OK, so I followed the instructions and thought all was going well. The N7 was picked up by the pc and when I tried to unlock the bootloader it came back with "failed. Too many links"
Any ideas?
I know I'm (very) late to this thread, but it kind of seems like there might be a hardware issue going on .
We've seen things similar to this before in the 1st gen (2012) and 2nd gen (2013) Nexus 7s and there've been a few unfortunate instances where the tools and processes already mentioned above didn't work.
The root toolkit is the only trick for Nexus devices I've learned so far. Still don't have a good grasp on ADB/Fastboot yet and was really hoping @saltire method would have had OP up and running.
Hmm, was it stuck on erasing userdata for a while? As my compadre scary alien has said that's not a good sign, and points to emmc failure. There is a slight chance that its also USB port related, are you using USB3 ports? If you can get access to a pc/laptop with USB2 ports might be worth a go. Don't think its going to be successful but you never know.
Unfortunately it looks like it, you're stuck if you can't get the unlock process to complete successfully. When this first happened a few lucky people managed to get this fixed by Asus at zero cost, even though they were out of warranty. This involved replacement of the motherboards. I would guess the cost of the repair would be as much if not more than a new N7, assuming you can actually track one down.
Edit: ninja'd by @scary alien but he's right, it's worth trying everything you can first.
Thanks guys I will try it on a different PC. @scary alien what did you mean by the manual methods? I'm assuming the command prompt from the mini-sdk folder?
Yeah, all the stuff that the Nexus Root Toolkit does can easily be done manually...but using the NRT is probably much quicker to try since it'll download all of the drivers and files for you.
As i have never used the flash all bat. Or a tool kit. I would say using the newest minimal adb/fastboot and a different PC & different cable to eliminate any issues would be best. I will boot my laptop up in a bit and post the manual commands.
On the other hand if that fails as well. I will have to agree 100% with the hardware failure prognosis.
I've been thinking about your problem some more. If you were able to successfully unlock your bootloader, could you try and flash a custom recovery like TWRP image? If successful you could try a custom ROM. Still not ready to call it dead yet.
