Root Building from source...

Android Expert
I am going to get a old desktop sometime early November and maybe upgrade the RAM and Boot Ubuntu on it and try to build CM7 and Raver's ICS from source. I don't know the specs of the old desktop, or even the OS, but I wanna know some things about building from source:

  1. What is the minimum RAM needed to build 2.3.4 - 2.3.7?
  2. What is the minimum RAM needed to build 4.0/4.1?
  3. Recommended CPU? or is building mostly dependent on RAM?
  4. Ubuntu 10.04 or Mint?
  5. Any tips/precautions? Any guides I can find?

i have AMD FX-6100, 8GB's of ram, and a 500GB hard drive dedicated to linux. it takes me 40 mins to compile, on my old dual core, 2gb ddr2 setup it took 3 hours.

there is only 2 requirements to build android, hard drive space and a 64 bit cpu. if you wanna build it on your netbook and take 4 days then by all means...

More RAM/swap = faster build?

Why does it take so long to compile & build... and the outcome of it is like 80+MB. Lol:D

more RAM def helps, but most of the speed comes from the cpu. So If one is planning to build a box with intentions of compiling android, 8 core cpu, 16GB+ of RAM is a must. SSD's help a lil but not as much as some would lead you to believe. Swap would help if you lack enough ram, but would speed it up like RAM will as its using the hdd for it. ;)

i dont think ive tried compiling cm7, cm9/10 is around 150MB's i imagine cm7 i could prolly build much much faster. it takes me around one min and 47 seconds to make CWM though :)

swap will somewhat help but no where near having ram will do since it has to read and write to the hard drive to store it on teh swap while other things may be trying to
