Root Brand new guy here, got a Motorola Droid X 2.2

Hi,

so I used to have an iphone and decided to switch over to verizon because its more affordable. The upside is that I get a great phone with a great price, the Droid X.

I jail broke my iphone, I liked the free movies, themes, apps, managing the way it ran, etc etc.

When it comes to the Droid X I feel like a newbie- there's tons of abbreviations I don't understand and I really want to "Root" the phone because the battery life on it sucks. You have to run everything on super low or your battery dies in 2 hrs, and that makes the phone pretty much useless...like a dodge viper that gets 6 miles to the gallon...

So, I want to root...But how do I go about it?

What do I do first? What after that? And that?

Do I back up my phone first? (if so, how? there's a built in backup app, is that what I use? Backup Assistant)

If I Root my phone, how can I go back to stock if I want to take my phone into verizon for whatever reason?

Can I still use verizon upgrades if i Root my phone?

What program do i use to root MY phone? Motorola Droid X running Stock 2.2.1 software

Is there a 1 button program to Root a droid X running 2.2.1??

What is a ROM??

What is DEODEX'ing your FROYO????

What is SBF?

What is RSD?

What is OTA?

Sorry for all the questions- I just have no clue, had the phone for 4 days and I'm already trying to kill it =P Just wanna do it right!

Please let me know if anyone has the answers!!

Thank you so much!

how long does Z4 take to root?
Been at the Z4 mod screen for over 10 minutes.... nothing's happening

I've got a brand new motorola droid X 2.2.1 version

help lol

My first time rooting it took a few minutes my second time it took about ten minutes. I thought something was wrong but it should just do its thing.

so i pulled my battery and waited a minute, reinstalled battery and ran the z4 program again and now my phone did something and its now rebooting- I think its working- yay!

After boot, look under your app list and there should be a superuser app. If its there, you should be rooted.

so i wanted to check if my phone is rooted and i read that i can turn off the phone then turn it back up while holding the HOME button and the power key

when I did this- I got the picture of motorola, then a little green droid and to its left there was a triangle with an exclamation point inside of it... wtf does that mean?

I read i was supposed to see a black screen with green writing

Sorry guys, I missed your replies...

Yeah I got a superuser app at the bottom of my app list....

So how do i start deleting the useless crap?

Whats the process for it and what apps do i definitely NOT need...stuff like blockbuster, amazon mp3 kindle madden nfl 11 ....

What I'm looking for is better battery life for the most part and the tethering app thing- how do i get that?

Thanks guys

your best bet would be to go with a aosp rom that would delete these apps for you....you can manually delete them usuing root explorer and other methods but it can turn into a headache down the road when you need/want to ota and have to restore what you deleted since you may sometimes forget ,,,,whatever route you choose make sure you make a backup befor flashing anything or deleting anything so you can restore the backup when you do need to ota....this link may help

As for battery life if it is a new phone. Charge it full and drain it completely before plugging it in to charge again. After a few weeks it should be in good shape.

Once you get familiar with everything and get a ROM on it that you like you will be pleasantly surprised with the battery life I assure you.

So I wanted to say Thank you for all of the info.

I have read a lot and it seems everyone has diff opinions about what to do and how to do it and in what order...so I wanted to just actually "ask" but I made sure I read as much as I could and didn't want to bother anyone if all the information was similar ( thus, making it seem like its safe to just not ask and just do...)

I am really annoyed with the battery issue- I actually completely drained it today and am currently letting it charge to see if that helps...

Another big issue I am having is that I have such a poor signal.... I have 1, 2 or 3 bars most of the time if I am inside a building/house/garage/ anything with a roof... and at my gym, which has a basement I get absolutely no bars...my iphone 3g would get 3 bars even inside of the sauna room...which is at the very bottom of the gym...

I also have extremely slow internet most of the time, if any at all... my phone is supposed to use 3g, but most of the time it switches from 3g to X1, I'm guessing that's the equivalent of 2g for the verizon phones...I hate that because being a student I need the internet so much and having to get "failed to load page" messages all the time sucks the big one- specially when my friends make fun of me for it with their iphone 4's and EVO's, lol.

I am thinking of switching to an HTC evo 4...I like the idea of the 4g network ( which my friend gets SOO much coverage on here in LA,Pasadena,Alhambra, La puente, etc etc) and the double sided camera's, plus the screen is just as big as the android X... the phone itself is just as fast too and the battery seems to last soo much longer than mine....

Today we were moving a refrigerator and he was using his phone to map out our route the entire time, texting, and surfing at the same time and I was just sending and receiving texts, taking a picture or two here and there to mess around and my battery was at 50% while his was at 65% with that much more usage. We both had the phones charged the same just to test them and he blew me out of the water.

I'm hopeful that its the fact that its a new phone that the battery hasn't cycled out correctly yet, but the signal issue I really can't handle, I just can't afford to...

So I'm looking already at getting an HTC EVO 4 and if verizon doesn't give me some solid reasons for the issues I'm having I'm definitely switching over. I thought the grass would be greener on the other side ( have had iphones since they came out and I've yet to find a better phone- personal opinion, they do what i need exactly as i need it, no arguements please, lol) but as my experience is going I should of stuck with what I knew even though its so much more expensive...but I might just have to check out the grass with sprint and see if their grass is greener than the ones i've tried, lol!

I reeeeeally like the lay out of this phone but man- if the phone doesn't carry out its basic function, it might as well serve as a paper weight.

But I'm really hoping my issue's are fixable- I really like the phone, and I was pretty excited about the rooting thing since I jail broke my iphone the minute I got it and it was just so good to have so much control over your phone, its a healthy hobby when compared to running across freeway's and doing drug's or having unprotected sex! (jk about the last 1) =P

Hehe, Just wanted to fill you guys in and say TY for the help I've received so far, really appreciate it.

Ben
