Just shoot him an email, maybe he can help you through it.

Bro. I'm kinda lost. He says he's using an older version of an app. If he's using the paid version of WiFi Tether Router then it would've updated automatically.

Ya
I was testing older version of program because I been out of work 4 months and might lose my home and everything else. If I had the required $2.50 to pay to see if program worked which it does at least not for me I would have. So stop with all the judgements. If the program did work I will sell my left kidney and buy the app to have it all legal like cause I know none of people are or ever had used pirated stuff especially to see if you can use it before you buy it . I mentioned the version number on purpose not to get myself caught but to see if if anyone had a newer version was working.

Also got grabbed the Google Opinion Rewards so hopefully that will help!

Sorry to hear about your personal issues. I hope everything works out OK for you.

When asking for help in the open forum, people take it for granted you are using an up to date version of the app. It does make a big difference. Especially when there's been an update like 4.4.2 which was a doozy.

I don't know what to tell you with the version you are using.

You have another option which will work. You can flash one of the ROMS that have a built in hotspot.

Alright thanks for the suggestion I may go for that ROM if nothing else works and pardon my ignorance but what does the ROM change that allows the hotspot to work and if I use the ROM will it be like putting root on phone where I dont lose my current data and setup and settings?

Well, Sprint ROMS come with a Hotspot. Devs can activate it so that you're able to use it. Most all of the custom ROMS have a built-in hotspot too.

Also, there's no need to root the phone if the custom ROM is already rooted. All you need to do is flash it.

As for your setup and data. You'll lose your setup. You can use an app like Titanium Backup to save your apps and their data. You need to make sure that you have the Titanium Backup folder on your SD card too. That way you won't lose the backed up apps and their data when you do a wipe. Titanium has a guide on their site explaining how the app works and what all you can do with it.

Anytime you flash a different ROM you need to do a factory reset. Philz recovery has the option in the factory reset to wipe it for a new ROM install. That wipes everything. I'm old fashioned and still do a cache wipe and Davlik cache wipe too. Never hurts to take the extra steps. ROM threads usually have instructions on the steps needed to flash it.

This section is a great place to learn about how to do all this stuff.

This is what I looking at as replacement ROM looks pretty nice and has hotspot already there. I am currently making a Titanium Backup to a dropbox now and will do the nandroid backups as per install instructions. I made a back up of nova settings on dropbox too so now I wondering what I need to do to cover my contacts and and settings or are they covered when I log on to google play which is what I an assuming. Any other prep work will I need to do? Will I need to play around changing sprint numbers to boost? Can I use my NDC device will I need to change that? Just firing off some questions as I still need to read more on the ROM just saw it tonight but I know you guys have all the answers TIA! I copy ROM zip to SD card and install using Philz recover?
