Root Can't flash a custom recovery

guih

Newbie
Hi I have a Evo and for some reason I can't flash a different recovery image other than the clockworkmod I have now through my terminal emulator. I rooted through unrevoked3 and I think I can't flash a recovery because I don't have the flash_image.zip installed in my phone. If I flash the flash_image.zip through my current recovery should it now work?

what recovery are you trying to flash? I literally just used rom manager to flash aman ra thanks to the guidance of a good friend!

Ya I'm trying to flash Amon ra, and I tried through ROM manager but even though it says it flashed it, the recovery stays on the clockworkmod

Well, let's start with this:

1) Install a terminal emulator from the market if you don't already have one
2) Open it and ype "cat /proc/mtd" without quotes, then hit enter
3) If your erase size is 40000 (rather than 20000), the RA you would flash from ROM manager currently won't work anyway.
4) If the erase size is 40000, you need to follow the instructions here to fix broken recovery:

[ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 SOFF - Don't Be a Hater Edition - Upd. 01.01.11 - xda-developers

Search that OP for "fix broken recovery", and follow those instructions. It's not that you have a broken recovery (clockwork should work fine if you got it with unrevoked), but that particular version of RA is what you'd need. I *think* it's backwards compatible, so even if you have an erase size of 20000, it still should work for you.

FYI - there were some partition changes made to newer phones, hence the 20000/40000 difference.

I checked and I have an erase size of 20000, should I still try that method? What's been bothering me is that I couldn't install amon Ra from my terminal emulator either, which is why I've been wondering about the "flash_recovery.zip" file. Plus my clockwork recovery mod is still on version 2.5.0.1 or so not the 2.5 or 3.0.0.2 even though ROM manager is saying it flashes the clockworkmod update properly.

Hm, ok, before you try anything else, update ROM manager to the latest version or, if you already have, uninstall it, then reinstall it. That will, if nothing else, give you the ability to update to the latest clockwork. Let's see if you can flash RA through ROM manager after doing that.

Darn, nope, again I updated to 3.0.0.3 and then tried flashing amon Ra again and it just booted me again into the clockworkmod recovery version 2.5.0.1 :/

Yea for sure I'm rooted I did that thing on terminal emulator to verify whether you're rooted or not, and if your rooted than your phone goes s-off right? Currently I haven't flashed any custom ROMs yet though on the phone because I want to partition my sd card first before it using Amon Ra because currently Rom manager isnt working

Having root in your rom doesn't necessarily mean you have s-off. Turn the phone off, then press and hold the volume down button while turning the phone back on to get to hboot. You can see if you have s-off or s-on from there. The interesting part, though, is that you should still be able to flash a custom recovery.

Assuming you do have s-off, grab the PC36IMG for RA recovery from here:

xda-developers - View Single Post - [ROM] Myn

So, you have a rooted rom, a custom recovery, but s-on? What version of unrevoked did you root with? I know this was a problem with 3.2, but this would the first case I've heard of with 3.3. Or, actually, isn't there an option in unrevoked to not unlock nand if you don't want to? No matter. Just go grab unrevoked-forever from the unrevoked site, and flash the zip from recovery. That will give you s-off, and I'm sure will fix your problems.

Actually I may have the done this with 3.1 if not 3.2, but not 3.3 I'm sure. I did it on the 19th of December. Anyways, thanks for the tip I'll try running it asap and let you know how it goes.

Got it. In all the craziness, I forgot to ask you what hboot version you have. That would have help figure this out too. Go ahead and flash unrevoked-forever to get full root.

Ok I successfully installed unrevoked forever and I tried to flash the latest Amon Ra (v2.1.1) through the terminal emulator but again I got that message of "flash_image not found"

You can flash the latest Amon RA 2.1.1 through ROM Manager or here.

Did you type "su" first? Either way, it's a lot easier to just do it through ROM manager.

EDIT: frenchy beat me to it :)

Yes I did, I get the "flash_image not found" message. I would like to try the other option, which is through rom manager, but to do that I have to update the clockworkmod recovery to 3.0 first, which currently has been messing up a lot of people so I don't know if I should, unless they already fixed the problem?

Flashing RA recovery through ROM manager has nothing to do with Clockwork. You don't need to update it or anything.

Oh wow I feel dumb, I managed to flash Amon Ra finally, must be because I did the unrevoked forever, I finally partitioned my sd card. So I'm going to try to now flash me some ROMs :) thanks for all your help I really appreciate it!!!
