Root Captivate Root

Ahhhh, sweet. reinbeau, you rock. z4 root was right in the market- downloaded it and is now installing. Sick. I really was looking forward to downloading a program on one computer, burning it to disc, putting it on another computer, then upzipping the file, then blue tooth the files to my phone from the computer, then restarting my phone in menu mode then trying to install the files from there. :) I went through all that trouble to find out there is a one click option from the market. At least I learned something- if you want to do something, probably someone has already done it and made it better. find them!

Thank you a million times! Now, how I make my phone a wifi port? :)

Can someone who has tried z4root compare the steps with the OCLF steps outlined in the Captivate FAQ?

Root - CapFAQ

I'd like to replace the instructions but since I'm already rooted I can't walk through it like a new user.

I have a Suamsung Captivate from Rogers in Canada. When I run "reinstall packages" it starts but gives me an error
e:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.

Any ideas?

I'm with rogers in Canada too... I just got my phone rooted with Z4Root. Worked perfectly :)

remove any other update.zip files off your internal sd. have you tried installing it before or something?

Do those of you using Z4Root have the leaked Froyo on your phones? According to Ryan's thread on xda Z4Root only works with 2.2 (froyo).

About Phone:

Model Number Samsung-SGH-1897
Firmware version 2.1-update1
Baseband version I897UCJH7
Kernel version 2.6.29 jetaek.le@sep-11 #2
Build number Eclair.UCJH7

Sorry, didn't mean for it to be a slap, just a gentle whack with a clue by four :)

what is Jeteak.le@sep-11 means in the kernel version here? Is it the stock kernel or changed by lag fix?

Just curious becoz I have flashed cog2.3be and when I flashed back to stock rom..I get the same thing in my kernel version...I think that might cause a problem for OTA update

I used Z4root on 2.1 although it was a bit finicky (might have just been my phone). But it worked.

Thanks for the info.

Oddly enough, I went to the Market today to possible get Z4root and it seems to be gone? I can't find it, even with a search. It's also no longer listed on RyanZA's "other applications" on his OCLF page. Weird.

Confirmed. That's disturbing. It's still listed in AppBrain though:

z4root - Android app on AppBrain

But scanning the QR code doesn't work. Maybe you can push with Fast Web Installer unless you've gotten the Market update (in which case FWI has been disabled by Google).

Yep, it's back, at least for now. Ryan's comment: "changes: put back up on the Market because Google suspended it without reason".

Interesting. I'm grabbing it now, just in case. Not sure if I want to try this or OCLF to root (which I've also downloaded, just in case). Hopefully it was just a mistake on Google's part.

Now BOTH oclf and Z4root are MIA on the Market. Weird. Wonder what is going on. They are both still available on AppBrain (donate version of oclf).

Well geez, that's going to be a pain. Google's burning some serious karma here... they crack down on rooting apps, but leave up apps that allow for copyright infringement (downloading illegals copies of game ROMs and music)?

i definitely dont like how they took them off the market but its still easy to root without it. all you need is the update.zip file

I've just rooted my phone using Z4root () and it worked (at least it said so once the app was loaded).

How do I go about removing all the crappy AT&T apps?
