Captivate is the worst phone I ever owned

Open a Gmail account and forward your yahoo mails to gmail. You'll receive your emails instantly.

This.

Also Yahoo mail can be touchy especially if you're using wifi. Try turning your wifi off if you're using the Yahoo app and see if that makes a difference.

Ok dude. I owned the Samsung Vibrant, which is the Tmo Edition of the phone. For starters, Swype can be downloaded to any android phone, so don't worry about losing that, and the screen brightness, you should worry about losing that since that's a Samsung Design.

Now about the customization, I'm guessing this is your first smartphone? LoL!! Sorry to be so shrewd about that.

About the update things, what doesn't update?

Force closes on "certain apps" as in the-apps-that-you-downloaded-from-the-market-and-are-not-the-legit-Google-applications? I'm guessing you don't know this, but apps are different from iPhone to Android. With Android, I can easily open an account with Google for $25 and then post my App to the App Market. Just like that. It's that easy.

Its good for getting many different apps, but then that leaves a whole lot of room for error apps. I'm guessing since Apple only uses certain developers, you get less errors. As with Google, you can't have as high as a guarantee that the app "will" work.

A lot of people complain about battery life, but what are you coming from? If you are leaving a phone that had the 9 number buttons, then yes, you will complain about battery life. LoL!! I remember you used to be able go 2 days without charging your phone. Newer smartphones use more energy, and if you can go a whole day and make it back home with some battery left, you have good battery life. But if you only can get 5- hours, then yea, unless you're like always downloading something and I do mean always.

Your Yahoo mail not updating, the reason being, I think it's because it's not a normal email account. When you connect your Yahoo, it tells you that some Yahoo Mail accounts won't work. That alone tells you, you may have some issues with your Yahoo.

Try:
Open up your Yahoo inbox using the Email App
While in your inbox (not in an actual email, just the inbox) press "Menu"
You should see (Refresh, Compose, Folders, Accounts, Account Settings)
Go to Account Settings
You should see something that says (Email check Frequency)

Right there it tells you how often it checks for your Yahoo email. I guess you can see what's going on. You might have it on -Never- since the latest option is -1 Hour-

Freezing phone? Oh no!! Quit opening apps back to back. LoL!! I'm guessing you're doing that. I had that issue to. My phone would start to slow down. After being on for a while. Just like a computer. Slowing down after being on for so long. I guess your phone is low on RAM and the easiest way to fix that is restarting. This can not be avoided neither. It's actually mentioned that a way to keep your phone running at optimal speed is to shut it down at least 1-2 times a day. Like a computer, when the RAM gets low, things start slowing down. If the phone can't keep up, it usually just turns off on its own. That's what my phone's been doing lately, but it happens when I go from App to app without letting them close. Playing games and having the music playing at the same time after I had just left the market to download a cool app, which triggered my auto-update for my apps, so I'm now downloading and installing 10 apps.

And I guess your phone turning off when charging is proving my point above. You're getting low on RAM and your phone turns off since it knows you're not going to reset it. LoL!! IDK...

Sorry it's so wordy, but I just wanted to give you some depth since you was thinking about getting the iPhone with it's lack of customization features. -_-

But if all else fails, think about this. You can still buy your iPhone 4. Early termination fees are about $200+ and I think you have to return the phone. Starting a new contract with a smartphone is probably going to be $200. So that's $400 you apparently have. Since AT&T uses SIM cards, you can sell your Captivate for $300, telling people you did't want it, and then just buy the iPhone 4 and put your SIM card into that. That's what I do with Tmo. I hated the HD2 so I sold it for $300, and got a new phone for $200 instead of $500+tax. LoL!!

thanks for the info! i had an iphone 3g before this, the app that force closes is facebook, the yahoo e-mail ptoblem, i have frequency thing chrcked to every 5 min.. i had to return this phone once before, due to no sound coming from the speakers.. i am past my 30 days already.. seems like you start noticing things on the 31 days..

Using Yahoo anything was your first mistake.

No, haha in all seriousness, I understand where you're coming from. And its very hard for some iPhone users to adjust to anything else. Android's not for everyone, and the Captivate certainly isn't for everyone. Fortunately, I myself, along with what seems to be many other people can overlook the disadvantages (or pretend to ignore them for that matter), and fall in love with the advantages.

If the iPhone 4 is the best phone for you, give it a shot. Like some of the posters above me said, look into the ETFee and see what you can do.

i use yahoo because that was what i had, ever since i was a kid.. i'm 30 now..lol

Lmao, if this is the worse phone you've ever owned, then it must be only your second phone ever..

i would say in my 30 yrs, i have had 3-4 phones, i am in the military and i have been overseas stationed/deployed for a while, and i didn't see the need to have one

1. Call AT&T warranty department and ask for a replacement phone. (My first phone randomly shut off once or twice a day, but the replacement phone has been perfect for almost 2 months.)

2. Open a Gmail account and forward your yahoo mails to gmail. You'll receive your emails instantly.

how do you do option 2

Mine was really bad as well. BUT! Just got my iphone 4 on monday and loving it.

My captivate never had a working GPS from day one. This was a known defect, but they kept telling you an upgrade would fix it to try and fool you into keeping it past that 30 day mark. Also battery life was horrid. I called and complained countless times. They sent me an extra battery, no effect. Sent me a new handset, and gps actually worked WORSE Than mine.

