Help Camera Tint? Blue?

Having had the original Droid and taking MANY photos while traveling for work and on vacations I was always very pleased with the quality of the photos that the phone took. Several times I would e-mail photos to various people and they could not believe that the phone took such high quality photos.

Now.....the Droid 3 that I recently purchased is another story all together, at first I thought that I was doing something wrong, got on some of the forums and noticed that I was not the only person with this issue. To make a long story short I took the phone to the local Verizon store yesterday and they said that they were not aware of any issues with the camera, I had a couple of 5X8 photos that I had printed at Costco and showed them the blue tint on the brown pelican and they attempted to fix the camera with multiple available apps, nothing really changed it to any degree that we thought was acceptable.

The last word that I got from the Verizon rep was "it is what it is" and that I am stuck with the issue as they are not aware of any pending fixes for the blue tint. If I wanted another phone I had to pay full retail for something else as my 30 days was up.

Simply put I find it difficult to understand how either Motorola or Verizon will not stand behind a product that is so blatantly inferior in the quality of photos that the camera takes. I realize it is a phone but there is no comparison between the 5 megapixel Droid 1 and the 8 megapixel Droid.

Color me blue and unhappy with my purchase.

its a color correction issue. on sunny days or indoors i dont have the blue tint problem. when its cloudy/overcast or i use the flash theres blue tint in it.

Tried everything yesterday at the Verizon store, inside, outside, with and without flash, Landscape, Portrait, Auto and Sunset, with various apps, taking photos of people, paper, walls, displays it's all with a very blue tint. The Verizon guys gave up and said I'm stuck with a camera that takes photos with a blue tint, which is not bad if only taking photos of the sky but my raw aluminum intake manifold is blue as well as the trunk on the tree outside.

I really want to apply the update but isn't the official being pushed soon? I also may root but im afraid to mess up

Yeah, I believe the official one is getting pushed very soon, since the Verizon site has the details now. I personally wasn't too concerned about applying the update since it was from the soak test and it's signed by Verizon. I don't see any reason it would keep me from updating in the future, especially since it's the same System Version as what is up on the Verizon site. I just got too excited to wait, lol! .....I also have never rooted a phone and probably never will because I too am afraid of screwing something up.

Rooting is a common fear and it was something you had to do research about as to not mess up your phone back in the day(I'm talking OG Droid). Now its basically plug your phone in and put the file on SD card and click the button that says root. There is really nothing to be scared about rooting this phone.

Here's two pictures to give you an idea of the difference since I installed the update! Both pictures were taken with the stock camera app. I picked outdoor daytime scenes since they have the most color. Both are taken on sunny days. *edit - Both are with auto white balance as well.*

The thing is you never really get over the -fear- of messing up your phone, you just get more confident that you wont. The fear is still there but its trusting yourself that makes the difference.

I've only rooted my Samsung Behold II and my Samsung Vibrant. for both i had to use ODIN and another tool which i heard were samsung specific... so idk about a different device such as moto but ill eventually probably try it.

hopefully the OTA fixes all of the cameras

I appreciate the updates on the updates! hopefully they have the necessary fixes that will eliminate the blue hue in the photos and some of the other issues with the phone. From what I read on the Verizon site they should have everyone taken care of by the end of the week. Thanks again!

You mean the OTA pushed out by the end of the week? Link please?

Install the OTA and supposedly that will be fixed.

As you've seen from the threads MOST of us have the same issue.

The color issues should be fixed with the update (VZW rolling it out now and we all should have it by Friday), or you can do the leaked one now, but from what i heard it fixes the camera. Try it and if it does not help then I'd return the phone under warranty.

You sure we'll all have it by friday?

My wife gets paid thursday and i get paid friday so i might just have to bite the bullet and have a $260 amount hold on my account while they send a new phone. cant hurt. if the new one is worse i'll just keep this one.

I finished installing the ota and playing around with the phone. I have good news and bad news.

The good news is that the phone runs a bit snappier. Blue tint in photos / video with or without flash is GONE. there is no more blue tint.

The bad news is the OTA severly and i mean REALLY degraded the quality of videos recorded. When i first got the phone i was curious as to what the minimum FPS the phone would record at. so what i did is went in to my room at night with no lights, pitch black, and recorded a video. Minimum of 20 or 19fps. Since the ota i did the same thing... 12 fps. even videos in my room with a decent mount of window light now only shoot at 12 fps and the amount of grain has increased quite a bit.

I am very very unhappy with the ota over all.. i really hope theres a way i can revert this ota and go back to stock.

Is this at 1080p? I found the 1080p and 720p recording to be laggy BEFORE I updated as well. I personally like to record at DVD quality. Much more fluid. How can you tell how many FPS it's running at? I can't find a setting.....

both 1080p and 720p in low light or even no light in a pitch black room recorded at the very minimum a 20fps (sometimes it will dip to 19 but rarely)

now in both 1080p and 720p the phone with even adequate light is only recording at 12 to 13fps. and in low or no light its going to 11fps. unacceptable. did a dvd recording aswell, 12fps. =(

How im finding this out is after i record a video i hook my phone up to my computer and go to the video. rightclick, properties, details, and if you scroll down you can see the FPS.

20 to 12 fps is HORRIBLE. I will take the slight blue tint in videos over a crappy 12fps.

I am begging everyone please..please how do i revert back to stock/virgin

Oh, cool, I never knew you could check that. I just took 3 videos outside(in daylight). Each 30 seconds long. 1@1080p, 1@720p and 1@DVD quality. The FPS were 26, 29 and 29 respectively. I also checked a blue-tinted, pre-update video recorded @ 1080p and it was 29 FPS. I haven't tried it in low light..... going to try it now and I'll give you the results.

Alright, recorded 3 videos in low light in the basement. 1 @1080p, 1@720p and 1@DVD quality and they ALL came out at 14 FPS and a little grainy. Turned on more lights (in the same basement area) and recorded another one @ 1080p and it came out not grainy and back up to 29 FPS. I personally don't find that to be surprising. If you've ever tried to use a webcam in low-light conditions, the FPS drop drastically and the grainy artifacts set in.
