Captivate release

$349 no contract? How in the hell? Not that I am complaining. This is making me rethink getting the Droid X.

Oh hell, I don't know. Opinions?

$349 w/o contract is INSANELY cheap. Isn't the Vibrant around $599? The 32GB iPhone 4 is $299 w/ contract. $50 more for no contract is a huge steal.

And if we really do get bombarded with a ton of amazing phones this holiday season, we'll still have our eligibility intact in case we want to upgrade already.

The line in the original announcement post was removed but since then (and after Phandroid wrote that article) they've confirmed it again three or so times to various people asking on their wall

Oh don't tease me like that. Nobody likes a tease. If so, i'll be getting a $20 credit after I exchange the aria. WOOT!!

EDIT: I failed remedial math. Aria is 379 so $30 back after exchange.:o

Guess we aren't remembering when the Vibrant was supposed to be $330 off contract on T-Mobile then they realized it was a screw up and quickly removed it. Still no "official" word on price but as its looking now from both internet and local sources its to be $439 off contract for the Vibrant, so be expecting a similar price on AT&T

Almost broke down and bought the Aria the other day because I was tired of waiting. Glad I didn't. This phone is gonna be badass...

Samsung Jack... It's been nice, but time your days are numbered.:p

I almost got the Aria too! I made the mistake of going into the store and talking to a rep, knowing I probably already know more about this phone than she does. She got me to play around with an Aria. I really liked it but it was too small. The fact that it runs 2.1 but can't run live wallpapers made me realise that the processor isn't up to snuff. that and the fact that it's not much cheaper than a Captivate.
Glad I waited!

IF thats the real contract price.

a) Buy an iPhone 4 for $199.99
b) Sell on Ebay for at least $600
c) Buy Captivate for $349.99
d) Pocket at least $250
e) win

quick noob question all...what do they mean when they say that AT&T will block all 3rd party apps? does that mean you CANT download apps from the android market place?

also, please explain, is it really that big of a deal, like are the apps that they block any good?

sorry for the dumb question, I'm an iPhone user buying my first android os phone.

You can download only from the Android marketplace, but no one else unless you use a work-around (which is supposed to be really easy).

They've (AT&T) said several times on fb that it's (the 349.99 price) not a mistake (to people asking whether it was a mistake)

You didn't count the original $200. By your calculation, you would pocket $50. Not worth all that trouble IMO.

Not really, because the money you make off of Ebay covers your $200.00 (price of the phone) and you make $50 cash in addition to that.

If you just buy a Captivate you are in the "hole" $200. Where as you could make $50 using my carefully calculated get rich scheme...lol. Thats a $250 swing in the right direction.

With $36 activation fee also.$16 profit. That's ballad.

I don't think you guys understand.

Scenario A) You spend $199 (+$36) and get a Captivate.... -$235
Scenario B) You pocket $50 (or $16) and still get a Captivate....+$16

Thats a $251 difference between A & B.

But, hey I'm not trying to force this method down your throat. If you want to leave money on the table....:p Just stating the facts assuming the no-commitment price is $349.

this is true. I have an iPhone 4 right now and was going to return it, but if the samsung is really on $350 off contract I'm just going to sell my iPhone 4. I have seen iPhone 4 on eBay for around $800.

There is a benefit of not tied down with a 2 year contract. And for fear of you guys abusing the "benefits", I will not divulge the details.

after thinking about it more, I would pefer to not be in contract and just return my iPhone 4. So this way when the crazy 4g phones start coming out I can upgrade!

Anyone know when this will be available for Best Buy or Radio Shack?

I stopped by a Best Buy today and asked if they would have it for pre-order and when. The rep grabbed some printouts and looked at them and said this Sunday. Although, he seemed quite unsure about it.

Anyone know if AT&T will do pre-orders? Given there is no rebate to mess with, I'm not sure there is any advantage to purchase from BB or RS.
