Broken screen troubles

The screen on my Desire is done in. Not physically broken, just not working. There's a small bar at the bottom that lights up, but other than that it's not showing anything. The phone still seems to work fine - I received a text (that I can't read now and still have no idea who it's from!) and the alarm went off as usual.

Couple of things I would like to know:

Is it fixable (either by me or by a shop)?

If it's not, and I want to sell it as spare n repair, how can I wipe my info off the phone without having a screen to see what I'm doing?

how long have you had it? proof of purchase?
htc will repair that for you if there are no signs of physical damage

Can't find proof of purchase, say about 6-7 months old. Looking at it today there was a crack on the screen I hadn't noticed. Took it to my local phone repair, they say they can replace the screen in 3 days for
