Can LauncherPro get any more awesome?

Maybe its all in my head, but I think LauncherPro is faster and more responsive. You can also change the number of icons you can put on each screen, so that is already reason enough for me.

As for the unread, at this point, its just a matter of habit to look at the icon to see a notification bubble. I never really use the dropdown menu for notifications.

I made a post on the LauncherPro forums about adding that feature and as far as I know, the one dev said he's working on it.
Thanks for contacting the dev about that. If he gets 1x1 widgets in the dock (or at least counters for GMail, missed calls/voicemail/text, Gtalk, etc.) working, then I'll be sold. I'm a little annoyed it didn't default to 7 screens though, because I set mine up with only 3 enabled, and now everything is uncentered.

Also: the IS a major advantage to the bubbles over the notifications! Notifications are one-time notices, whereas the bubbles can be a constant (but less obtrusive) reminder that you have notices to check. For example: you see "oh, I have 2 missed calls, 1 voicemail, 3 texts and 4 emails. I'll have to get to those later, but my notification bar is getting crowded, so clear all." You'll still have the counters on the appropriate icons this way.

I won't list every feature LauncherPro offers over Sense, because there are many. I will just list the ones that I actually use for practical reasons:

1. Instead of only using 2 of 3 buttons in the Sense dock (the App drawer arrow and the Dialer... who uses the plus button? just long press the screen), with LauncherPro I can get 5 buttons that I use all the time (Dialer, Messages, App Drawer, Gmail, Browser)

2. For uninstalling apps, I don't have to go through menus to get to my applications list, or pull up the market, or use an uninstaller app. I simply drag an icon to the trash can at the bottom and hold it there for a second, and it asks if I want to uninstall. Quickest and easiest way to uninstall an app.

3. I can disable the nameplates for icons on the home screens. So many great apps, so many horrible names. EStrong's File Explorer? Horrible name. Not to mention the nameplate is only big enough to show half the name. And I'm sure after having an app for a day, we become accustomed to visually recognizing it by its icon. We don't read the nameplate and go, "Ah, here is my Gmail." We simply see the Gmail icon. So I turn nameplates off.

4. With nameplates off, things look a little too spaced out. Luckily I can opt to have five rows of icons instead of four. Things fit much nicer that way.

5. (This one is a long one, but so awesome) I can disable the wallpaper from scrolling. Now, a scrolling background is one of the cool features of the Android OS, so typically I wouldn't want to disable it. But say someone sends me a portrait oriented pic taken from their iPhone that I want to use as a background. Well, this will be easier to explain with an example...

Original image below (768x1024)
squirrel.jpg

Now when we want to select this as our background, we are forced to crop at 960x800, a 6:5 ratio (because the wallpaper must scroll) which is slightly landscape oriented, and larger than the original image in terms of width. Trying to use this as a background would look something like below:
squirrel1.jpg

The result is below. We lose a large portion of the top and bottom of the image, as well as a loss in quality due to enlarging an already low quality image.
squirrel2.jpg

In LauncherPro we can disable wallpaper scrolling. So we simply need to bring the original image into an image editor and add some blank space to the left and right, to make the image meet the 6:5 ratio. The resulting image is 1229x1024 pixels, as below:
squirrel3.jpg

And so our final wallpaper on the phone looks like this. It actually shrinks a bit instead of enlarging, to fit 1229x1024 as 960x800, so the perceived quality increases (only slightly heh). We also only lose a small amount on the left and right sides, nothing on the top and bottom, and the black areas that were added previously will never be seen because the wallpaper doesn't scroll. SUCCESS!

As I said, those are just the five reasons I actually feel like I need LauncherPro. There are other perks such as 3D app drawers, customizing the dock icons and appearance, and scroll speed adjustments that are just icing on the cake. But those don't affect my day to day use like the five reasons I listed do.

Great thread guys. How are you guys switching between the two Launchers? I want to test it out, but after giving the option of keeping Sense as my default, I haven't been able to get Launcher Pro up and running anymore.

You can either download a home switcher app (not sure what it's called, maybe home switcher heh), or you can go into Settings > Applications > Manage Applications and find HTC Sense and tap on that and then tap "Clear Defaults."

I am still getting a lot of FC's, especially when closing apps or rotating from landscape to portrait. I was using an app called wallswitch to change wallpapers every minute so I might try to disable that and see what happens. I keep playing with HTC, ADW, and LauncherPro and keep coming back to LP.

I still haven't had any FCs, but I mean it's going to be REALLY difficult to narrow down what could be causing it. Who knows what odd combination of apps and settings could be the culprit. Pretty much got to trial and error it. :(

That would be nice, actually, if in a future version of the OS there could be some sort of detailed information that would pop up when an app FCs explaining the cause.

couldn't seem to use speed dials with LP. Had to click again in the window to bring up "Enter Name or number" in the dialer window in order to get it to work. Otherwise window is blank, so i've had to switch back to adw until I can get this resolved. Anyone else seen this?

I'm also having speed dial problems. Seems my dialer has to be open for about 5 seconds before I can attempt to use the speed dial. Very annoying but not convinced its LP yet.

Edit: ok after some testing I'm totally convinced its LP. Switched back to sense and rebooted and speed dial works fine.

Speed dial works fine for me. Based on something DodgerinNH said, for those of you having trouble with speed dial, when you bring up the dialer do you see this:

"Enter name or number. Tap to see smart dial tips."

Or just nothing but the number pad and call history?

I don't get the wallpaper thing. I mean, it's neat, but people are acting like it's such a big deal, as though the 960x800 walls were so horrible to contend with.

