Captihaters, say what you will about this phone

I love it. I like the people who made it, the people who sell it and Google too even. Sure, I wish a few things were different but I'm not going to continually complain. :)

I don't hate the phone, I hate the company that manufactured it.

Hate is kind of strong. I'm just disappointed. I always knew that I would be on my own for installing Gingerbread but I honestly figured that I wouldn't have had to get a custom ROM just to have Froyo. To me Samsung has conclusively proven that they can't hack it as phone manufacturer.

already moved on the the atrix =]

Already moved on the iPhone4 myself. :) I do still use my Captivate for work but yeah, Sammy really dropped the ball on this one. Other than the incredible screen and CPU choice Sammy really choked on making this a winner across the board. Empty promises, and unnecessary tweets about future OS updates really just made matters worse.

I never buy a phone expecting an upgrade. But when the vendor makes a promise right when the phone comes out and doesn't deliver? Better to just shut up and promise nothing. Some will still make a stink but when you promise nothing then nothing is expected. Promise an upgrade then you better deliver. Sammy, in the future do not let your Samsung letterhead or footprint show up on any statement where you cannot deliver on said statement. And better yet, tell your employees to stay away from Twitter.

Right. GPS is fixed. Sure.

GPS is a hardware issue. Software might mask the problem but ultimately it is all about the hardware.

Nope, it is a software issue. I have had the Paragon ROM on my phone for the last two and a half weeks and my GPS tracks perfectly without assisted GPS turned on and locks outside in 10 seconds and inside in less than 30.

Before I flashed a custom ROM, it would take me 10 to 15 minutes to lock and would lose the signal several times a minute. I turned on Google Tracks and it tracked me driving through my neighbors houses and one of the neighborhood ponds. According to Tracks, I also jumped from a point on the highway to a point a quarter mile down the road instantly.

If you ever want to experience a working GPS on a Samsung Captivate and you are in any way technically competent, don't wait on Samsung, flashing almost any ROM will get you so much more than Samsung ever has.

I went in to an AT&T corporate store today and talked to the manager. I explained that I have been living with a gimped phone/GPS and broken promises since July. I told him that I want one of the new Atrix phones when they come out because I was sold a defective product last time around. He said that I am not due for an upgrade until 2012 - yada, yada - it will be full retail if I want to switch. I explained that it would make more sense to pay AT&T to get out of my contract, sell my Captivate on eBay and move to one of the new Droids on Verizon. In the end he seemed willing to work with me to keep me as a customer. I will be very busy for the next month, so I agreed to wait until the Atrix is released and come back in to "see what we can do to get you on an Atrix."

I'm not expecting much, but I do know that store managers have leeway to make deals in extreme cases to keep a long term customer. If not I'm sure one of the other providers will give me a better Droid and a cheaper price with a new contract.

Since it is ten times cheaper to keep a current customer than to get a new one, I am sure AT&T will be willing to deal, especially since they are about to have an exodus of iPhone users here shortly.

My many years experience with AT&T is that you'll likely be successful in achieving your goals if they're reasonable and pursued with persistence in a gentle but firm manner. If an approach falls on deaf ears, find another pair of ears to speak to.

One of these days we will have the ability to choose an unbranded, unlocked, android device and pop a sim of our choosing in it and the hell with the ATT''s and Tmob's of the world. Let them do what they're paid to do-provide cell service..period. It took a generation or 2 to break up Ma Bell..now they've reconsolidated in the cell arena. Anyone remember when you had to buy your house phone from the phone company? Careful now..you will reveal your age...
