Help Can I root and install new ROM without USB connection?

SFBayArea

After, I have updated to Jelly OS, my phone stopped connecting to my PC via USB. I've tried everything (i think) that were posted by other people - re-installing drives, kies, debag and no debag mode. Nothing works. So for some freak reason PC does not recognizes my phone. However, I want to root and install new modified ROM.
Is it possible to install ROM without USB connection to PC?

Thanks.

try connecting the phone in download mode in odin if that connects you can simply root it and flash a new recovery and then flash any rom you want

Ok, done that. Phone screen shows "Downloading... Do not turn off target!"

However, PC still cannot see my phone.

No guarantees but this has been know to works about 80% of the time, give it a shot. Completely uninstall Kies and the Drivers installed. Reboot the computer. Now download and install the latest version of Kies. Do Not Plug the phone in as yet. Once Kies and drivers are installed on your Windows 7 machine disconnect it from the internet. Once it is disconnected plug in your phone and let it install the drivers. Disconnecting the internet will force Windows to install the drivers from Kies instead of pulling their version from the Windows Update center. If this works Do Not Let Windows update the drivers through Window Update.

I know for me the only usb that works when connecting my phone is the one that came with the phone. I also have usb's from my gs1 and gs2 which do not work. Now i dont think you have to have a computer to flash recovery and definitely do not to flash ROMs when recovery is already installed. There is an app called 'Mobile ODIN' which does all the things, like flashing a kernel with recovery installed, all from the phone with no connection required. It worked great on my gs2 which would increment a flash counter if you did use a computer, I never used it on the gs3 but it still should work.

Unfortunately you need root to use Mobile Odin if I remember correctly.

There is an app that can apparently root some phones without a computer, and its available from xda-developers:

However it isn't compatible with a lot of phones, so might well not work.

On the other hand, it apparently does no harm even if it doesn't work, so maybe you've got nothing to lose by trying it. I would look into it more though if I were you...
