Can someone please explain to me what's happening?

On Macrumors, only one out of the first 200 topics is a topic about an iPhone user bashing an Android phone.

On androidforums, there are 4 out of the first 20 topics basing Apple/iPhone.

I'm honest to God interested in why a larger amount of Android users feel the need to bash a product they don't have/want, more than iPhone users. Can anyone perhaps explain this?

I feel for you, bud. I myself love Apple. I like their products, own a mac, ipod, etc. The reason I own a Droid is because I hate AT&T and don't like the iPhone enough to switch. Android has a huge advantage over Apple since they are more open-sourced. This was a big plus for me when I bought my Droid. It doesn't mean I don't love my Mac or iPod any less.

I find it childish when anyone bashes on someone or something they DON'T own. We're all big boys n girls. If were old enough to own any freakin' smartphone, where old enough to play nice!

First of all, you can't judge a entire user group by a couple of forums. I can only speak for myself, but the Apple marketing machines iPhone/iPad bombardment makes me physically ill at times. Apples ability to manipulate the tech media almost at will is both amazing and terrifying at the same time. Then there are the uber arrogant Apple fanbois......! There really isn't a Android counter to all that, so you end up with more frustration on the Android (and blackberry, winmo, etc) side than the iPhone side.

i thought you were leaving?

lol!!

Intervenient, I dont know why that is. Maybe its the underdog is coming up a lil and some ppl feel proud, i really dont know.

Maybe cuz some folks declare the iPhone the best and everybody else is 2nd, I really dont know.

Maybe cuz for a few years the iPhone was the only game in town for an overall good smartphone. Now ppl have a decent alternative to it and are extremely glad that they dont have to switch carriers for a good smartphone, or have to wait for it to come to their carrier for a good smartphone.

I really dont know, just throwing out ideas.

Exactly! They need to spend more money and time on research and development, and less on marketing. Everyone knows what a Mac is. Or an iPhone, or an iPod, or an iPad. If it was really working, they'd have a higher market share.

He/she is welcome to stay regardless of which phones they have! :)

We refer to this at my day job as "little man" syndrome.

So you make a thread that announces your departure.

Then come back to tell us we are worse than iPhone users?

Was this really necessary? I think you need to relax. Some people like to make fun of Apple. So what. Nature of the beast. Competition at it's finest.

They are trying to sue the pants off of Android and put the OS out of business. I think people have the right to rip on them.

You mean like this?

I have to say that Intervenient raises an interesting point. Think about the normal course of events...

Android owner starts disparaging thread about iPhone.
Several more jump on to the bandwagon and add their tuppenceworth.
iPhone owner joins in to put his/her pov.
Android owners start screaming "fanboi" or "troll".

It's one thing to be loyal, but to outsiders it can appear as if that loyalty has morphed into slavish devotion. Worse, it can look as if Android users are so insecure in their choice of OS that they feel compelled to lash out at anything perceived as a threat. Neither trait is particularly attractive to anyone arriving here for the first time looking for advice.

Like it or not, the impression given out can be one of elitist geeks with no patience or respect for anyone other than their own kind. That's not good for Android Forums, and it's also not good for the future of Android as a mainstream product.

True enough, but it's not quite that simple.

Android owner starts disparaging thread about iPhone in an Android forum.
Several more jump on to the bandwagon and add their tuppenceworth.
iPhone owner joins the Android forum to put his/her pov often times regurgitating Apple marketing.
Android owner attempts to educate iPhone owner about the Android platform's capabilities.
iPhone owner refuses to acknowledge even the possibility of error.
Android owners start screaming "fanboi" or "troll".

Walk into to Toyota dealership and ask to see the latest Jetta, or pull up to a KFC drive through and order a whopper. You either get a giggle or sneer. Same principle.

Oh, I don't know, it's seemed to work for many social groups throughout the history of mankind. I believe there's evidence of Egyptian pyramid builders painting derisive hieroglyphics in the tomb of Kufu about the slaves dragging stones on a sled because their carts had wheels.

Android or iPhone? - Mac Forums

I'm on a couple of android forums. I see maybe 1 iphone thread every 2 or 3 weeks. On this board, half the users are screaming like chicken little about the sky falling because the iPhone isn't trendy or cool anymore.

