Help Bought the TouchPad

Atma

Extreme Android User
Hello neighbors. I just bought the TouchPad on ebay and its supposed to be here this week. It is supposed to be running CM9 already but hasn't been used since January. It also still has a lot of the previous owner's crap on it. I'm planning to do a full wipe and flash CM9 again. What's the best latest build to flash?

If I want CM9 off completely and start over use ACMEUninstaller?

If I want WebOS back to stock use webosdoctorp305hstnhwifi ?

And to root WebOS use WebOSQuickInstall-4.2.3 ? Or is the version WebOSQuickInstall-4.4.0 better to use? Or is that even what it is for?

I want to O/C but I'm not real clear on the Preware thing. I read the upgrade to 1.8.3 post but does WebOS already come with Preware?

I've been through all the stickies and downloaded all the files I think I need to prepare for surgery.

Honestly, I'm not sure why I even bought this thing. Just another toy to play with I guess. :D

welcome to the TouchPad forums. Download CM9 Alpha 2 copy it to your TP.

Then boot into recovery (ClockworkMod)
- Wipe Data/Factory Reset
- Format System (under the Mounts and Storage submenu in CWM)
- Format Data (if you're superstitious...wipe data/factory reset already did this, but I know some people still want to later, rinse, repeat. ;-) )
- Format Cache (if you're superstitious...wipe data/factory reset already did this, but I know some people still want to later, rinse, repeat. ;-)

Still in CWM:

Flash the following files using the Install zip from SD card option

- Alpha .6 power menu patch: update-cm-9.0.0-RC0-Touchpad-a2.0-r

- Gapps: gapps_ics_4.0.3_v11.zip

That should give you a "clean install" of CM9.

For WebOS, its been forever since I booted into it, but you can go to settings, and reset, then somewhere in there is a option to do a factory reset, which will wipe everything and make it a out of box experience.

Thanks jericko, that will get me started. :)

Is this: Alpha .6 power menu patch: update-cm-9.0.0-RC0-Touchpad-a2.0-r : 2 different files? Or is it just the update CM9 file?

I started down this path a month ago, and have been watching the nightlies while waiting a few days after before updating.

You can learn more about the nightly builds here:

[ROM] UNOFFICIAL CM9 Nightly Builds - RootzWiki

I just installed the nightly build from 3-17 and all has been well. Before that I was running the build from 3-4. Despite being alphas, these appear to be very stable and have mininal issues from my experience.

Also, I would highly encourage you to add the "Supreme" mod from rohan - it cleans up a few little niggling issues with the nightly builds and adds to the user experience:

[MODPACK][3/10][NEW]SUPREME Mods v1.3 [Faster, Smoother, Faster Wifi, Better Battery] - RootzWiki

If you're really going to be bleeding edge, get on the Twitter feed for the tenderloin builds and you'll get links and updates as they are released. Not for the faint of heart, but if you want to be an early adopter, this is the place.

The Touchpad is the first device I have ever rooted, and I will say that the folks both here and at RootzWiki have done a fantastic job making the experience both easy and painless for us noobs.

Thanks Dan. I'll try the nightly builds and the Mod when the touchpad gets in. I've rooted and ROM'ed both my Galaxy S II and the Optimus V so at least I have a little experience with CWM. I even bricked my Optimus V and, after a week screwing around, finally brought it back to life. I'd rather not have to do that again so I like to get all the info I can from experienced users. :D

Got my TP today finally. I've learned a lot by screwing up I think. :D

It had MIUI already on it and gb's of stuff from the previous owner but WebOS was back to stock. I went through the signup with HP and then it said an update to WebOS 3.0.5 was available, so ok. After the update I lost the dual boot.

I thought maybe it had cleared CM9 off so I went through installing the latest nightly and it got stuck at the android screen. I used ACMEUinstaller and cleaned everything off. Installed a different nightly and now back in business again. And have 2 extra gig than I did before. I guess the previous build was still on there. :o Oh well, I wanted to start from scratch anyway.

A couple questions, Does the TP have trouble charging through a laptop USB? Mine wasn't. Also, in CM9 how do you enable mass storage when you plug in the USB? I'm used to a notification drop down on my phone but don't see anything in CM9?

Glad you figured it out. When you screw it up, fix it, screw it up, and fix it, you might actually learn something useful, even if it's not to screw around with it. :D

You have a 2 amp charger, but the usb port on your computer only puts out 1/4 of that (1/2 amp), so no, it's not going to charge when plugged into your computer, esp. if the screen is on, but it might slow it down a little bit.

Here's more on the usb mode issue: http://androidforums.com/hp-touchpad/504988-file-transfer-cm9.html

lol..very true, and thanks for the info.

I now have preware, Govnah and Uberkernal installed. I have so many TP related windows open in my browser on my laptop I can't find anything. :D

A question about overclocking. Does it just apply to WebOS or is it still O/C'ed when I boot into CM9?

Nope, each is it's own separate kernel and is OC'd separately.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I checked the performance section yesterday in CM9. I could change the govenor but I couldn't select anything as far as changing the cpu speed. It was greyed out. Do I have to install a different CM9 kernal for it to work?

*edit*
Nevermind. I see some kernals at XDA.
