The character limit for a text message is 160 characters, this is probably the limit you're running into.
The aftermarket messaging apps have ways around this. I used to use Handcent, which automatically splits messages if they exceeded the 160 character limit, and it also has a character counter. I recently switched to ChompSMS, as it was mentioned that it will automatically convert a message from SMS to MMS if it exceeds the 160 character limit, which means no splitting.