But Sergey and Larry can read your emails, know who your contacts are and know your browsing history

So interesting how apple/iphone haters waste their time here.

I have yet to use an android device that runs as smoothly or looks as polished as my iPhone 4.

Where's android's awesome Netflix app?

Someone as curious to know why Apple/iPhone haters are on there similar to how Lekky and his post resulted in many wanting to know similar about certain Android bashing types here.

yea, i've noticed it a bit over the last few days, certain names pop up alot in the iphone section that slate the iPhone and sing the android praise claiming it's like the second coming. if it's really that good, why come on here all the time? they either need to get more of a life or get past their insecurities lol.

Lol iOS is more stable than android. Android can be slow and laggy. I don't want live wallpapers, waste of battery. Windows did live wallpaper, it wasn't that popular. Tons of people wanted copy&paate, we got it, people were then happy. If you're so happy with android, why waste your time on an iPhone forum???

iPhone Vs Android in the media - Mac Forums

iPhone makes sleek, stylish devices which are beautiful inside and outside. iPhone has taste. Pride.

And Android devices? Oh, they sure may be much more customizable, they have widgets and all that, but comparing them to Apple's elegant design is ridiculous.

Just put an iPhone next to Gnusmas Galaxxy S and you'll get it.

You won't find any here because this forum has turned into droidboy forums. Their crap doesn't stink and they are perfect in every aspect.

/end sarcasm

sarcasm aside - I notice many posts about android phones, os, etc are posted by Apple enthusiasts who are looking to knock down the "competition" a peg or two, etc. If threads about competing OS and devices weren't posted here (and why are they anyway?) then there wouldn't be an issue

Android phones are a clunky mess. The only people that will say they are better then iphones are only saying that because they are locked into a contract and are trying to convince themselves
tongue.gif

The thing is Android isn't glamorous enough for the media. There just isn't enough people who,

A. Never heard of Android or,

B. Care about Android.

All people know is Apple and the iPhone and I want the iPhone but can't afford it, give me something that is like the iPhone.

http://gizmodo.com/5617051/dealzmodo...ant-for-1-cent

When has the latest iPhone ever been 1 cent only a month after its release? Bargain bin phones.

I have been using a Google Nexus One w/ Froyo on AT&T for a few months now and I guess I would be excited about it if I was coming from Symbian, WinMo or a BlackBerry... but coming from an iPhone 3G... I don't really get why people like this phone OS so much. The Google Voice integration is "nice", but VoiceCentral for the iPhone is just as good as the (now defunct) native GV iPhone app. The usability is mostly mediocre, the app store sucks donkey genitals (SEXY HOT ASIAN WALLPAPERZ), the multimedia capabilities are sub-par (at best), I can't search my Exchange email inbox (yes, I can't search my email on a f'ing Google phone) and (at least for me) there just aren't any killer apps to speak of over and above the iPhone other than free-tethering that makes the whole "open" mantra stick (and of course "open" goes out the door if you get a carrier-locked phone loaded with crapware).

I would never, ever consider a carrier-locked Android phone. At least with Apple and AT&T, you know who wears the pants in that relationship.

True. The sadder thing is that it even happens amongst iPhone users when it comes to color and/or jailbreaking, for example. There are a lot of egocentric people on forums.

Android Sucks and Iphone doesn't

Do yourself a favor and get an iPhone.

You can thank me later

Apple as well is not without it's demons, however their hardware and software design are still miles beyond the compettion.

Just a quick sample all 3 threads having posts and started within the last 7 days. Which not all posts on this page have. Most posts in here berating Apple are continous and have been going a while where we share humerous anecdotes and images created and provided from elsewhere. We don't go on personal missions but where do you suggest sharing Apple Comic Strips etc on an iPhone forum and becoming a troll??

The Lounge area here is but the tip of the AF.com iceberg and I can honestly say hand on heart I have hardly if ever seen an iPhone basher in the Desire forums and unless some iPhone Defender of the Apple faith type brings it up or somebody looking to stir purposefully asks "Which is better an iPhone or "Insert Android Device here" in a specific phone section you wouldn't see any crop up. If this forum were to remove this issue it need only be those threads that be removed and voila your problems gone.

