Captivate release

Man. No pre-orders & no AT&T corporate stores w/in an hour of me. Anybody know if the "authorized retailers" stores (that you can find on the AT&T "find a store" thinger) will be getting Captivates in stock for launch day as well? Related: still no news on Best Buy?

Here's what I would do. Go here: AT&T Store Locator - Find out where to buy cell phones exclusively at AT&T

Put in your zip code

"In Looking for something specific? (optional)": scroll to last item wireless sales and highlight

Highlight the 20 mile button

When th list of stores, you will have to click on each store and see the store hours. If they aren't open on Sunday go to the next listed store. Make a list of stores that are open on Sunday and their phone #'s and call. It will be the only sure way. If you tell them you are from out of town they may reserve one of their stock. Good Luck!

My local authorized retailer said they will have them on Sunday, but I am still going to call Friday or Saturday to make sure they have some in.

I have to figure out how to get the money for this phone, with bills and my student loans im so strapped for cash these days.... should be an interesting week, lol.

A minor update on the Best Buy front, I've seen tomorrow's ad and there is nothing in there about the Captivate or a pre-order. I can't remember if they've advertised pre-orders in the past, but if there is one, there is no mention in the ad.

There is about a 2-4 week lead time on an ad and since the phone was just announced this week there is no way it would make it in.

I'm expecting all retail outlets to have it, including Best Buy, Radio Shack, and the "authorized retailers".

My plan for the 18th is to get up, check Amazon. If the Captivate is $149 or less on Amazon, I'll buy it through them and wait a day or 2 for shipping. Otherwise, I'll be at the local Best Buy when it opens. Alternatively, I have an AT&T retail store across the street from my local Best Buy, but I prefer not to give that particular retail store my business if I can otherwise help it.

Do you guys think that people are going to be waiting out of store, in line for this phone?

I just wondering if I should show up at my at&t store a few hours early before they open to make sure i get one!

I very much doubt it. I plan on walking a few hours after open and picking mine up. It helps that I know a AT&T salesman though.

I don't think so, but don't come after me if I am wrong ;) Because each carrier is getting their own version, this isn't really a phone that people will be changing providers for (like the iPhone or the EVO) and AT&T hasn't done a whole lot to promote it yet (as of yesterday, the AT&T page still said "Coming Soon" and didn't give a date).

Plus, the guys at my local authorized retailer said they'd be surprised if there was any kind of line.

That's a very hard question to answer. Usually there will be a few, a lot of times there will be tons; there's really no way to know until it happens. If you're in a populated area like a city, then almost definitely yes.

(edit: while I was posting someone made a great point about how there are versions coming to every major carrier so the demand will be split between them all)

There's two reasons to go early: 1, you're impatient and obsessive or 2, you are afraid of all the shortages and want to ensure that you'll get one sometime this year.

I hate the concept of "camping out". I think it's stupid for video games because I've never once ran into a first day shortage (although I'm sure some have). But I'm really getting sick of none of these phones being available.

I'm probably going to ride by 30-60 minutes early to see if there's a line. If it's huge, I'll leave, if there's a few people, I'll stay. If there's no one, I'll come back after it's opened.

Only other time I camped out for something was the Wii after it had been out for like 6+ months (if memory serves) because I was sick of not being able to find one.

I, for one, blame eBay and the idiots who are more than willing to pay 50+% markups on a device that will see a 50+% price cut off retail within 1-2 years.

Just got off the phone with my ATT store and they don't have a demo unit yet. He actually phrased it as "we can't put it out yet".

He didn't know when it'd be available to demo, but it sounds like if I go for it the exchange of the Aria will be pretty easy. Just give them the Aria and $6.00 and walk out with a Captivate.

I don't think you guys understand.

Scenario A) You spend $199 (+$36) and get a Captivate.... -$235
Scenario B) You pocket $50 (or $16) and still get a Captivate....+$16

Thats a $251 difference between A & B.

But, hey I'm not trying to force this method down your throat. If you want to leave money on the table....:p Just stating the facts assuming the no-commitment price is $349.
I understand this plan and it rather appeals to me. I'm currently off-contract so I'm eligible to buy the iPhone 4 subsidized, but I don't want an iPhone. The Captivate is the closest thing I know of to what I want that also works on AT&T. And I'm always up for saving money.

However, doesn't the iPhone 4 use a "micro SIM"? While the Captivate uses a regular-sized SIM like my current phone. I'm concerned about different SIM cards throwing a wrench into this idea, or some AT&T policy I'm missing.

I also don't want to be without a working phone for any real length of time.

So what'd be the best way about this? If I go in and buy an iPhone 4, they're going to exchange my big SIM for a micro-SIM. If I'm going to turn around and sell the iPhone as new, I'll need a working big SIM to put into my old phone so it can be functional until I sell the iPhone and get the Captivate.

Thoughts?

I plan to call Friday and see what kind of inventory the "local" stores (both are about 20 miles away in opposite directions) have. I will ask if they would consider reserving me one for the first thirty minutes after they open on Sunday, because I am coming from out of town. I have a almost dead phone (you'll can laugh an old very worn out Cingular 3125 that is on life support) and I am going to have to get a phone ASAP.

Plan B if inventory is nil and they won't reserve one I will proabaly order online.

Hmmm. I could have sworn that ATT had officially announced no mail-in-rebate for the Captivate but now I can only find a few third-party confirmations, and the ATT store rep said that wasn't officially announced yet.

yeah just go to at&t next sunday and buy the captivate.

The "normal" operating procedure(except iPhone) for AT&T is to announce a phone on Monday and start selling on the following Sunday. They announced it on facebook, but have not changed their site info or done a press release. My guess is the site will change tomorrow, people who gave their email for update will get a email and their will be an offical press release.

I think availablity may be pretty good. The Droid X and the Vibrant both launch on July 15. The real wild card in this is there are some very unhappy iPhone 4 owners that may be interested in the Captivate before their thirty days are up.

Then there are Aria owners that might want to trade also.

lol... Oh man... I bet there's a story there...

I just hate how I get the "hard sell" every time I walk into the place on devices that don't fit my need or disgustingly overpriced accessories. And how 90% of the time, the corporate stores have a much higher price on the devices.

Also I watched a customer walk in and ask to seewhat phones they had for free and the rep pointed them to the one POS Nokia they had for free. The customer said Best Buy had something like 5 phones for free, to which the rep said they just didn't have the shelf space. After the customer left, I went to that rep and said, "I'm on to your scam. You guys have 3 of every phone you carry on the walls, which is a small percent of the phones AT&T carries. You have an entire wall of Blackberries, and half a wall for the iPhone. If you reduced that three to one or two, you'd have no space problems." The guy just looked at me and didn't say anything.

Not to get to off topic but you do realize that if it is a corporate store we have no control over our pricing. The prices change usually monthly and for example my market currently has no "free" phones in-store. It has nothing to do with shelf space. It is just a rep talking out of their ass.

Back on topic, we don't have exact numbers yet but we are expecting probably 10 or less and I'm in a smaller store. I think we had like 5 Aria's on launch for example.
