Can someone tell me why we can't get a 32 or 64 gig phone?

Sad that some carriers can not be more forthright. Apparently At&t is going to also offer the 64gb at some point. Believe it when I see it, but they are offering the 32gb- unlike Verizon so far.

I noticed that AT&T is selling their 32GB version for $249. That is the same price Sprint is selling their 16GB.

Ditto for VZW. They are charging what they did for the 32gb last year it seems. Perhaps they think they can make more margin this way. Charge same price and people that need the 32gb will be naive enough to believe apps can be moved to the sd card. Then after the grace period: SURPRISE! You have been punked, courtesy of Verizon......

Sure would be nice if other carriers where I live had better coverage. That and keep my unlimited :) Sprint and Tmo are weak in my area.

I saw that too. I can't say I understood why Sprint had their 16GB S4 priced at $250 when everyone else had it for only $200. I guess as long as people are forking over the cash because they want the phone so bad then you can't blame Sprint for wanting more revenue.

Since AT&T has announced availability and pricing of their 32GB version, hopefully Sprint follows suit. Although that would likely mean a $300 price tag. Personally I'm still waiting for someone to put the Sprint 16gb S4 "on sale" for $200 before I upgrade, then I'll get Best Buy to price match. I'm also waiting on the Google I/O this week to see if they announce anything about the next CDMA Nexus or the X Phone before I get the S4.

Sprint stores at launch are almost always higher than street price, then tend to level off after or just within about a month.

Good to know, thanks. I figured that might be the case but didn't realize there was precedent. I'm not in any huge hurry, so I'll just hold out a little longer.

With AT&T announcement, I will assume Verizon will also be announcing the same in the next few days. I really don't want to jump ship, but Verizon is in the drivers seat. They decided against the HTC One. Hopefully not to then emasculate the best phone being offered.

I was just at Sam's Club earlier and saw the GS4 for $198.88 for Sprint. Also they charge tax on the $ 198.88 not on the full price of the phone like Best Buy does. But I am not sure why Sprint is charging so much for the 16GB GS4. I bought my 32GB GS3 for $249 when it first came out. This makes no sense to me.

I suggest that to some degree each carrier looks at their financial view from a bubble. Please consider sitting in a room with a Power Point slide and showing the revenue stream selling the lower cost 16GB for the same price while not offering a 32GB at all. This forces (in their mind) their loyal lemming like (in their mind) customer install base to blindly buy the 16GB for the same price as the 32GB last year. More apparent gross margin $ and marketing and CFO all do a jig.

To Sprint, Tmo and Verizon, this makes the net present value for that product segment look VERY good. AT&T to their credit appear not to be playing such games.

Given Verizon's VERY uniform misleading effort along with Samsung of telling everybody it is an easy storage fix for apps by adding an sd card, I have resigned to believe their is method to the madness. No 32GB was planned. Might they reconsider? Only if sales are impacted year over year with the S3 along with expected growth due to their bigger install base now. This suggests a 32GB would be a reaction decision which suggest months rather than weeks later to act.

JMO, FWIW- which ain't much. Added: We could all wake up one day and VZW & others announce a 32GB before launch. You never know :) ....... Meh.

You are right about Samsung saying the easy fix is to add an SD card. They fail to mention the fine print, being that unless you are rooted Android took away the ability to install apps on SD card.

So you're right their "fix" is very misleading as many people when they run out of space for apps on their 16GB S4 only have 2 options: Root their device to use SD for apps, or buy the bigger 32GB model.

And not everyone is going to be savvy enough to mess around with rooting their device.

Hey rushmore, I thought you would like to see a few snippets from my chat with Verizon. Every once in awhile I like to check in with them to see what they are telling people out there:

David: Will you be selling the 32GB model of the Galaxy S4? I don't see it up for pre-order. I use many apps that require a lot of internal memory.
Kaitlyn: We only have the 16GB put you can install a 64GB memory card. Will that work for you?
David: Not really, like I said, I need more internal memory for apps.
Kaitlyn: 64GB card will act like the internal memory because it will hold a lot. I have the S3 I can install my music, pictures, and apps on my SD card. So all my apps are on my SD card.
Kaitlyn: Can you quote me an app that can not be saved to your SD card?
David: All of them.
Kaitlyn: Allow me to check my apps, and with a manager. Because all of mines are saved on my sd card right now.
Kaitlyn: According to my manager information, and my information (which I have the phone) you will be able to do what I am talking to you about.
David: Check again. You can put music and other media or any files you want on the microsd like a thumb drive but you can't installs apps on the microsd. If you have a few large games or use the Google Music app that caches music only on to the internal memory you could be in trouble.
Kaitlyn: If you would like assistance with transferring your files onto your sd card. We have classes for that as well.

Sigh--I like how she wanted me to go to a class about it! I sent her a couple links about the issue and told her to educate herself.

That's a key piece of misinformation that's out there. "Well you have a SD card slot, so you can save whatever you want on there." They don't know that Android has since DISALLOWED you from installing apps on your SD card (unless your device is rooted, which would void your warranty, and carriers such as Verizon wouldn't want you circumventing those would they?).

