Buying Xoom or Not ?

Here are my personal buying decisions. Feel free to disagree!!

$699-no contract-slam dunk, first in line
$699-2yr contract-no
$799-no contract-no
$799-2yr contract-no,no,no!!

I actually like the Toshiba specs better than the Moto, but Toshiba is late to the game, maybe not until June. Moto has accessories listed already. I don't need 3 or 4G. I will pay a little more because the WIFI isn't out yet, but if Moto and Verizon get greedy, then I will wait.
 
Well I am getting it, period. I hope no contract is required.

I guess everyone has their tipping point for price, and that is very specific to each person. The only curious thing with your decision matrix I see is that it seems for you with no contract: $699 is definite yes, but $799 is a definite no. So I guess for you that $100 seems to be everything. I can understand that, and I bet others may have that same threshold. In a vacuum, those prices aren't the worst thing I can imagine, but I think with the iPAD around (soon iPAD 2), and then later other Honeycomb competition, that $799 price is going to push away many potential buyers if it ends up priced there ..

agree with your price points on launch day. At 800, I am willing to wait for other options, or for the price to drop.

I wish that moto would release a "value" xoom to build market share. 16gb memory, no rear camera (who will really shoot hd video with a 10 in device??), no barometer, etc. Price this at 499-599. That gives people a choice between the value and the "premium" version at 699-799.
 
I'm still a maybe. I'm definitely going to compare the Xoom and the new iPad 2 when it comes out before I make up my mind. I REALLY want to get the Xoom, but I don't need a data plan so that's going to be a big player for me. If I can buy a WiFi only version or buy one with data plan and then dump a month later at my price point then I'll most likely go Xoom. If I can't go that avenue I'll most likely find my way into an iPad.

My decision point is a little curious, in that I would not go the extra $100 if it was $799, no contract. I did buy an Ipad, a 64GB Wifi for $699, and I took it and paid more for it because it was the only one in stock at the Apple store. But sometimes that Apple store is intoxicating and "you have to have it". I eventually gave it to my daughter after I got my Droid X. I am now at the point of not "having to have it", since I have already experienced the "tablet" experience. If it comes in at a fair price, I will get it. Frankly, if the Toshiba Tablet were available the same day, I would get the Toshiba product.
 
I will be getting mine day one. The iPad2 is not an option for me, I'm not a fan of apple and lack of customization and the overall boring grid of icons and lack of widgets is a huuuuge turn off for me.

As far as price goes I guess we will have to wait and see. $699 off contract is a good price point IMO when you consider how much a smartphone costs off contract (Droid X is $569 off contract). So I really don't understand why people think this thinng should cost 500 or less.

The other reason I only want the Zoom is because HC will be blur-less and the build quality of Moto's phones is great IMO. My OG Droid still runs like a top.

Hardware wise I don't see tablets getting much better than this for now. Im sure quad cores are down the road at some point but for now the Zoom spec wise is a beast. Even if its $799 I will be picking one up.

Im sure the iPad2 with comparable features (but it wont have USB or HDMI like the zoom) will cost around the same amount.

I'm also interested to see how the data plans will work. (Month to Month vs. a 1-2 year contract).

Yup, makes a lot of sense. I bet you are not alone in this kind of thinking. Folks that can be patient will probably wait and see at that price point.
 
I personally will be buying one on launch day, given any of the no contract scenarios above. My guess is that the Xoom will launch for $699 (after instant savings or mail-in rebate), whether you get it at Verizon or Best Buy.

I'm not going to worry about pricing though, until I see a screenshot from Verizon's InfoCenter. We should definitely see that at some point in the next week or two.
 
I am still leaning towards buying it either way. One of my tipping points is that Moto will not be messing with the software at all. It will be Google's baby and that makes very excited. I can't wait to see more videos of this from MWC
 
699 is my sweet spot. Wife has an ipad and I owned galaxy tab for a while, so I'm also not in a rush for my first tablet experience.

While I can afford 800, I'm not Willing To Pay that at launch day when other options will soon be available. I suppose advance reviews could change my mind (10/10 from engadget!), but I plan on being patient.

Don't forget to add on vzw activation and first months service.
 
Getting on launch day. I would like to know when that is asap, so I can request a vacation day to be first in line and spend the rest of the day playing. :D Tipping point for me is it being pure google.

I would like to know, as well, because my wife is due on the 21st, and I want to have a tablet in my hands before we go to the hospital.

Jha's comments during the earnings call ("may get pushed to March") has me a little concerned that there's no way we'll see this on February 17th as the Best Buy leak suggested.

Personally, I just REALLY want it to hit before mid-March at the latest, but the sooner the better.

PS - Congrats on the baby. I have two.
 
I'm willing to pay the $800 +fees. However, I'm feeling like $700 will more likely be the real price after savings (I'm not usually the optomist, but I'm trying to WILL it to be ;)).

Though I might have difficulty getting it on release day because I have to work and all you jerks hogging them, I will try to get it ASAP.

I've been putting off getting a Laptop because of the potential Tablets. I know that if I get a Tablet and then need a laptop, I'll have 2 toys. If I get a laptop, it'll be hard to justify a Tablet as well. It's all in the sequencing. Sort of like the ole adage "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission." I can take a day or two of "You silly man" looks from the wife.

If it doesn't launch on 2/17, I would be really surprised if they didn't start taking pre-orders pretty close to that date. Honestly, I would be surprised if they didn't do preorders, since it typically builds excitement, and also helps them establish future demand.

Point being that your having to work shouldn't stop you from getting one on launch day. Heck, looking at device preorders in the past, sometimes they even ship early.

Very true. I got my DInc the day before release. I could handle that.
 
I'll probably be getting one after the first week. Just to see you guys (and the hackers) iron out all the kinks! Hehe. ;)

I am price insensitive -- this is like the OG Droid launch on Verizon: Vanilla Android, hopefully unlocked, Moto build quality, huge leap forward for Android(1.6->2.0 big difference! IMHO anyway).

Thanks, this will be our first. I was hoping to make a slideshow to keep the my wife busy during labor. If the Xoom isn't out yet, then I will have to make it on my comp. Watching movies on it would be a plus as well
 
I'll get it on launch day, regardless of price, unless the pre-launch reviews are really bad. I've been waiting for a great Android tablet, and my birthday is in early March so the timing is perfect.
 
ive owned 3 iPads (Crazy I know) and 2 Tabs (also Crazy I know)...while I loved both of them, hence why I kept switching between the two...the Xoom is for me. I am buying that as soon as its released
