Root Cannot activate after root!

Hi guys,

I just bought a used evo and found out that it had previously been rooted.

When I received the phone I did notice a few things were off compared to my other Evo.

1. Sometimes it would not boot and hang at the HTC Evo white screen.

Anyways I tried calling sprint and activating using there hands free activation method but the phone just hangs and never activates. After checking online on my sprint account the phone does say it has been activated. However sprint data would not work, I would get an error when trying to turn wifi on and when I tried calling I got an error message from Verizon wireless?

Anyways I took it in today to sprint and they tried to fix it but told me it was rooted and gave it back to me. After reading for the past couple of hours I have figured out that it has ClockworkMod but am not sure about unrevoked.

So far I have tried flashing the latest version of Cynagon and succeeded. However once into the UI I still have no service. I

I would just like to the phone to work since it is not for me and am now trying to figure out how to unroot unsuccessfully.

I tried following the unrooting instuctions guide but it does not seem to be working.

I have already downloaded two separate files PC36IMG files, (the first one from the easy two step website and the second one from this sites guide to unroot). I also made sure that both file names were correct so that was not the issue.

Again I am not sure if this phone had or has unrevoked but I am trying the method where it does not, I guess I will now try the method for unroot if it did have unrevoked.

Also I can not follow the instructions exactly because the phone is failing to connect to PC via USB. I have tried in the original Evo UI and in Cynagon and both it will not connect as a disk drive and fails to see the evo as a USB device.

What I did try is with putting the file PC36IMG.zip on my micro SD and restarting the phone with Vol - and pwr buttton. In the descripition of both unroot instructions it sounds like this file is all you need on your SD card and once the phone goes to the boot menu it says it should recognize the content from the SD (PC36IMG.zip).
When I boot into the boot menu it does indeed look at the contents of the SD but reads three or four lines and all say wrong image like I have the wrong file or something.

I will continue trying the other methods for now and hopefully someone can give me some advice. I would really like to have this thing working by tomorrow.

Also if I do succeed in getting it to read the PC36IMG.zip what happens from there.

thanks

btw the second PC36IMG.zip file I downloaded was the * PC36IMG.zip - HBoot 2.10 - S/W 3.70
from this site. I assume this is the correct one for my phone since it matches that in the boot screen.

First off Welcome to AF!!! Make sure you're placing the PC36IMG.zip in the root directory of the sd card (topmost level and not in any folders), when you do that and reboot to hboot, instead of saying "wrong image or no image", it'll ask you if you want to update.

you could also try and flash a stock rom and see if sprint can get it working from there. the main reason they could not do anything is that cyanogen mod is an aosp rom. once it is back to sense, then sprint should be able to get it working for you. who knows maybe you could get 3g working by just doing that. i would try that before you unroot. here is the stock rooted gingerbread rom:Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!!

hope that helps.

You mentioned you have both files, correct? So I'm assuming you have the "S-ON" tool as well? Place that on the root directory of your sd card first w/o placing the PC36IMG.zip file there and do the following:

1. Power off then back on while holding volume down, after it scans for the PC36IMG.zip (which shouldn't be in the root directory of your sd card yet), choose "Recovery".

2. Once in "Recovery" choose the "Flash zip from SD Card" option

3. Using the volume keys, find the "unrevoked-foreverson.zip" in the root directory of your sd card and use the power button to select. After it's done doing it's thing, reboot. You should have "S-ON" at that point, reboot to hboot again to verify.

4. Now place the PC36IMG.zip - HBoot 2.10 - S/W 3.70 to the root directory of your sd card (make sure it's named correctly), power off then back on while holding volume down, and update when prompted.

5. You should be unrooted!

I ran the unrevoked file and it finished and had S-On in the bootloader when done.

I then was able to run * PC36IMG.zip
and it finished. Now I try to boot the phone and it again is stuck at the HTC EVO 4G screen. Why is it continuing to hang on this screen?

Is there something else I need to do after to get this to work. (Erase Clockwork Mod)

I would recommend you wipe cache/dalvik cache but you're no longer rooted (or you should be unrooted). Now that you have S-ON, take it down to Sprint and have them look at it.

As for erasing Clockwork Mod, when you flashed the PC36IMG.zip file, it replaced CW w/ the 3.70 stock recovery.

Yeah I did those things before I installed the other rom. Now I just need the phone to boot! I have a feeling I will get it to boot, it just in finicky like it was before. Hopefully it will be active once it does.

BTW for anyone who is having problems with PC36IMG.ZIP, check what your SD card is formatted, mine was formatted to NTFS from the store and once I changed it to Fat32 the file worked fine

Hey what does this mean about flash image in this post, does that apply to me at all?

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/259446-clockwork-amon-ra-pc36img-files.html

Also he talks about the versions of the recovery files. Is it possible to upload the wrong one and have it cause issues?

The "flash image" doesn't apply and you flashed the correct RUU, it's hboot specific and from what I saw you have 2.10 hboot and that's the RUU you flashed, correct?

Losing Hope,

It just freezes at that screen,

I'd sure like to get a hold of the guy who sold me this phone!

Sounds like a real shitty situation and was bad juju from the jump it sounds like, with the phone not activating, etc. Is there a way to contact the person who sold it to you and ask him what exactly he did to the Evo? If you can't I would take it back to the store that originally turned you away because of the Evo being rooted.

Yeah i'm starting to think he did some pretty strange things to this phone.
I think the phone is pretty funked up. After reading a few other threads about people screwing up there evo's after using unrevoked and then getting service from Verizon. (especially if they tried for data service)
That may explain why I was getting a Verizon error message when trying to make a call.

Finally booted and back to stock Evo but still fails Hands Free Activation. Anyone have any other ideas or reason why this would happen?

What radio version does the phone have?
Also do you have good sprint service where you are?
I know when I tried to do the hands free activation without good sprint service it doesn't work. You need sprint service and good sprint data signal to get that to work.
Maybe the radios are the wrong version, and also the prl.
