Help Cannot connect to some public WIFI networks

Mike Hawk

Lurker
Samsung Galaxy S2
Ok using public WIFI routers, I can connect to a certain free WIFI at a store nearby, but no others. I've searched this message board hi and low but cannot find any answers other than to return the defective headset! The crazy thing is, my phone connected just fine to these other wifi routers up to a couple weeks ago.. yet now, nothing!! I've installed a couple of apps in the last couple of weeks, right around the time the problem started, could one of them be the problem? Im really frustrated with this phone, never heard of this problem with any other phone except for the Galaxy S and S2.

Hi Mike,

See my reply here for a possible solution. It might simply be a "rogue" AP that's causing the issue e.g. the one that you can connect to.

thanks Slug.. but no thats not working either... "forgetting" the AP is one of the first things I tried. Its just "obtaining IP address... disconnected" in an endless loop. I'll probably just put up with this as I have no other option... paid big bucks for the phone and I love it, just hate this one major problem. I will tell everybody to avoid the Galaxy S2, get another phone (any phone) that will have no problem picking up every wireless access point, not just most AP's as this phone does.

I get that myself on rare occasions, always when returning home and the handset is attempting to reconnect to the AP after being on 3G for some time. It only happens very infrequently so I suspect that it's caused by some random combination of circumstances, moon phases etc.

However that doesn't help you. :(

Try putting the handset into Airplane Mode, reboot it, enable wifi (still in Flight Mode) and see if that works. It's a shot in the dark....

I think another member nailed it in a different thread about the S2. He says the S2 is just very picky on what SSID names it will pick up. For example he said his S2 could not find his home WIFI when it was named hotboxxxx, but he changed the SSID name to PCnet or something similar, and it worked no problem.
I'll just have to deal with the occasional public wifi name not being picked up by my samsung S2. Otherwise I love this phone, but its probably my last samsung, as WIFI is the most important feature in a phone for me. Picking up wifi hotspots is paramount, so this phone gets a D- for picking up all wifi signals.
Its been very good in airports though, I will say that.. excellent actually.
