Can You go Screen Comando

I ordered an InvisibleShield myself, since they had a 50% off memorial day sale. But afterwards I kind of regretted it -- my year old Zune's screen is fine, never needed a protector, and i always keep it in my pocket. My phone probably won't need one either.

I put on a sgp protector and 2 days later spilled epoxy on the screen. Ruined the protector but hey phone's good. Point is, you never know what will happen. SGP Crystal is prettymuch naked looking anyway.

I got mine on the day it launched and have kept it in my pocket with my keys since that day. The only protection i have on it is the Verizon silicon case. The screen still looks brand new.

Running unprotected since day 1 without a scratch. Of course, I understand I could scratch it easily, or drop it, etc. and damage the phone. That's why I have insurance.

decided to go screen commando... took off my zagg screen protector. will just use the verizon glossy case and nexus one sleeve for protection.

Seems kind of mixed, some swear by protection and some swear by going Comando
Depends on how much you care and what you consider a 'scratch'. I bet going naked will always scratch the screen but the scratches won't be noticeable when the phone is on. I could be wrong. I know my verizon screen protectors get scratched up very quickly.

I think something important to consider for us naked folks is the WAY we carry it in our pocket.

I know many carry it screen-in (towards your leg), but I think this can lead to more scratches. Sure, it protects the screen from running into the corner of a table or some other blunt force impact, but it puts it directly against your leg which will be constantly moving and rubbing on the screen. If you have dirt in your pockets, there you go. Scratch.

I carry mine screen-out. That way there is nothing pressing or rubbing on the screen constantly, and as long as I watch where I'm going and don't run into a desk, I'm good.

I have no intention of using a case or a screen protector. I'm very careful with my things, and I have insurance just in case.

Of course you have to judge for yourself how clumsy or careful you tend to be.

So am I clumsy with my driving because I want to wash/wax my car to keep the dirt/nicks off the paint? Am I a "car fanboi" because I like my car looking nice? Some people like their stuff to look nice, and take the extra measure (spending 20-30 dollars for cases/screens) to keep it looking nice.

It's cute how there seems to be a group that thinks they're too high and mighty for a case/screen protector. I know people like you, I have a few coworkers with MotoDroids that look like garbage now because they never got cases. Sounds like you think it's easier to be paranoid about where you put your phone/how you set it down plus not to mention the lens sticking out is the #1 way to have your DI screen broken!

So yeah you're right, for many people they'll use this phone for 2 years and at the end throw it away because it will be thoroughly damaged, worn, and out of date. Me? I'll re-sell it in about a year with it being in near-perfect condition and just buy whatever is better. The difference is your investment gets wasted because you don't protect it. Mine pays for my next phone because I do.

Get Squaretrade at least so you get a new phone replacement, Verizon's insurance is terrible and they give you refurbished phones.

Haha, you don't "know people like me." I'm not too high and mighty, I'm just going from my own personal experience. I've had ipods and zunes unprotected in my pockets for years, and they all look like they did the day I got them (except for the chrome backing of the ipods. air particles would scratch that). I don't put anything else in with them. This phone will be the same way.

And I will keep this phone for two years, yes. And I will likely throw it away, yes. Not because it will be damaged. I expect it will be in nearly pristine condition. But I also expect it won't be worth much in two years.

For some people with more active lifestyles, histories of dropping their portable devices, etc. By all means, get a screen protector. But I don't carry my phone on me when doing anything like sports or going to the gym, and I dropped my "dumbphones" all the time, but never dropped my zunes or ipods.

So I'm not high and mighty, I just look at my track record and realize I have nothing to gain from buying a screen protector or case. Especially since I have insurance.

I just got my Steinheil screen protector after going naked forever. 45 minutes later they are off and back in the case. If these things would fly like a frisbee they'd be headed toward the Pacific ocean by now. There is no way to make it look like anything other than a sofa at your grandmother's house with the plastic still on. I think you'd have to be in a space suit in a vacuum to not get dust or fingerprints on it. And those bubbles!!! What a waste of money. Oh well.

A screen protector that's put on right is invisible and you can't tell it's on the device. Unless it's those cheap ones that come in packs of 3 and 5.

For me it has nothing to do with a "track record" with dropping things; life happens and there are things called "accidents" which you don't intend on happening. I use my phone for many things, and don't intend of having a paranoid attitude around it or being the dork who is always "gingerly" setting his phone down like it's a baby. If paranoia is for you, hey by all means.

After reading several reports about the lens sticking out on the back being a perfect way to have your screen broken because the pressure from an impact pushes through to the screen, I got a case to lift the lens off the surface. Seidio makes nice cases, $30 to keep this from breaking and scratching is a great deal and you barely notice it's on the device.

