Root Can someone help me ROOT my Sprint Epic 4g and put on CYANOGENMOD 10.1

Hi I just got this phone to replace my Galaxy Nexus and wanted to get 4.2 on it if possible. Can anyone help me? This phone is running the latest software (Gingerbread) and has never been rooted before. Thanks!

Hello, welcome to the forums! :)

I am confused which phone you actually have though, the Exhibit, or the Epic?

Since it is about the Epic 4G (Galaxy S1), I have moved it to that phone's Root subform. If you can provide which build number the phone is currently running, I can look for a method for you.

This should get you root:

Once rooted, download Rom Manager(https://play.google.com/store/apps/...xLDEsImNvbS5rb3VzaGlrZHV0dGEucm9tbWFuYWdlciJd) from the play store and use that to install CWM if the root method doesn't do it already.

Once CWM is installed, grab the CM10.1 rom (http://download.cyanogenmod.org/get/jenkins/30527/cm-10.1.0-RC5-epicmtd.zip)and Gapps ( http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip) and put the zips onto you phone.

Reboot the phone into recovery by holding volume down + camera + power while the device is off. Once in recovery, make a backup just in case something goes wrong. Once the backup is made, factory reset, wipe cache, wipe system, and wipe dalvik cache from within recovery. One wiping is done install the cm rom, and then the gapps rom. Once both have finished, you should be able to reboot your device and should be running cm10.1

Thank you so much!!! Everything worked perfectly. I really appreciate the help.

I'm seeing a lot of folks say that ACS guide works perfectly, but for some reason I can't get CWM to install via Odin. Odin sees my phone hooked up via USB, but when I go to install the CWM .tar file, it doesn't work. Any help sorting out why would be most appreciated.

I followed the video my (I think) BBKing blindly and it worked. Very easy when I did it. This should work for all revisions I would think as I understand it.

What have you done exactly? Download mode--> USB--> wait for ODIN to reconize--> point to the recovery file listed on the video and have auto reboot unchecked or it will undo you work.... Flash a Rooted ROM... Very improtant. When I did it, it failed the install of FC.09 MTD, then booted into a later recovery and it worked. Maybe it pushed an updated recovery on to my phone for me, I don't know. Anyway, You might want to replace the recovery listed with one of the 6.XXX versions.

When I go to lunch I'll (if I remember) post some links.

Thanks very much for the reply!

Not wanting to brick my phone, I followed the video exactly. If by recovery version you mean did I use the cwm-5.0.2.7-epic4g.tar linked in the video notes, the answer is yes. I wasn't sure if a later version would work or not. If that's not what you're asking about, let me know. I'm (obviously, I'm sure) doing this for the first time, so I'm not well acquainted with the various and many terms of art.

Dude, I'm so sorry! I got to lunch and saw an old friend and got to chatting. After that, this is the first time I got on my computer in a couple of days.

After a little research I think I'm going to amend my original idea for flashing the newer custom recovery. I think that sense the posted clockwork definately works I would start there.
Some things I think I may have done differently were things like found the updated drivers, but that's a maybe.

You might want to also download the files to unroot your device as if you have problems you might want to already have them.

Other than that, I'm sorry. I said I would get back to you and I didn't.

No worries, man! I actually used the second link you provided to get my phone back in working order when the rooting process failed. I was thinking of trying QBKing's root method again using the Epic4G Clockwork Mod ROM found here. I'm a little hesitant because if it doesn't work again it'll be another pain in the butt.

Rommanager needs root access. That won't work. Usingv ODIN will. It by-passes the kernel and allows you to load the recovery almost directly.

I don't remember if the files that you need have a checksum or not. I can see what mine are if I remember tonight. You might have something that's corupt.

Oh yeah, I understand that. I only did the re-rooting process after the rooting failed at the step with Odin. At that point my phone wouldn't work, so I had to do something to get it going again.

It's been a little while. Did you get it all set up?

Is there a way i can install cwm recovery without using a computer?

Maybe if you are rooted.
On my old phone you would mount the partition that had the recovery image and copy over the old recovery. I'm not sure how it's done on our phone as everything is done with ODIN. Look at the instal script. That will tell you what file needs to be pushed and where it needs to go. Keep in mind, this can brick you Epic. Not for someone who doesn't check their work over and over.

Yeah im rooted. I used an app called framaroot. I tried using rom manager but i heard that the kernel is preventing rom manager from installing cwm. Ive also tried mobile odin
