Root Brick City - Noob. Help please!

Lurker
I have had my Evo 4G rooted for a little over a week using clockworkmod and Cyanogen Nightlies.

So, I'm in the car for about 45 minutes, and I turn on the mobile hotspot so my daughter can tether Netflix through my tablet. I see that my battery is getting under 10-15%; so I plug in my car charger. As we are about to pull in the driveway, the phone goes dead. I mean dead. I noticed that it is very hot (relatively speaking). I switch batteries - still nothing.

I've tried to hold volume down and power - nothing.

Any advice anyone?

Thanks in advance.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that sucks. try putting your phone in the freezer to cool it down if it is still hot. once cooled down then try and see if you can bootup.

Thanks for your replies, you all.

What will Sprint have to say if I take it back to the repair center, and it's been rooted?

Also, I did not pick up warranty through Sprint. I have Squaretrade instead. Is that a huge deal?

not sure about squaretrade. sprint used to offer $35 to non insurance people if it is fixable. not sure now with the evo going eol. you might have to go through your other insurance. it might be fine if you can't get the phone back up and running.

Uh oh. Freezer got it super cold, but it didn't revive it. Dang!!!

For future reference, is there something to be known about rooted, hotspot, plugged into car charger and over heating? I have plugged into a car charger a million times and never had heat issues.

i have never heard of that before. it might be a cm7 issue. i had that before where just being on cm7 my phone would get hot and then it would reboot.

Also if you have the rubber htc cover it dont help the situation. I remove mine when doing things like netflix or playing a game for a long time. When mine starts getting hot the led will start flashing red but if its charging it wont flash.

1 up on that:D

Worse yet, I had it in an Otter Box. My guess is that it just overheated and may be dead. I'm charging the Blackberry backups as we type. Ugh.

I think you fried it with the overheating. I used my GPS for an 8+hr drive last month and toward the end of the trip, it was really hot and my SetCPU profile kicked in and knocked the processor back down for me. This was on MikG and not CM7. I don't think you'll have anything to worry about with Sprint knowing it's rooted or not though, seeing as if you'll prolly have a replacement phone and be long gone before they'd ever see what software was on it.

If it won't boot, you don't have to worry. Take it in, they'll get you a replacement.
Also if asked it wasn't rooted. ;)

That sucks, but it's easy to do especially if you're running GPS and doing other things. On my first Evo, I went on a trip running GPS while plugged in the whole time. 3 hours later the battery temp was 115 degrees. No rebooting or anything, but my phone eventually became a reboot machine several months later due to overheating. Just a hardware issue that is present on some phones I guess. No big deal though, I got a replacement with no issues.