If you got your warranty through Verizon? Enjoy your refurbished phone when you claim warranty. If you got Squaretrade - well then you're smarter than I gave you credit for.

Actually the protrusion from the camera lens is a bit of a concern. I want the 2150 battery though, so I'm waiting on that before I consider any cases. It might become flush with the camera that way. I'm still not convinced I need anything for my screen. :)

I did indeed go with the Asurion insurance. I've heard pros and cons for each. Square Trade looks good too. Can you switch? Or is insurance a done deal?

Yeah the extended case should help with the lens definitely. I have the 1700 Seidio battery which gets me through the day so is enough for me. My screen protector was one that you put on with water (made me nervous as hell) but you can't see it at all and I've tested keys/etc on it and it's fantastic. I love not having to worry about it and just tossing it on my desk or throwing it in my pocket.

Not sure how Squaretrade deals with phones you already own. I got my DI off Ebay and was able to get 2 years insurance on it for $80 using a mother's day discount. Comparing just the price of it to $8/month with Verizon made my mind immediately. On top of that they give you new phones instead of refurbished.

You can cancel your insurance at any time, they won't let you re-instate Asurion though after it's cancelled.

I had an iPhone 3G for 2 years, and everybody was saying back then how hard it was to scratch the screen. It was definitely difficult to scratch, but after two years of it being naked there are several small scratches on it now.

Also, the back of my iPhone was scratched to shit, so I'm using a case now on my Incredible to keep it looking as pristine as possible. I've already tried two different kinds of screen protectors that I'm not thrilled with, so I've got a package of Crystal Clears coming. If those don't live up to my expectations, I'll try another type, but I sure as hell won't leave this phone naked.

Did you remember to clean the screen first?

If you're having trouble putting on the screen protector, there are several posts in the Tips and Tricks sub-forum that can help you learn how to apply a screen protector correctly.

One is written by myself, and I was a first timer. I did two Incredibles and each went on perfectly on the first try.

YARGH!!!

Somehow I got a micro scratch on my screen(near the mouse)... I am extremely careful. Guess I should have bought a screen protector.

bareballs comando since launch. i plan on getting a silicon case, but def no screen junk. i love the feel and slim look of this phone!!!

I'm also sliding the phone into one of my Oakley pouches (as opposed to the pouch on HTCpedia) and then into my pocket (no keys or anything else in the pocket).

This combo has worked well for me so far.

I put a couple different screen protectors on my g/f's Eris and just never liked them (but playing w/ her Eris, yes her phone, made me realize I needed to end my Blackberry streak w/ Verizon). Yes, I understand I'm running the risk of scratching the screen, but my experience w/ the Eris screen protectors kinda of turned me off (and yes, we tried the cheapo Verizon protectors, Steinheil, Zagg...).

Of course, after this initial "pampering phase", I may be more inclined to slap a protector on there.

*Sidenote to OP: I think the black silicone case makes the phone much easier to hold on to (great "grippy" texture) and gives the camera lens SOME needed protection. Also, the front edges of the case protrude from the screen giving it a LITTLE protection as well (in the event of a short drop or setting the phone face down on a desk or table).

as a long time customer of verizon and a long time smartphone user i can atest to many accidents. i have owned everything from the palm pilot to the storm 2 and moto droid with my incredible on the way (i ordered it a while back so they say it will ship on the 18th) i have owned the iphone(1genx3 and 3gx2), storm 1x4, storm 2x2, bold, many palm phones, omnia x4, omnia 2, lg dare x6. and all of them have had there problems including many caused by myself. luckily i can thank verizon for being kind enough to listen to me bitch enough that i have recieved many free upgrades had phones replaced based on manu waranty and have replaced many on my own accord thanks to insurrance. with anyphone smart or not insurance is mandatory in my eyes and with verizon the advanced 5.99 insurance to cover yourself from water damage(which they love to deny claims over) it is definatly worth the extra dollar) now on the to the issue with screen protectors i didnt use one with my storm one under the notion that the screen was made of glass instead of an acrylic thinking that it would take a lot to scratch it well i was wrong and the screen scratched luckily the speaker blew so i got it replaced(2 times for same speaker issue) my storm 2 had a cracked screen due to my nephew and verizon replaced it for me when i upgraded to the incredible becuase of the back order.... i will be getting a case and screen protectors for my incredible .... the phones arent cheap the incredible isnt a fad and neither is android so protect your investment!!

trust me accidents happen!

you wouldnt buy a ferrari and not put insurance on it or not put clearcoat on a gorgeous paint job

its worth the little bit of money in the long run

Commando, front pocket, screen out, nothing else ever in that pocket. Screen protectors can suck a fat one. I never used one even on my env touch and that screen is still mint 2 years and several drops later.
