Can I restore apps and settings from another phone (Motorola Milestone 2)?

Hi all,

I currently have a rooted Motorola Milestone 2. I am considering buying and rooting an unlocked and unbranded Galaxy S2. I would also like to try custom ROMs but haven't decided which one to start with.

Is there any way to backup apps and sms messages from the Milestone 2 and restore them to the Galaxy S2? All the documentation and posts I found only cover restoring a backup to the same phone, or to another phone of the same make and model.

I don't see why titanium couldn't do that. If you copy the titanium backup folder from your motorola to the gs2 sd then I'd assume it would work. Just make sure you don't restore any system data. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Shotgun is right on the money. There's normally no problem restoring any user apps (and their data) from one device to another. System apps otoh are a recipe for disaster and I strongly advise against restoring any of these.

In case anyone else looks at this. I found a program many reformats ago (changed to the SGS2 aswell) called SMS Backup+
Will back up all your Call Log, SMS, MMS all into your google account. (under seperate labels)
Then 1) when you want to reformat/change phones etc, just download it and restore to the phone;
and 2) have full access to your call history and SMSs on gmail !

(and yes i have thought that that is giving google way too much data but meh )

I tend to back up all my sms and contacts etc to sdcard using Super backup from the market. But it gets annoying reminding me every boot up i havent backed up in 15 days when i blatantly have. It works however.

For the record, using Titanium backupPro I managed to restore almost all of my non-system apps and games from the Milestone to the Galaxy s2. The few that didn't work were whatsapp and a few others I now don't remember. I also used sms backup and restore to transfer messages from one mobile to another. Thanks!
