Root Can you update if rooted? Advantages of updates?

I'm curious as I read thru posts and hear people talking about updates...gingerbread, ICS...

If you're rooted, can you accept an update? I don't know how updating works...does VM have the ability to force the phone to update or is it something you download? Would it "brick" the phone?

What are the advantages/differences among the different versions? I think I have "froyo;" why would one want gingerbread or ICS, etc?

TIA for any info/input!

I'm not to sure if you can upgrade, but I imagine that it most likely won't happen. I don't think Virgin Mobile will want to update the Op. V due to the new phones coming out. if they updated it, there's no need for us to go purchase a newer phone for the newer OS.

If you want to update, flash a ROM onto your phone.

One major difference between frozen yogurt and gingerbread is battery life is noticeably increased, same as overall performance, I can only imagine how one would not want to update after just that being said. I'm not entirely sure about ice cream sandwich, seeing how we do not yet have an ics rom for our phone, all I can say for ics so far, is complete ui rework, and I'm assuming that overall performance will be increased, as well will the battery life.

If you update with a virgin mobile update you will lose your root and if your using apps like link2sd that need root access they will no longer as as no apps associated with them such as any linked apps.

OK, good to know...so if there were any updates coming/available, I could choose to update or not? THey can't force an update to my phone?

No, the update is not forced. At least it wasn't when they pushed the last OTA update for the Intercept.

Besides. 10 bucks says you'll have BACKside installed before that happens. ;)

I can say with almost complete certainty that the Optimus V will never get an OTA update. The mechanism to do it is not functional, this is known because there actually is an update from LG available for our phone, but both LG and VM upper level techs have confirmed it cannot be installed with the current setup the phone has.

note-this was one of my main motivations to learn how to build CM7 myself. ;)
