Root Captivate Root

i originally purchased the Captivate the day it came out. I rooted it no problem by downloading the update file in opera mini, then renaming it,etc..I got rid of the phone for a while and just purchased a new one today.. i tried to root using the same method but it will not work.. does it have anything to do with the fact that the software is 2.1update1 and not the original 2.1??? When i rebbot im not getting the screen where you select superuser permission.. someone please help

If you simply reboot you won't get that screen. You have to reboot into recovery mode by holding down both Volume buttons and the power button at the same time, and then releasing the power button when you see the startup screen. Once here, select reinstall packages and reboot.

this is where im having trouble. when i originally rooted my old captivate i did it the way yoe described and it worked fine. Im doing the same exact thing and its not bringing me to that screen, but rather it just starts the phone up.

Exact same situation here.

I've got 2.1 update1

Holding down both volume up and down, while loading, just boots the phone as normal.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Let go right as you see the AT&T screen.

1. Hold Up & Down volume button and Power button together
2. Once you see AT&T screen, let go all buttons!
3. And wah'la recovery screen should pop up.

ya i just tried that and it still doesnt work. I did read in another forum that a lot of people are having problems with the 3 button reboot. I guess it has something to due with the date of when your phone was built. I guess im just one of the unlucky ones..

Use this One Click Root for AT&T Captivate | xda-developers

You need adb just search and install. It's not hard.

And you hold in both volume buttons, and power. The att logo displays then screen goes black. Att logo displays again and the screen goes black. You have to release power and keep both volume buttons in. It takes a while to find the right spot but it does work. I was able to while I was driving ;X

I did the entire root process straight from my phone! I originally tried to download the update.zip file with the default browser. It said "this content type is not supported"! WTF? Who makes a browser that can't download zip files?

I used Skyfire to download the zip file, then renamed it and put it in the root with file manager. Performed the steps and worked like a champ! I'm running Titanium backup now to get a good backup before I get rid of these AT&Greed apps! :D

I had trouble emailing it to my phone, so I just saved in to my laptop and bluetoothed it into my phone saving in the root directory.

Did you follow the link to the Captivate FAQ? It's spelled out pretty clearly in there. It's Ryan's One Click Lag Fix, but you only use the Root part of the program. Simple, even I could do it.

I did...I read the whole thing but just now after your slap in the face clicked on the link - " 1. Download and install "RyanZA's OCLF 2.0" from the Marketplace." It makes sense now...It looks like an updated version.

Please do me a favor and post your "about phone" stats like I provided for a side by side comparison.

Thanx!

PS - Does this update display a battery % in the battery icon at the top of the phone?

About Phone:

Model Number Samsung-SGH-1897
Firmware version 2.1-update1
Baseband version I897UCJH7
Kernel version 2.6.29 jetaek.le@sep-11 #2

Sorry, didn't mean for it to be a slap, just a gentle whack with a clue by four :)

All I've done is received the OTA update (from 6 to 7) and then rooted - for the first time. I didn't lose anything in either process. When we get Froyo I have no idea what will happen - I'm really new at all this, I'm still stumbling around trying to understand - see my signature :) Being a natural geek, I really enjoy understanding how things work, but I am truly a stranger in a strange land here.

Alright, I am trying to root a friend's captivate but am unable to get to the recovery screen no matter what I do. We have tried every variation of keys. I have held the power, vup and vdown and let go of the power as soon as we see Att. I have held them all for minutes at a time. We have tried holding one or the other volume keys. No recovery screen. I am on the Droid over on verizon and have been rooted for quite some time but I am not sure about this phone.

Any ideas?

If I root my Samsung Captivate can I still update to Froyo when it's releases in the U.S? Can you undo a root on the Captivate once it's done?

Hello everyone,

I just recently bought the captivate and I love it! But i just wanted to hide all the bloatware that att has put.

I've been reading a few threads and trying lo learn a little bit about all this android stuff, but i think the best way to learn is trying it... I dont want to mess up the phone, but since ive been reading a few threads saying that the phone can be unrooted or returned to stock.

well to my question now... I just wanted to know the easiest way to root, fix the lag and remove bloatware... and the best rom to get froyo( really like that stuff to use my phone as a router)?

Thank you and excuse my "newbiness"

Ok, so I downloaded the zip. file. Then blue toothed it to my other computer. Then sent it to my phone. No idea where I am supposed to save it to. I rebooted the phone and got to the system menu. I installed packages, but it gives me this;

E: Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(no such file or directory)
Installation aborted.

So, now what? Please help. Would like to get my phone to be a WIFI Hub so I have my lap top working here at work without interferring with the work computers...any and all help is well received!

Thank you

Upon searching I found this link;

How To: Root the Samsung Vibrant / Captivate | TheUnlockr

I found that I can get the application on the phone, but the phone doesn't allow me to install anything that is not on the android market. I also found out that the phone needs to be in debugging mode. How do I get my phone to bypass android market error? That's the last step I need I believe then my phone will be rooted...

Thank you,

vt6sp, why didn't you use Ryan's One Click Lag Fix? That's on the market, download it and just use the root portion. Search for One Click Lag Fix and you'll find it. See the CapFAQ for more info.

ETA Ryan has come out with an even simpler program, z4root. Couldn't be easier!
