Root Can't create Nand backup

Ok, I just rooted my 3.7 hboot 2.10 tonight using the new unrEVOked3. I am following the n00b guide from XDA.

[n00b Guide] rooting and more noob stuff UPDATED 12/22/10 - xda-developers

OK, I got everything rooted and have my permissions to S-OFF and have superuser access. I am trying to make a Nand backup. I have downloaded the programs it says I need.

Busybox
ROM manager
Titanium backup
My backup

I have installed everything it says I need to. I am now ready to create my Nand backup from HBOOT.

I get to the black screen with the green lettering. I select Backup/Restore then Nand backup. I confirm the backup by hitting the power button then it starts to preform the backup, but then comes up with this error:

Error : Run 'nandroid-mobile.sh' via adb!

Anybody have any idea what I need to do to create a Nand backup?

Another thing. I keep getting this error message:

Sorry!

The application PVMtpServiceStart (processcom.pv.pvmtpservicestart) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.

It then has me Force Close it. Anybody know what this is?

I haven't even done anything besides root the thing. Maybe I made a mistake doing this.

Are you using Clockworkmod recovery or Amon RA?

When you attempted to do this, was your battery extremely low? I found a thread about this in the XDA forum, hopefully this sheds some light on your situation.

Is doing a Nand backup from HBOOT, the same or equivalent to doing a back up with rom manager using clockworkmod? sorry i just rooted and i want to have a backup before i install a rom.

Yes. Manually performing nandroid backup in recovery and doing it using ROM Manager are the same thing.

Amon RA.

And my battery is about 55% charging through my computer.

Frenchy beat me to it, but first question would have been the same about low battery. Unplug the phone when it gets to around 60%, then try again. If you still have problems, reflash RA using ROM manager, then try again.

You don't do nand backups from hboot. There's a difference between hboot and recovery. Hboot is just a bootloader. Recovery is where you create nandroid backups.

So I should do both the clockworkmod backup and the Nand backup from Hboot?

Also, I'm at 100% battery. Still can't create a Nand backup. :(

And I am still getting the PVMtpServiceStart force close error every time I reboot my phone.

Maybe I should just do an ruu backup and start over.

No, you only make nandroid backups from recovery, not hboot. You can use either clockwork or RA.

As to your inability to create nandroid backups, how old is your phone, which recovery image are you using, and where did you get it? If you have the new partitions, and are using an older recovery, you will have problems. I'm not sure if it will cause issues with creating nandroid baciup, but still. If that's not a concern, then try reflashing recovery from ROM manager.

I've read and read and read, and what you are telling me is just out of my grasp. This isn't like rooting the Pre at all.

I have had the phone for less than a month and all I wanted to root for was to get rid of the bloatware and underclock, but I have come to the conclusion that it is just not worth it. I am getting errors from the PVMtpServiceStart all the time and have to keep force closing it. ANd the funny thing is, I haven't even done anything yet to change anything on the phone. All I have done is achieved root, installed a few root only apps, and tried to get a Nand backup.

I want to go back to stock. If you could please point me in the right direction to do that, I would greatly appreciate it.

Don't worry, we'll get you back up and running one way or another :). I understand not quite grasping everything right away. I read the post you followed to root, and it sounds like you flashed RA recovery from ROM manager. Is that correct? How old is your phone? The only reason I'm asking is because the RA you get from ROM manager won't work correctly with newer phones (they have slightly different partitions). Start with that, and we'll take it from there.

If absolutely all else fails, you can unroot, and start over with possibly an easier method. But let's not start with that.

I did everything in that post step by step. Installed HTC sync, then deleted it to have the drivers. Then installed the Hboot drivers. Installed and ran unrEVOked3. Achieved root and superuser icon. Installed Busybox, ROM manager, MyBackup Root, Titanium backup and Wifi tether (just because it was in the list). I then opened ROM manager and pressed "Flash clockwork mod recovery". Then chose "Flash Alternate Recovery".

This is where in the instructions things don't go like they should. I get into Hboot, go to backup/restore, then choose Nand backup. That is where I get the "Error : Run 'nandroid-mobile.sh' via adb!" problem.

The phone was activated on December 8th. I was at 3.30 before, then accepted the 3.7 update and was at hboot 2.10.

Now, the phone works fine. I just keep getting the error:

Sorry!

The application PVMtpServiceStart (processcom.pv.pvmtpservicestart) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.

It then has me Force Close it.

That is why I was wanting to go back to stock.

Sorry if my post rambled on. Like i said, the phone functions fine. I can surf the net, send texts, use the phone. I just keep getting the error and can't make the Nand backup.

No worries; that's good information. There's nothing wrong with a rambling post that's helpful.

Install a terminal emulator from the market if you don't have one, then type "cat /proc/mtd" without quotes, then hit enter. What do you see for your erase size? It will be either 20000 or 40000.

EDIT: If it's 20000, then try flashing RA again through ROM manager. Maybe something went wrong on the first try.

If it's 40000, then follow the instructions here to fix a broken recovery:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045

Or reflash Clockwork, but make sure it's 3.0.

erase size is 00040000

Ok, not sure if you saw my edit or not, but either follow the instructions to fix a broken recovery (will give you the correct RA recovery for your partitions) or reflash Clockwork (make sure it's 3.0) and see if it works now. Make sure you have a successful backup before doing anything else.

Didn't see your edit.

OK, so I went back into Rom manager and reflashed Clockwordmod. It says my current and my latest recovery is ClockworkMod 3.0.0.2

You say to make sure I have a sucsessful backup. Does that mean I need to select "Backup current ROM" in Rom manager?

Good. Go ahead and try that option in ROM manager, and see if it works.

FYI, here's what I think happened. You followed a slightly older (yeah, I know, only a week or so) guide that didn't take into account that unrevoked has been updated and works with new phones. ROM manager still flashes a version of RA that won't work with partitions on newer phones. Since unrevoked didn't work with any of those phones up until yesterday, it didn't matter. Now that it does, whoever just rooted their newer phones, then flashed RA using ROM manager is going to end up with a recovery that doesn't work (for now, at least.)

OK, I selected Backup current rom in ROM manager. It booted into Clockworkmod and I successfully ran a backup. It then rebooted and I was greeted by the same PVMtoServiceStart error that I had to force close twice.

Ok, good. If you want RA, for the time being, you can get it by follow the directions here under "fix a broken recovery":

[ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 SOFF - Its a Wrap Edition - Upd. 12.31.10 - xda-developers

I'm sure ROM manager will be updated to flash the correct RA eventually.

As to your FC issue, I'll have to look into that. I've never seen it, specifically, before. I'm sure if you flash a custom ROM, though, it will go away, as you'll basically be starting over.

It's not that I want RA, I was just following the directions from the original post. If I don't need it, and I am safe with just having a Clockworkmod backup then I will stay with that.

About the custom ROM, I was hoping to just stay stock. The whole reason I rooted was to get rid of the software Sprint forced on me that keeps opening up in the background no matter how many times I stop it (AmazonMP3, Footprints, NASCAR, Peep, Qik, Talk) and I want to underclock while my screen is off to conserve battery.

If I have to flash a custom ROM to get rid of the error I have then I guess I will, but I will choose one that is close to stock.

Did you already remove/freeze anything? That's a very common cause for FCs when done wrong.
