Root Came up on a hurdle while trying to root

So I took steps from the sticky thread "Rooting For Dummies... The Gingerbread edition" to install Ubuntu on VirtualBox so I can run Linux off of my Mac. I began running Ubuntu and was prompted with this message when installing Ubuntu 11

I stopped because of that first selection. I was scared of erasing everything on my laptop because I don't have it backed up anywhere. So I tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 and thought it might be different so again I came up on something like this:

I've never done anything like this before and would like some input as to what I should do. I really REALLY want to root my phone but I don't know where to go next. Thanks in advance.

Okay, I'll help out. I have dial up, so I can't view those pictures (it'll take like 30 minutes). I'm guessing the part you are worried about is where the ubuntu installer wants you to partition your drive.

The thing is, VBOX makes a virtual hard drive (probably 10-20gb). You can burn that whole drive if you want. Doesn't matter.

Steps (as I remember, and I've done this several times)

New VM > Find the ubuntu ISO. Select ram (1gb is plenty) Make HD (virtual file on your HD).

Go into ubuntu, install > select all the defaults. (it is quite smart at knowing what works for most (especially if you are in the US)).

Looked at pic (thanks for not having it be the whole screen ;) )
burn that whole disk. You'll be fine.

Actually I'm worried about the part on Ubuntu 11 where it says "Erase Disk and Install. WARNING: This will delete any files on the disk". And on 10.04 it asks "where do you want to put Ubuntu 10.04.03 LTS? --> Erase and use entire disk

--> specify partitions manually (advanced)

So should I continue on Ubuntu 11 which is the first pic or on 10.04 which is the second?

thats just a normal warning they through out there so people will be a bit more causious. As 9to5 has stated its a virtual drive so there is nothing there to begin with. however if this concerns you and your unable to do a backup of your current system. Try just running off the live disk. OR you could always go to a friend who has Microstuffit2ya WINDBLOWS and do it from there.
