Can't update - Partition Fail

My unbranded non-rooted Desire would not update to a higher version than 2.09.405.8. It regularly reminded me about the available update to 2.10.405.2 but never installed after multiple downloads. I tried to do it with update.zip but it never succeeded.

I decided to downgrade to see what would happen and managed to successfully install 1.21.405.2 but now can't get back to 2.09.405.8 or to 2.10.405.2. Every method of update fails - OTA, update.zip and PB99IMG.

Using PB99IMG files to update to either 2.09.405.8 or 2.10.405.2 results in the same error - see below. Does anyone have any thoughts on the problem?

Parsing....[SD ZIP]
[1] BOOTLOADER - OK
[2] RADIO_V2 - OK
[3] RADIO_CUST - OK
[4] BOOT -OK
[5] RECOVERY - Fail-PU
[6] SYSTEM - OK
[7] USERDATA - OK
[8] SPLASH1 - OK

Update fail!
Do you want to reboot device?

Have you tried with the latest RUU, if not then try that method, link below for the latest RUU for unbranded phones.

Shipped ROMs Desire 2.29.405.5

Tried the RUU route and it failed with the following error

ERROR [152]: IMAGE UPDATER ERROR

The Desire reported the same Partition Update error as previously mentioned.

What now? Is my Desire faulty?

thats not an error ive seen before
it cannot access the recovery partition

is it an official unbranded device or is it debranded

if its unbranded you might want to contact htc and ask why it wont update over the various methods as its legitimate

Its the real deal alright, bought unbranded from Clove and never rooted.

Tried a few more RUU files and the only one that installs successfully is the 1.21.405.2 one which is consistent with what I found on the previous upgrade attempts with PB99 files. Desire had been working fine at 2.09.405.8 before all of this started.

I rang HTC support and in my explanation of the problem of upgrades/downgrades they said that I had rooted the phone and that it was no longer under warranty. Now, I presume my IMEI number is on file with the help desk notes that I rooted the phone.

What now? Am I stuck with a base level ROM and cold shoulder from HTC because I didn't ring them first?

PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEd off

phone them back and ask to speak to someone experienced as you never rooted and you are using thier official sofyware.
Your warranty is not void at all.
How did you manage to downgrade?

I originally downgraded using a ROM file recommended on this site (PB99IMG file) and more recently using a RUU file. I mentioned RUU files as well as downgrade in the telephone conversation and then shutters came down.

RUU is made by them lol

the reason i ask how you downgraded is usually it gives you a bootloader error on either file as you were on a higher version

you need to call them back and tell them you had some device corruption so you loaded their official RUU (remote Update Utility)
tell them you are not and have never been rooted, you applied their accredited software but it will not let you upgrade due to an error caused by either their software or hardware. Tell them if you dont get any assistance you would like to file a formal complaint as you are unable to use their latest firmware and it will prevent you for any further sense/froyo or potential gingerbread updates in the future and it is very unlikely that you will be purchasing HTC again

if they refuse to help as for their name, extention, managers name and the complaints line

Have you tried using fastboot usb mode? if not it's at least worth a try.

Fastboot USB

1) Power off your phone remove the battery and put it back in.

2) Hold the volume down button and while holding it press the power button, don't leave go of the volume down button untill you are booted in to HBOOT.

3) Now plug your phone in to a usb port, the phone should then say HBOOT USB PLUG, if this doesn't work then try again using a different usb port and start again fron step one.

4) Now press the power button, short press.

5) You should now see FASTBOOT USB.

6) Run the RUU 2.29.405.5 from windows, if the phone flashes ok the phone will then restart it's self.

If that doesn't work then i think it would be a good idea to follow Rastaman-FB's sound advice.

Did the HBOOT USB update with the same results. I thought I'd be ok with 1.21.405 (it works for a start) but it seems slower and more cumbersome to operate than the Froyo versions.

Anyway, phone call tomorrow to HTC and will play very non-tech this time - my phone is broken, help me please.

Thanks for all you help guys.

Ok, Sent the phone back to HTC and they repaired it under warranty. It arrived back today with latest version of OS, new IMEI number and new MAC address.

Happy again.
