Root Can't get to recovery menu... ???

DX, rooted with Pete's, original Moto ROM. Working brilliantly - fast and solid, with great battery life. According to various criteria, it's definitely rooted.

I'd like to do a nandroid, BUT:

When I use QUICKBOOT or ROM MANAGER to get to the Recovery Menu, the result is the Android Digger and triangle. I can hit volume UP/DOWN, but it goes to a partial menu. One selection is REBOOT, others include FLASH from SD, but there's no NANDROID choice.

What have I missed?
 
A MARKET search for "bootstrapper" generates two choices: DROID X and DROID 2.

DROID X Recovery Bootstrap is "installed" - the other is not.

However, I find no evidence of installation on the device. The MARKET gives me an "open" option, which provides access. I selected REBOOT RECOVERY and it went to a blank screen, requiring a battery pull.

BOOTSTRAP produced SUCCESS! by the way.

I think the main difference between the two is that the Droid X Bootstrapper requires that you have USB debugging enabled (Settings -> Applications -> Development).

After you install it and give it root permissions, you'll just click the first / top button ("Bootstrap Recovery"), then you'll hit the second/bottom button ("Reboot Recovery") to actually boot into recovery (as also described in the tutorial referenced above).

But the phone won't get to the green recovery screen.

However, the unit is perfectly set up, is stable and fast, has great battery life, and exhibits no faults. The only thing missing is a nandroid -- but I have a full Titanium backup plus a LauncherPro+ backup of the home screen.

There's apparently a missing bit somewhere. I could sbf and start from scratch, but that would trigger a LOT of work. Maybe I'll wait until something breaks...

I remember back when I started flashing roms that Droid 2 bootstrap was usually recommended over the Droid X variant. Never read into why though.

Well, its a bit of a mystery to me, too. Here's why: I downloaded the source for both versions and compared them. The result: the only differences are app name references and package name references.

So, I'm really at a loss as to why there would be any differences in behavior at all unless there are changes that are not reflected in the published source.

Weird.
