Root Boot Loop + Bootloader/TWRP Loop = Headache

Hey guys,

I have searched and haven't quite found the answer to my problem.....

I had MeanRom installed on my EVO and wanted to get the stable version of CM10. I tried flashing it but got into the CM10 boot loop. I went back and restored MeanRom and read how you had to flash the CM10 boot.img first. So I extracted the boot.img and used flash image gui to flash it. Then restarted the phone and got into a boot loop for meanrom. I can into the hboot loader and clicked on recovery and it just keeps opening up the hboot. I cant even select power down, it just reopens into hboot. I cannot get into TWRP to flash something else or even recover back to my good MeanRom recovery file.

Any thoughts? I am at a stand still really.

BTW, I have never used any command prompts or anything with the computer....i used a 1 click root method to get where I am now.....thanks!!!

do you have an evo lte by chance?

So you currently have the AOSP kernel and the Sense ROM, but can't get to recovery.

I would try to reinstall recovery from fastboot to make sure something didnt get messed up there.

Just place the recovery img in the fastboot folder and its basically the same way you did the kernel except the code you use is:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Can download TWRP from TeamWin Projects - TWRP 2.3 - HTC Evo 4G LTE | TeamWin

Alternatively, you could pull the boot.img out of the meanrom.zip and flash the sense kernel

Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img

Thanks for the reply, but how to I enter anything? From my computer? I have never done that, do I need to install some program onto my PC and then enter in that prompt?

How did you orogoinally flash the kernel?

Everything I suggested gets done from the PC, and I assumed that's how you had already done it the first time.

The more you can tell us, the better we can help you :)

If I read you right, you have the kernel from CM10 with MeanRom instead of MeanRom kernel with MeanRom?

Here's the part you need to make Rxpert's command work for you -

Plug your phone into your computer - hopefully, you enabled USB debugging before this, otherwise, nothing in this post will work.

Unzip this Mini-SDK onto your PC, put it into your C:\ as C:\sdk-tools.

http://androidforums.com/faqs/443072-adb-guide-updated-2013-05-21-a.html#post5389081

Get a DOS window and then enter these two commands -

cd c:\sdk-tools

adb reboot recovery

If you get to TWRP, great.

If not, enter this -

adb reboot bootloader

And then go to fastboot, follow the on-screen instructions.

And then re-flash TWRP or the MeanRom boot.img by putting it into the c:\sdk-tools area and then using RXpert's command(s).

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies guys....here are some answers

I do have an SD card, but I cannot get into recovery to flash anything from it....I am comfortable with that, but like i said, it isnt working

I used "flash image gui" to flash the boot.img, not the computer. I have never used command lines, just the 1 click root

I tried installing that link but I dont think I have USB debugging on or something because the computer isnt recognizing that I have the phone plugged in...

If you didn't have USB debugging turned on first then no commands from the pc will work, sorry. :(

All you can do is to _patiently_ try to get to the bootloader (and from there, fastboot or recovery) by hand.

Plug your phone into a charger.

Hold down the power button for 10 full seconds. The lights on the bottom buttons will blink and then your phone will go into a hardware reset and true reboot.

After that, the charging led (probably orange at the top to the right of the speaker) will blink off. At that point, unhand the power button and hold down the down-volume button. Keep holding, until a white screen with writing appears - unless it goes into the bootloop, in which case repeat the procedure.

Don't get frustrated and man-handle your little buttons, they're tied to microswitches. Whistle a happy tune while you try it.

If your phone goes completely off, and won't come back up at all, you're in luck. Hold down the volume down button, tap power and keep holding power down and you can get to the bootloader.

Be patient, above all don't panic and try this this for a bit, then, get back to us.

Best luck!

OK, im in the bootloader and it still just loops! If I select recovery, it just reboots to the bootloader and over and over....no menus to flash anything and no twrp....any other ideas??? 3 days without a phone...its driving me nuts!

do you have an sd card reader? you can move the recovery.img over to the sd card that way and then fastboot command the recovery.

Ok, I'll let ocnbrze walk you through this.

An sd card reader is a little do-dad that you plug into your pc's usb on one side and then plug in your sd card on the other. I think that Radio Shack sells them.
http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/jewel/PJ75IMG-twrp-2.3.1.0-jewel.zip

Download the file above and rename to PJ75IMG.zip and place it on the root of the sdcard. Boot into bootloader and accept the update. If it doesn't start automatically updating and you see an option for FASTBOOT then choose that and wait a moment.

Boot back to the rom and rename/remove the file if you can, if not, you can try using TWRP to mount your sd card to your pc and remove it that way. Or power down the phone, take the sd card back to your pc and erase it from there.

PS - please have your phone off before plugging or removing your sd card.

Alright, I did all of the above and still nothing. When I turned the phone on, it booted straight to the bootloader. No update popped up so I found and selected fastboot and it went straight to the bootloader again....Ive read that there is a bug with TWRP where you can get stuck in a "bootloader loop"

Thanks for your help so far! I know we can do it!!! :) What a great community

Absolutely sure that your file didn't end up with the name ending in .zip.zip due to how you have Windows set up?

And that it was on the sd card not in a folder?

And that the first part of the name was all caps?

Also....I see when it goes into HBOOT that it says:

Its either not named right or in the wrong place.

It has to be on your external SD card not the internal card.

Sdcard0 is your internal and SD card 1 is external