Talking to tech support one of the ladies finally admitted that the gps was a major known issue and that they could send me 20 replacements but would be no guarantee that one of them would work. I didnt want to bother with that. I said i wanted a new phone, an iphone but they wouldnt budge. They said i could have another android phone or a win 7 phone, but either of those would have been a downgrade from the captivate.

Then one of the reps gave me a credit, and asked me to please try one more replacement handset rather than cancel ATT. I agreed, btu i had to talk to the incompetent android support (who i usually end up explaining how to do things to), and the guy swore up and down that all problems gps, battery etc... woudl be fixed with the 2.2 update thats comming later. I let it slip that i already had the samsung release galaxy S 2.2 update, then he comes back literally 30 seconds after he was telling me 2.2 was the messiah, saying that 2.2 is the reason my phone didnt work, and he threatened that it would void my warranty. Unbelievable. I told him i had 2 phones, my original and the replacement on my desk that was untouched and NEITHER ONE WORKED! Horrible customer service, i nearly canceled my att contract right then and there for having to deal with these buffoons. Thankfully the retentions people actually had some caring, and good people working there that convinced me to stay.

I called and complained and while they couldnt give me the $99 upgrade i got a brand new one for $399, and between the phone and internet divisions they gave me $355 worth of credits, after threatening to dump them and go with verizon iphone cause it would be cheaper.

Going to stay on ATT afterall. I just got my last upgrade 6 months ago but gps on it didnt work, and had to go through some hassels. Had to make about 10 calls and threaten to cancel at least 5, but finally i got a competent rep and she set it right. Going to sell my galaxy s for $3-350 so it will work out.

did you just call the At&T retension phone number, and told them all the issues your having and that you were about to leave them? you were still under contract with them? and if you canceled you would if had to pay an ETF?

i use yahoo because that was what i had, ever since i was a kid.. i'm 30 now..lol

I used to have a Yahoo email address. When I changed email providers, instead of changing my email address to the new provider I got my own domain and had it forward. Now I'm free to change email services anytime as much as I want and I never have to go through the pain of changing email address again. Only had to go through that long painful experience once (I still have clueless people who refuse to update their address books for some reason).

yeah i called every department including retention several times. I threatened to cancel, pointing out that it would actually be cheaper to pay my early termination fee and get a new iphone 4 through verizon than it would be to stay with ATT, so why would I even bother staying with them?

I had to threaten several times before i finally got someone that was interested in keeping me as a customer. There are good service reps there, you just have to keep trying till you get one.

Most phones like this require people to know more about the phone than they do unless they have obvious hardware issues. Apps doing a FC is usually a problem with the app, not the phone.

Seriously root and ROM I have serendipity 4.3 on mine and its a Nexus S clone with none of the bugs it or the Nexus have!!!
:-)

The OP is obviously not a geek, so telling her to root is not really a good option. She doesn't even understand what's happening with her phone.

It's awesome that you rooted and are comfortable with that.

But seriously, folks who "yearn" for the iPhone 4 are not the kind of folks who want to root and install ROMs.

You have to understand that while a ROM might satisfied one user's concern, it's not going to satisfy everyone. If you have to spend $200 or more for a phone and use a custom ROM to get what you want from it, why even bother to begin with? The hardware argument is somewhat invalid, might as well wait six months and get something better. That's been the biggest issue with the Galaxy S phones here in the US. They don't meet expectations right out of the box.

I don't think I can wait until jan 2012 for a new phone, I am serioulsy thinking about seeing how much the earlier termination fee is and going to verizon, or going back to my iphone 3g... If I could do this all over again, I would of gotten the iphone 4.. This expirence has just been miserable

Yes I definitely recommend you do that. After that, delete this forum from your bookmarks please. Ok see you later.

The obvious answer, and one that hardly ever gets discussed...is why the hell don't the manufacturers such as HTC, Samsung, Moto..produce an unlocked, unbranded, unsubsidized device? Are Americans so cheap that they wouldn't buy a $5-600 device without involving the likes of ATT, TMo, Verizon etc? Sad state of affairs. Wait for new phone? This contract BS is exactly that. I'll reveal my age by saying I remember the days of having to buy a landline phone from Ma Bell..those days are long gone and good riddance

I use the browser to access my yahoo email. I don't get anything in my personal account that is pressing enough for push, like my work email. It doesn't take long at all to pop open the bookmark to check it every now and then.

It could be that Android was made for this, rooting and ROM upgrades and changes if you want something dull and does what it has to get an iPhone the beauty in Android is that if a problem exists there is a way to fix it with the vast development community. If your not comfortable with that then android isnt your bag maybe WM7 or iphone fits those kind of people.

PS there isnt such a phone that does everything one wants and the way they want it. If there was all the others would cease to exist

You got that right. But I would also add another category - folks going through "custom rom fatigue". Like myself.

After a half dozen WinMo phones, and most recently an HD2 now running an NAND Android rom I am taking a break from trying to find a fully functional phone with these custom roms. Point me to one good rom that hasn't seen an update in less than 1-2 weeks? Another update, another flash. After a while it just gets ridiculous. This alone drove me to the iPhone. A nice bland device I won't even think twice to jailbreak. But at least the app store will keep me preoccupied from wanting to flash my phone.

Eventually I will update my Cappy but since it got demoted I am going to take my sweet time and find a custom rom based on the mythical Froyo Cappy update. It could be long wait.

Nice. I am going to keep my Cappy just so I can keep posting about its problems.

At least the screen is nice.

Dude the answer isn't bail. There are options I mean you can even one touch root your captivate now and upload a rom through rom manager its real easy now even for a novice.. I have gotten to the point where I love my captivate
