Root Can't install Amon Ra 2.3

Android Enthusiast
I'm working on my brother's Evo. He has HBOOT 2.18.0001 so I unlocked the bootload using the HTC Dev method, successfully. When I put Amon Ra on the SD card, I renamed it PC36IMG.zip (windows is not hiding file extensions). When I hold vol down + power it boots into bootloader, recognizes that there is a PC36IMG.zip, but won't let me update. It says:
Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<VOL UP> Yes
<VOL DOWN> No

I've never encountered this before and I've changed recoveries many times without any problems at all. Not on this particular phone though. Can anybody help me get a new recovery? (Hopefully not Clockwork)

I'm a giant fan of smelkus mod, used to use it on my Evo 4g. When I try to install it on my brothers Evo, it gets stuck at Parsing. . . [PC36IMG.zip]
for many many minutes. When I installed it on my Evo it only took about a minute, tops.

Well, I've heard of people having issues such as yours.
You may have to install via adb or the Android Flasher method.
I'll have to find the link on how to do this.
Maybe someone else will know otherwise:)

Edit: geez, finally found it, right in front of my face...anyway...click on "show" under htcdev method, then click on "show" under How to get Recovery"
You may have to download some files listed earlier on that link for adb etc.

The one is the guide is an edited version that should work.
I guess I just need some clarification. If one unlocks his bootloader via htcdev, following this guide-- http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html --
and then proceeds to install a recovery via the pc36img method, am I to understand that the particular link in that guide for a recovery will work?

What if they want smelkus recovery and decide to use the smelkus .zip in place of the one listed in the guide?

Once a person does the htcdev method, their bootloader is unlocked, s-on.
Then why could a pc36img file be installed in bootloader, if they are s-on?

I really am a little corn-fused about the whole s-on, can't use bootloader for pc36img zips..but in that guide there is such a zip?:confused::confused:
Do I make sense?

with s-on and only the bootloader unlocked, htc has limited the use for PC36IMG files. you will have to either use captain's modified PC36IMG file for amon ra.

or you can use the fastboot or android flasher method to switch recoveries with s-on. basically you will need to extract the recovery file and pull the recovery.img file from it and move it the android folder and use the fastboot command to install the recovery. or you can use the android flasher to install the recovery.img file.

With s on you the pc36 file has tivbe signed by HTC. If its not it will bit work. There is a modified one in the guide that will work.

I think the fastboot command method might be the way to go for me. Darn me for reading this while at work. I'll have to try in the morning when I get off.

o.k. I think I understand your reply even with the typo's:D
You must be on your phone typing this eh?
Thanks:)

Oh my. I didn't even notice that. And I can't even use my normal excuse of late nights :p

I am on the phone but can better explain in the AM :D

The simple reason my PC36IMG.zip file works, while most don't, is because of the content (specifically the main version) in the android-info.txt file.

The error message you most commonly see is "Main Version is older." So, I updated the main version in the android-info.txt file to match the main version that fastboot will read, namely 4.67.651.3.

That's all that needs to be done to have a working PC36IMG.zip on the unlocked bootloader with S-ON. NOTE however that you can still only use it to flash to an unlocked partition, i.e. why recovery can be flashed this way (and why the file doesn't require signature verification), but radios and other firmware cannot.

If someone prefers to install smelkusMOD as a PC36IMG file, either take the android-info.txt file from my version and replace the one in the smelkusMOD zip, or update the file from the smelkusMOD zip as indicated above.

I hope that clears it up for everyone.

That clears it up, especially for me Capt!
I understand now the link in the guide is modified to work with unlocked/s-on.
So, yes that makes sense and I can better help people...Thanks!:D

I'm so angry at myself. I tried many many many different zips by renaming them and hoping bootloader will install them. No luck. I tried the command prompt method. It worked in 30 seconds. Okay, that's an exaggeration. It took 108 seconds. But all in all, it worked! Thanks everybody!
