Boston Bombings (political talk)

Well on the topic of Russia notifying the US about him being someone to suspect. The FBI did take him in for questioning, and they apparently they didn't find anything to raise any additional flags. We can't just hold someone because someone says they are a terrorist whether they are a US citizen or not. Now if there were signs in the questioning that would have shown otherwise, then a deeper investigation would have been needed and once there is physical evidence, that is when you can hold him and place charges.

Quite.

Plus, in this case it was a rather suspect regime - with a bit of a history when it comes to pursuing critics who fled abroad - claiming he was a terrorist. That would naturally make you a little sceptical about the accusation: you don't want to be doing their dirty work for them, you need some kind of corroborating evidence.

Yeah, you kind of have to feel sorry for the FBI, because they really can't win. They only have limited resources, and where to allocate them has to be tough. As mentioned, they did investigate, they questioned him and his family, didn't find anything blatantly obvious, so what do they do? If they continue to dedicate their resources to this guy and somebody else blows something up, they get blamed for that. If they get it right nobody notices. It's only when things go wrong that they make the news.

Sad but true. In my opinion, most are likely decent types that are trying their best to find answers to very difficult question, amid the disaster. My hat is off to the good ones, to be sure.

I guess it really depends on what side of the tragedy you are on. If you are a victim, you perhaps want the government to find the answers regardless; if you are not involved, you complain about everything they did/did not do.

I have been the "victim" of two events that generated books as well as TV programs. I know what it is like from both ends and you often cannot win.
In one case, things were settled when after many years, the last perp was put to death at the Point of the Mountain.

I feel bad for Boston in general and the victims in particular.

We should not put blame on the FBI for not catching this, they did their job as they were supposed to. The only ones to blame for this is the two individuals that did it themselves.

I am glad they followed procedure and did not just make up their own rules because the word terrorist was thrown around. It still is a tragedy, but nothing now can undo what has been done, getting mad at the FBI won't change it. We have to be able to accept what happened and move forward, its hard to do, but it's something that needs to be done.

Ok so there have been multiple warnings to drop the gun control angle in this thread but it just doesn't seem to be working and frankly if the topic is that difficult to maintain, it's probably time to drop the discussion. Thread is now closed, please move all gun related discussion HERE.

In a nutshell, if you type the word "gun" for any other reason than to talk about maybe a caulking gun or perhaps a staple gun, please post in the above linked thread.

Cheers and thanks.
