Help Can't access USB mass storage!

I'm trying to root my phone, I know you don't need to use the mass storage to do that but the phone does nothing but charge on the usb. I've tried reseating the usb cable, mounting / unmounting the sd, right now it's set to ask about using mass storage or charge, but I've changed that to mass storage and back too, usb debugging is off but tried that on and off too, cleared the cache, then factory reset, then started over, and every combination I can think of.

Any Ideas?

sounds strange, have you tried putting shabbymod on and see if it helps?

Did you install the samsung drivers for the phone?
You need them

What does the computer say when you plug in the phone? I had a sim prob. The computer wouldn't recognize the device. Bad cord was my prob.

I haven't been able to root it cause it won't connect (at first glance shabbymod looks like a ROM), and I did do the samsung drivers, but the phone does nothing but charge when connected, it used to pull up the "mass storage / charging" screen all the time, even on the wall charger.

To answer the other post, outside of the phone charging, neither the pc or the phone react when it's plugged in. I'm gonna look for another cable but this one is new and seems to work fine (at least to charge it).