It happens everywhere, stop behaving with a persecution complex.

The funniest thing I found on those threads in particular were the fact that many devolved into iPhone/Android co-owners arguing which Android device was better. lol

Perhaps you didn't read my first post thoroughly. I won't deny that within those some topics on the first page there was Android hate, but there was only one topic (the Captivate one) that was created solely for the purpose of bashing an Android device.

In all fairness it's probably a mix of enthusiasm, a little fanboyism, and perhaps rooting for an underdog who is playing catch up and succeeding. Iphone doesn't necessarily have to defend itself against anyone, they are the industry standard. Android on the other hand is working very hard and dilligently to change that standard (with great success I might add), but until it does, it will invariably be compare dto the standard, even by its own adherents. Afterall, you need something to measure your own capabilities and success by right?

Yes but I also stated that the macrumours iphone section was far more active than our lounge her which your referring to. All of those posts were made in the last 7 days over there. A lot of the iPhone micket taking here is light hearted banter taken from the blogosphere and wider tech community and isn't often derived from here. We are in general just showing appreciation for a bit of comedic talent.

A lot of the more involved bashing that has taken place has only resulted from some external party not understanding it and wading in with all guns blazing in defence of the iPhone where it was unnecessary. Such people rather than just display statistics and facts relating to the iPhone with comparison tables for people to make their own mind up and possible guidance to macrumors posts so they can get a feel for the better parts of both communities, usually display an attitude or single minded bent to cause issue beyond this in reference to "is such a phone better than the iPhone" threads.

Relax and let us have a laugh. We honestly wouldn't mind it going on over on macrumors because up until today I'd never even bothered to visit it.

...Walk into to Toyota dealership and ask to see the latest Jetta... ...You either get a giggle or sneer. Same principle...
A giggle or a sneer, and I'll walk away thinking they're arrogant twats with no respect for me.

If they politely point out I don't sell that product, and then say they sell a roughly equivalent product and espouse it's virtues, they might gain a sale however.

Same principle with these forums, how many potential Android customers walk away thinking Android users are arrogant twats with a chip on their shoulders when they see some of the threads on AF? or vice versa of course, as there are Apple zealots on MR too.

Android owner starts disparaging thread about iPhone in an Android forum.

Exactly my point. It's an Android forum, so why this unhealthy obsession with the iPhone?

Walk into to Toyota dealership and ask to see the latest Jetta, or pull up to a KFC drive through and order a whopper. You either get a giggle or sneer. Same principle.
If you walked into a Toyota dealership and heard the staff putting down the Jetta, and you owned one and didn't agree, wouldn't you speak up? ;)

All I'm saying is that this sort of thing does turn newcomers off. They come here looking for information about Android. If I were in their shoes I'd much rather read about Android's positives than the iPhone's negatives.

Slug while I agree, I must stress that the majority of users on here along with the majority of users on macrumors actually give both camps a good name with their understanding that its an each to their own issue.

However on both camps you have a minority of extreme advocates, if as a moderator and especially if your not alone within the staff environment in thinking this, you should decide based on how constructive and/or helpful their other posts across the forums are and if they are of the same low calibre as found within these iPhone bashing threads take action to remove them from the community if they are damaging our image and reputation.

However I feel they are part of the ecosystem of any community and give the rest of us reminders of how not to act even if at times we feel like it.

I don't however feel this iPhone issue would even be being talked about if it wasn't for some specific individuals on the iPhone side whipping it up. More often than not without them the rest of us would just see such threads as "Oh this noob hasn't been here long, this will fizzle out soon" but when the defenders of the faith appear and childishly start bashing (even if its regarding a feature that another brand does better) instead of explaining to the OP that this community has an equilibrium where all brands are respected and discussed in a respectful manner, then it gets us genuine Android users backs up because they are using our community to deride our product. Sounds Caveman like I know but truth of it is humanity has always been territorial and our ability and attitude toward respecting outsiders comes from a mutual respect offered in return.
