Help Can I use any song...

yes, you need to use an app to edit the song for length. Most editors (ringtone, etc.) don't support wma files for that. Most support MP3. Some miscellaneous programs will do it, certain media playing programs will.

...transferred from my PC (Windows Media Player)(Windows 7) as a ringtone?

Yes. Install Ringdroid, then open it and it will convert your song into a ringtone, notification, or alarm tone and place it in the proper location on your SD. You can also edit it for any length or portion of the song

I just used Kies Air to transfer wma files directly to ringtone folder. Works fine.
...the permissions scare me off. I recieve some pretty stern warnings before I hit download. Is this the same scenario with Kies Air? I'm sure this would have to be transferred over my home ne...WAIT! Couldn't I transfer via USB?

I like the Ringtone interface (looks something like Audacity), but those permissions are just troubling.
But I would still like to transfer more music for listening.
I do have File Expert for transferring, but it doesn't edit.

Yes you can transfer over USB. The main reason I use Ringdroid is the song clip editing.

Many of my ringtones I made over the last few years on different phones. When I get a new phone I transfer them to my computer over USB, then on to my new phone with the USB also.

I try not to use manufacturer specific methods of doing anything if I don't have to. I am not loyal to any manufacturer, and Kies only works with Samsung, so I have never used it for anything.

Ringdroid lets you select what part of the song and how long using a start and stop slider

No permissions involved, I just uploaded to the phone.

You get the complete song, so can't clip just the part you like. Doesn't matter to me, I use songs with intros I like. e.g. my GF's ringtone is a song she really likes:

Spandau Ballet - True - YouTube

My brother was was a big Zep head/party animal/crazy mofo back in the day before he got all married/settled down, this is his ringtone:

Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains The Same (Studio Version) - YouTube

I suppose you could go USB, but I find it so easy to just fire up Kies Air and do it over wifi. Speed is blazing, as fast as your network. And I like the tiles setup of KA. You can look at overview of pics, vids, etc. Or click on a specific tab on the left and look at only e.g. pics on main window. Only issue I had when I went to use it 1st time to download pics was a Java warning IIRC. I updated Java on my lappy, rebooted it, good to go.

edit: reading this link reminded me that Java was needed to download multiple files. Otherwise restricted to one at a time.
