Breaking News - Update Does Not Contain GPS Fix

I Googled the update as soon as I received it. Saw an official page from AT&T that talked about what it fixed, nowhere was GPS mentioned. If it doesn't come from the carrier/manufacturer it's just speculation.

This is what I don't understand. If gps on your phone is so important, then why have so many people kept the Captivate while continuing to complain about it? I don't get it. Seriously.

Do not misunderstand what I am saying. I think everyone is within their rights to complain that the gps on the Captivate does not work well. It clearly does not work as well as gps on other phones. I am in no way telling people that they should just accept a product that they are not happy with. But if you need or want a flawless gps on your phone, and you are not happy with the Captivate, TAKE IT BACK.

How hard is this? If I buy a tv, or a computer, or an appliance, and it does not work the way I expected it to, I return it and buy a different product. It is a simple process. I don't hope the company will provide a timely update, and I don't keep it and complain.

Everyone on here who bought a Captivate knew they had 30 days to return the phone. Why would anyone who had a strong need or want for good working gps keep the phone past 30 days hoping for a fix?

For what its worth, I love my Captivate. But I do not have a strong need for gps on my phone, and the gps was not a selling point for me. If it was, I would have purchased a different phone. I am not trying to flame or troll here, I just wish people would do what's best for them and get a phone that meets their needs, not complain about a phone that obviously does not.

I hate to admit it but after my outburst in this thread...I went to the store this morn, maybe 8-10 minute drive and the GPS pretty much didn't lock on at all while actually driving :( Once stopped in the parking lot it did. Though that may have been because I turned use wireless networks back on in the lot, for all I know.

I still think it's better, though.

I'm beginning to wonder if it's a hardware problem, which is obviously the scariest possibility here.

I reported yesterday that my gps seemed to be working... I would like to amend that. It works in stationary. Situations but, navigation is horrible, when it has a lock, its way off, most of the drive however, I did not have a lock at all.

I agree. I took mine back over 30 days ago. Hoping to see a fix so I can repurchase with some confidence. Waiting until that, or something competitive comes along.

This thread seems to have diverged from the actual topic. It is interesting that we have not heard more stories such as the original post that corroborates that it really does not contain the GPS fix. I think most people do, or will ultimately, realize it is not in this update. Improvement yes, fixed, no.

Soonersfan...check some of the GPS threads that are already there, There are a lot of different things to try, that seem to help some people, not others, and some only temporarily. You'll just need to try some of them.

What don't you get?

It simply means that the gps functionality is very important, but not to the point of returning the phone. I fall into that category. From day one, I thought about it and decided that even if the gps NEVER works in any way, shape or form, I would still not return the phone, having considered my options: 1) I got it for free, 2) in all other areas, it is the best at&t Android phone, and 3) I happen to be stuck with at&t due to various reasons, and 4) I want an Android phone.

But that doesn't mean I should not expect/hope for a fix, or not complain about it.

My gps was ok prior to the update. I don't know if it's the area I live in or just pure luck, but I would typically get a lock within 10 seconds, and would keep the lock when using google nav in my car.

Since the update, my phone is slower to get a lock, and the nav is not as accurate as before.

So I am not sure what the update did. But again, this is not a deal breaker for me. I am just putting this out there so that others have this info in case it is helpful in any way.

We'll have to agree to disagree here, as I completely disagree with your view point. If the faulty gps is enough for you to repeatedly complain about it on an internet forum, then in my opinion, you should have taken it back for another phone.

There are other options out there, even on At&t. Rather then keeping a phone that you are clearly unhappy with, why not try a different handset.

I feel like if you are keeping the phone while at the same time knowing its flaws, that you are as much the problem as samsung/at&t.

It cost me $146 to break the contract but that's cheaper than 90 a month for 22 mo. with a broken phone and all the headaches and frustration. I'm at peace now. I'll wait for the next HTC Androd and sell the IPhone 4. Loved Android hated Samsung. Peace

Good, one less complaint about GPS. This forum should be renamed the -Global Satellite Consortium-.

30 days are over for a lot of people. Personally, I would have 100% returned it IF Samsung didn't go on record stating they were aware of the GPS issue and would be releasing a fix. In my case, they did not stick to their word and I think they should allow everyone either a full refund or exchange to a new unit. Now that my trial period is over, I'm stuck.

