I read somewhere that sprint doesnt really have 4g. they have a faster verzion of the regular 3g but instead of explaining the confusing system to the general public they call it 4g...

This is wrong. Technically, 4G is speeds of 100Mbps as set forth by the International Telecommunications Union. That means that even LTE is not 4G. LTE is really 3GPP LTE which stands for 3rd generation partnership project long term evolution.

To customers, it makes sense to call LTE 4G because it is much faster than 3G

However, this is boring so lets go back to talking about whose modded phone has more g in it.

Also incorrect. 3GPP is the standards body, but is not tied to 3G. 3GPP has consumed and reissued most all TIA and other standard body specs and is now the core of current and future standards management for wireless devices operating in the band classes recognized by global frequency assignments for mobile devices.

Current WiMax and LTE deployments, are technically 3.9G. For LTE, REL8 and 9 are being implemented. As you mentioned, 100Mbps is required for 4G. For this, Release 10 of the LTE spec is required, and is almost through all the workgroups.

I wonder if the hardware is actually different; many people already presume it's as simple as swapping in a 4G radio but has anyone actually looked into it? Theoretically it's completely possible that all their later CDMA phones are 4g capable and just disabled; instead of buying two different radios just have all of them use the same radio(save money and reduce "tooling" costs?). AMD did something similar with many of the 3-core processor(IIRC some dual core too?); they were actually 4-core processors with a disabled core(mainly due to 1 bad core but plenty still had good cores).

Also, maybe this would mean those thinking of swapping in a 4G radio wouldn't have to worry about new programming?

It went through FCC cert with no mention of 4G radio so no 4G.