I never realized you couldn't install apps on SD until recently, up until then I figured I could always install a 64GB SD card and I'd be fine.

Pretty sad though that carriers give this type of bogus information to customers who are looking to purchase a new device. They should educate customers so they can make educated decisions on which product will best suit their needs. Nothing like being told you'll be ok because you can get an SD card, when after the fact you see your device is full and now you are out of luck because you are past your return date.

I suspect the part of the reason is because the 32gb and 64gb versions would be very expensive even if on contract, let alone full-retail... so they will probably get released further down the line, depending on individual carrier demand and etc.

The nice thing about this is that you can use it as ammo down the line if you ever need an early upgrade. I've always been able to get early upgrades from executive relations because I've been able to show them things like this. I'm never rude or mean about it, I just send ER a nice email showing them something that they provided misinformation about (with the Galaxy Nexus it was easy). It also helps that our family has been with Verizon for over 15 years.

I have stopped cutting their people slack for just being ignorant. Seems a uniform near-lying effort now. These CSR "content experts" are perhaps looking at sdcard0 and ass-uming it is the external sd card? Since the external is also mapped as well in the stock file manager app of the S3, it appears these people are on a full-on campaign of pure BS at the expense of their customers that through revenue, GIVE THEM A JOB.

Google pulled the feature out due to people card swapping and cheap sd card use. Too much customer service cost/complaints due to those people.

This could get real nasty in a few months.

Added: What is going on with Samsung and Verizon with the sd card BS? Recalcitrance, or mental flatulence? ;) :)

I got basically the same answers from Marcus. When I said, I guarantee you can remove your SD card, and your apps will still be there, he said "I don't want to get into an argument with you, but I know much more about the S4 than you do." I said that he was wrong, and disconnected before I got obscene:mad:.

I'll be upgrading to this phone, the Nexus 4, or the HTC One in the very near future, and I am psyched for real internal memory. As someone that has 1gb of internal storage on their phone (HTC 3VO), just adding an SDcard doesn't cut it by any means. I'm constantly partitioning my files. I've given up on updating apps since there is no room left. If you're a power user, you NEED more storage.

vzw will probably take heat for saying apps can be saved to sd. and deservedly so. which makes me wonder why google hasn't jumped into the mix yet?? vzw would be better off just telling people it's highly unlikely they'll need more than 9gb of app storage space anyway. then point folks to their settings screen so they can see how much app space they're currently using, just to prove the point. people are just gonna load up the same apps they have right now anyway.

that said, i doubt they'll get dinged because 9gb of app storage isn't enough (except for the gamers). where they'll get dinged is their incompetence and lack of knowledge on how the software on their flagship phone actually works. i'm a little baffled at why google hasn't clarified this for them yet. how long can this go on before google starts to take some collateral damage? they have to know by now that the carriers are misrepresenting the functionality of their software...

I have two things to "say":

1. Due to the trend of app data growth and a device being pushed for games, media and social apps with a fancy chipset- THAT and the virtual lying going on is a combo for disaster. More people will notice the storage issue, especially if no 32GB option to go to. Samsung as reference is working with both EA and Gameloft touting games that are on average 1.8GB each when installed.

2. Verizon likes Nickleback......... AND Limp Bizkit. If that ain't a mega-slam, not sure what is.

Edit: I almost removed the Limp Bizkit part due to going too low, but they deserve it.

Right. And in addition to apps growing in size, there will be more and more unique and useful apps in the future too, meaning people will gradually install more and more apps as their usefulness increases, and this also will cause more people to run into storage issues. 16GB wouldn't be so bad in and of itself, but when almost 1/2 of it is taken up out of the box, that doesn't leave you with a ton of room to grow.

I had originally purchased the Samsung galaxy s4 (16 gig)in white a few days ago as they had sold out of the Black (16 gig) version I really wanted. Actually, it was saved for me and another sales person sold it! So, I was told if I went ahead and got the white one I would get the next black galaxy s4 as soon as it came in with no exchange fees. I almost backed out, but thought what the heck, just kick the tires on it and see what I thought at no risk as they also told me if I didn't like it I could return it at no charge. They got the new phones in today and i was expecting a quick and easy change out when I overheard a salesperson glowing about having a 32 gig model in the store and I quickly asked to see it! Yep! It's true! I paid the remaining 50 dollars to upgrade with 16 more gigs of fun and couldn't be any more happy!!! Sometimes things happen for a reason. Having the extra gigs provides extra comfort for the 2 years I will most likely have this phone! :D I'm curious how many people will exchange their phones for this model or stick with the 16 gig.

I live in the Houston/Katy area in Texas

Why do I think this will not be the same happy result with other carriers? Verizon (aka The Cult of the Misleaders) in particular.

I just started a new thread before I saw this, but At&t in store has the new 32 gig Samsung Galaxy S4 at the store i went to in Houston/Katy area! I got mine just as they came into the store!:)

How much memory do you have out the 32GBs?