Personally, my GPS has improved, greatly. By the time the screen loads, I'm within 20 meters of my actual location, and the "center" of my radius is usually exactly where I am.

Please make sure that we are debating and discussing the topic on hand and not dragging other members into the mud.

Remember, ANDROID (in and of itself) is awesome, that's why we are all here!

I have a feeling Samsung will be releasing another update to address the GPS. I bet they just wanted to get something out before the end of the month. I know the months not over for another week but still, I can see them just putting out what they have to fulfill their promise. This is pure speculation though.

Off probation, eh? Congratulations. I liked your sig so much that it's worth getting you back on probation just to see it again.

Endoran, you suck! :)

(I put a smiley face in there because a mod once told me it would keep me out of trouble. Just remove it in your mind!)

My Captivate is locking onto 10+ satellites in under 20 seconds now, although I don't know if it had anything to do with the update or the settings I changed in my phone. This is with Use Wireless networks disabled.

In LbsTestMode I changed Server FQDNType to AUTO Config and Operation Mode to Standalone (then rebooted my phone) and it seemed to fix locking and then some. It's outperforming my Tomtom by over a minute. I previously had the XDA recommended settings and it rendered my GPS completely unable to lock.

GPS Test, GPS Status and Google Navigation all lock in under 20 seconds now.

my gps works a million times better now too...at least it locks on like...lightning fast

Are any other settings different from stock default?

If not, could you please post the other settings?

I'm suspecting that the update changed my settings. The gps mode was ms based after the update and I think the default Is stand alone. I could be wrong though (i.e.i changed it in the past and forgot to change it back)

We kept it beyond 30 days because we were told there would be a fix. Simple as that. Had I known the wait would be like this I would have returned the device long ago. Now I'm stuck because I had faith in the manufacturer to make it right.

+1.

These comments about taking the captivate back if you don't like the gps are the reasons I left the iphone community(if you don't like the proximity sensor take it back). I'm angry because I feel like Samsung took a page out of Apple's book and stalled everyone till our 30 days were up.

I waited two months and they gave me Quickoffice, an application i could get in the market. What the ___?! All of these complaints about gps, and it wasn't mentioned in AT&T's description of the update? Really? That doesn't seem fishy to you guys?

The amount of information and misinformation is staggering. How many different threads, posts, etc have said "it did include the gps fix" or "it didnt include the gps fix". Well, which is it???

If it doesnt include the fix then there is still hope. If it did, I got about a week to get this thing returned.

Well also after this update the lbs test menu is no longer avalible by the old method so the old quick fix is no long avalible. maybe its just my phone but the *#*#1472365#*#* does nothing anymore. phone updated on 9-22-2010. method worked on 9-21-10. can also confirm my wifes does not access this menu anymore after her update. also might wanna check your staus bar for burn in. my phone burned in and i got a new one its way.

I and other have mentioned it in other threads, but I'll put it here as well.

You can still access this menu with an activities shortcut.

With launcher pro, long press your screen. Select shortcuts -> activities -> LbsTestMenu.

GoCats7, if you have a week left I recommend you return the phone. i'm stuck, waited past my 30 days for a fix that I thought would solve an issue and it didn't. Unless you are willing to deal with the current state of the phone, save your money and get another phone. There are many other phones out there that are just as good and don't have issues like this one. Looking at it now, I should have gone with HTC and the EVO. HTC has pumped several updates since the EVO came about, around the same time as the Captivate.

Although there's a possibility Samsung will one day get it right, I've yet to see any signs of that. Also, so you can answer your own question, call Samsung Tech support tomorrow and see how well it goes. Call two or three times, each time you'll get a different answer. I called AT&T and could not be helped but they wasted no time to get Samsung on the phone. At the end of the call the AT&T representative and myself could not believe we got two different answers in less than 15 mins from Samsung. After seeing that, I realized AT&T is in the same boat as us, hoping Samsung gets it right.

I have never returned a phone and regret that I may have to this one. I bought it from amazon, if i get another phone or even another captivate....do I get another 30 days or just stuck with my original 30 days?

Never bought a phone from Amazon, always dealt with the carrier via one of their stores. I'm sure their 30 day window is the same, make sure they cancel your 2 year agreement if you had to sign up for one to get the phone at a discounted price. I love Android and my next phone will be Android based but if you are stuck with AT&T, the IPhone 4 is a better option at the moment.
