Calender Problem on Kitkat. Is it just me?

I just upgraded to kitkat from JB a few days ago and I must say I am not liking the new interface a lot, but it seems to run smoother then JB was on my phone. I was trying to add an event to my Calender today for the first time and I ran into some trouble. When I open the calender app it ask me to add an account for the calender. I already have my phone setup to sync with my google account so it should not be asking this to start with, but I went ahead and entered my google account info and it came back and said that "There is a problem with connecting to google serves. Please try again later." To see if there was actually a problem with the google servers, I went to settings and accounts and performed a full manual sync and all went well, so there is nothing wrong with the google servers. I went back to the calender app and skipped adding an account and got to the calender, but when I tried to add an event, it came up and said that I had to add an account to use that function. I clicked OK and it brought a list of all the accountson my phone (i.e. Facbook, twiiter etc.), all that is EXCEPT for my google account. For some reason the calender app can see all of my accounts, except for my google account, which the one I want it to sync to.

So I am wondering, is this a common problem with Kitkat or is it unique to me?

Can't say that I've seen any issues with the calendar and any account, including the default Google account.

This is my i-727. I upgraded from 4.2.1 to 4.4.4 using this guide here: Update AT&T Galaxy S2 Skyrocket SGH-I727 To Android 4.4.2 KitKat via CM11 Nightly–How To | True Android | #1 Custom Android Resource

Of course this is not a stock rom and I expected there might be some problems. I only upgraded because 4.2.1 (stock rom) had become so sluggish and glitchy on my phone that I had not choice. Memory consumption was out of control and the phone was so sluggish I could not even type a text message. I was having to reboot the phone about every 10 minutes just to get a short window of functionality before it would consume all the memory and freeze up. It is running very smoothly now with this stripped down version of kitkat, but I am having some problems like the one I am describing here. I figured I would post here to see if this was a common problem with kitkat before going over to the CM forum to report a glitch with the rom.

Most definitely a CM problem, especially if you installed a nightly and not the latest stable version.

Are you sure you flashed the correct gapps? I haven't flashed CM in a while so forgive me if they bundle gapps now with the rom.

This a first time for me to use CM so I am not sure what I did. I just followed the instructions. What is the difference between the Nightly and the stable? When I went to download the rom from the link page there were several roms and I just downloaded the newest one. Where would I go to find a Stable kitkat rom for the 1-727?

I have moved this thread to the Android Applications forum since we are dealing with an issue with an application :)

Hope this is alright!

Totally fine. I never know where to post my questions because I never no where the problem lies to start with. Some problems are hardware, other are app related, while others are android related. I never know what's at fault so I just post to the most general place and see where it goes.

You can find the stable roms here https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=skyrocket&type=stable

It doesn't look like CM-11 (Kit Kat) has a stable release for the Skyrocket yet. The nightlies are pretty much works in progress. As the developers refine the roms they release them nightly (hence the name) and people will flash and test them and report back what works and what doesn't. when they've got it to a point where it's usable they will label it "stable".

If you want something that's close to stock Kit Kat you can try the SuperNexus rom. I've got it running on my i777 and it's very stable and pretty fast for a 3 year old phone.

Thanks. As of right now, there are only two glitches I have found with the version of Kitkat I have running on my i-727. The calender issue and a bluetooth issue. Not sure what the calender issue is but, It even effects other calender apps. I installed "aCalender" and it does about the same thing. As far as bluetooth goes, it works great for about 2 hours and then the antenna shuts off requiring a reboot to get it to turn on again.

I might try that spuernexus rom you suggested. Can I flash it with the ClockworkMod Recovery that I used to flash the 4.4.4 nightly?

Okay. Got supernexus up and running. One thing I noticed right off is the lack of a text messaging manager. Any Ideas on what I should use for this service? I have never had to find app for this because it was always standard in the other roms.

Never used hangouts before. What is that? I am nervous about using google services because they are constantly inventing new stuff, doing away with old stuff and forcing you to learn whole new apps all the time (I like sticking with what I am comfortable with). I try to use all non google apps for everything because of this. I guess I am of to old school that believes that it is not smart to put all your eggs in one basket. I mean, if you are completely dependent on google's services for everything, and their servers go down (which does happen), you are toast.

My brother sent me a text and it came through on Hangouts. I guess I will try it for a while. What are the chances of google up and deciding to invent some new messaging system and do away Hangouts, like they did with Picasa web albums? This is a rhetorical question of course.

Thanks.

Another thing that I notice in the 4.4.4 version I had and it seems to be this way in this version as well, is that there is no live widgets. What I mean by LIVE is widgets that show an indicator when new info is received. Like in the old yellow messaging app in 4.2.1. If you got a new text message, a little red number would appear on the widget on the home screen. Same thing with the email app. I am not seeing this with the hangouts widget and the new email app. I also hate the new email app. It provides no way to select all emails for deletion (an absolute must for me). You have to slide each email individually to delete it. Arrrggg! Stop changing things GOOGLE!!!!!!!

If I recall how hangouts works, it just consolidates a bunch of messaging methods but still maintains the actual data in the traditional locations. For example, I use hangouts for most of my messaging, but if I open the messaging app (old text-only app) all the messages are still there, so they are obviously accessing a common data location.

Odds are Google will change hangouts or drop it entirely, or mutate it into a four headed rhinoceros that brings you coffee when you tap it's third horn with a kazoo. That's the nature and whimsy of Google.

Your issues with changes in apps - at least some of them, email for instance - may be with apps installed by the phone manufacturer that replace the standard Google apps. IOW Google may have nothing to do with some of your complaints.

If you don't like Hangouts and want a simple, clean app, the standard SMS app is available:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thinkyeah.message

Thanks for the link. I used that app for a few days last week and I liked it okay, but it also did not have a live widget option. If I did not hear the new text notification sound, I would never know I had received a text message. I looked around to see if there was a way to create a live widget for texting and email, but could not find one.

Well, that may be, but what I am talking about are the texting and email apps that came with the latest two roms I have tried which are both vanilla roms that do not have any custom phone manufacturer apps or bloatware.