But then, that's probably because I get all my walls from 4walled and then just crop as needed.

The "Home Switcher" app in the marketplace allows you to easily switch and swap defaults with just 1 click.

I'm also having speed dial issues with LP. This is very annoying, as I access VM using speed dial #1. Most of the time it doesn't dial when I long press the 1 key. I have to delete the 1, then long press 1 again for it to work. What gives?

To those of you with speed dial issues:

1. Long press on the dialer icon in the dock.
2. When the window pops up, choose Applications.
3. Scroll down and choose Phone.
4. Pick an icon and you're done.

This should resolve your speed dial issues.

I don't know why, but when you use the phone dialer that comes with a fresh LP install, it brings up the dialer but doesn't have the "Enter name or number. Tap to see smart dial tips." You have to hit backspace to see that. To get the "normal" dialer that we're all used to, we have to manually put it on the dock as described in the steps above.

To those of you with force close issues:

Head over to the LauncherPro website and post in their bug forum.

LauncherPro Forum • View forum - Bug reports

Fede is very helpful. You can get an app like SendLog (SendLog - Android app on AppBrain) which will give you the information related to the force close. Post that up and Fede will probably have a look for you.

Based on another post there, FC issues seem to be due to lack of memory. Running all 7 screens packed with widgets and the 3D app drawer and five rows of icons seems to cause FC issues it seems. At least for some phones. Maybe that's not the culprit on our Incredibles. I do know that I don't use the 3D app drawer, nor do I use any widgets except for WiFi/GPS/Bluetooth/Brightness toggles. And I've never had a single FC. So I suspect that may be it...

I get an FC every single time I try to set a custom icon in the dock. That's the only time. Wish I had a clue why.
I haven't tried any custom icons, but try checking the bug forum over on the LauncherPro site. It is very helpful.

After some reading, most people's force closes are indeed due to memory limits. For those who like 7 screens packed with widgets, LauncherPro might not be able to deliver. Since HTC can control the OS, they can override the default amount of memory an app is allocated by the default Android OS (24mb). So when running Sense, you can have 7 screens and backflipping widgets and all that. LauncherPro is limited to 24mb unfortunately. Perhaps there would be a workaround on a rooted phone, I don't know. Until then we'll have to wait for the developer to figure out ways to cram more code into less memory.

Or wait for whatever comes after Froyo, because that too limits apps to 24mb.

Oh, and one other thing that may help reduce FCs for those of you having trouble, based on what I've read. As I'm sure you noticed the first time you hopped into LauncherPro, all your home screens were now empty. Well, they were just empty in LauncherPro! Switch back into Sense and clear off all THOSE home screens. Should free things up some for LauncherPro.

I just so happened to have already done that when I first got LP. I'm a bit OCD, so the idea of having widgets and icons on screens that I would never access again bothered me, so I cleared off all my Sense screens before leaving it haha. Perhaps that's part of the reason I haven't FCed.

unless i'm missing something. one thing that would be great is have a profile (different backgrounds/home screen setups) that we can save and go back and forth to like with sense ui. can we do this?

I gave Launcher Pro a shot for about a day. I'm back at Sense UI. I know its all preference.. but I'm just already used to Sense and everything works perfectly for me. I love the clock/weather/calendar widget and the favorites widget. Above all else, I like being able to scroll through my home screens with the optical (I'm guessing Launcher Pro has a way to activate this, but I didn't get that into it). I admit, it does look nice and clean and I love the lower bar being able to create any shortcuts I want.. but something about Sense and not having to redo all my widgets/shortcuts/settings.. is making me stick to it. Maybe some day if I root and get Froyo, I'll use Launcher Pro. Guess thats what is great about Android, so many viable and awesome decisions.

It's not as fast as everyone claims. It is only SLIGHTLY faster than stock Sense.

My gripes below. If anyone knows the answer to any of them, please chime in:

1) You can only (that I know of) add an icon/widget/folder/shortcut to the screen you are currently on.

You CANNOT seem to move an icon from one screen to another, as you could with Sense. With Sense, you move the icon onto, say, a larger widget or over another icon (as long as the other icon is not a folder), and the "add" mode will somehow suspend, allowing you to scroll to another screen with the icon you want suspended and ready to be "put" in place.

2) CALLS. When I make a call, I can't click on the phone to see the call in progress. The phone dialer will take my to the dial pad and list of previous calls, even if there is a call in progress.

I know you can get to the call in progress by pulling down the notification bar, but that's really annoying.

3) I lost my Agenda Widget!

The stock, super large and transparent one that came with Sense. I am sure it's an HTC widget, but I just thought of it this morning and realized I couldn't find it. It was so smooth with the scrolling. I have Smooth Calendar but it doesn't let me view the agenda for the entire week like the first widget I had up.

Anyone know which agenda widget I am talking about?

4) Force Closes when I want to add a new shortcut or application. Or, it just takes forever to load the list of shortcuts/apps.

5) Bottom row icon launcher (is this the row of icons at the bottom of every screen?) is not customizable. I saw a screen shot of this with the default camera app in the icon row, INCLUDING the camera's default icon. I also saw HandCent on there with an unread counter. I WANT THIS.

Right now, all the bottom row icons show as these grey, lifeless looking icons: dialer, people, app drawer, sms, browser.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I wonder why these launchers can not have extra screens above or below the home screen. It is great to have up to 7 sceens but it takes a lot of scrol
that would be sweet

up down left right, 5 screens

please?

Dxtop does this
