Accessories Car Dock Discussion Thread

Just hit 3 Verizon stores and only one of them had the official dock. Already mounted it. Looks great and the clip fits snug and secure....Love it!

Another thing...GPS navigation is actually much more useful in portrait than in landscape. I tried it both ways several times before switching to portrait permanently. In portrait you get an extended view of what's ahead of you instead of what's beside you. Doesn't that make sense? Plus, in landscape when a call comes in or you switch to another app, everything is sideways.

I've made the case for this in another thread, thanks for stating it here, too.

Can you point me to this other thread? I'm kind of curious about this. I had an old GPS with a 4:3 screen, and got a new one with a 16:9 screen and like the wide one alot more. The map part is about the same size, but I can see alot more useful info on the side. Also with the slightly larger map, there's also more room to show the names of nearby streets. I find that especially helpful when I get off the highway into some busy downtown area.

Those cables are great! Not sure which is the correct one (Left or Right) since I won't have my DI for a few more hours, but I really like that design. Totally picking one up.

For those coming from a micro USB, Radio Shack and several online stores carry a Micro to mini adapter. Saves from buying a new car charger. Also there is a USB port that plugs in flush with the power outlet in your car and turns it into a USB port. That way you can use your usb cable the Incredible came with. I have both.

Yep, I have this one. The arm is long, and thereby bounces. A lot. Its very distracing, and I uninstalled it.
My OEM dock doesn't bounce anymore than can be expected. In fact, I wouldn't even call it a bounce. It slightly moves over speed bumps. Perhaps you had a defective one w/ looser hinges?

I wonder if this mount+holster will work with the EXTENDED BATTERY on the phone.....?
Doubtful as the holster fits flush w/ the back right now.

Good looking setup! I wish I had room for mine below like that.

Sorry for my ignorance, but does it matter the surface type / contour if I go with a suction type mount? I would prefer not to put it on the Windshield but I am not sure my dash board is suitable. It is slightly rounded and is "bumpy". Do they make different suction types for dashboards vs. windshields?

the mount I got (above) came with a separate round thingy: adhesive on one side and smooth black glass on the other. I peeled off the 3M paper, stuck it to the dashboard (that's has a slightly bumpy texture) ... and attached the mount to the other (smooth) side. Voila.

The problem with that is the sticky residue it will leave once you remove the mounting kit.

I had to take off some velcro strips in that spot (had an ipod touch cradle there, sorry) ... the spot was like nothing was ever on it... I think it's due to the bumpy texture....but it's your call.

I bought a Bracketron vent mounted version which held the phone great but the touchscreen wouldn't work in it??? The screen works fine when it's not mounted or when it's in the cradle itself not mounted but once it's up in the car it won't work. Makes no sense at all. I will just wait for a specific one for the Incredible or figure something else out.
It's not your dock. There's some sort of electrical grounding problem with the Dinc. There's a discussion about it here:

looks good, you need charger with usb port then 6-8" micro usb cable to really clean it up and get that coil out of the way.

I got a great car dock from Ebay..It has the windshield suction cup mount w/goose neck, you can also attach it to the air vent (taking off the goose neck) and it comes with that smooth disc that was already mentioned. You put the sticky side of the disk where you mount then suction cup the goose neck to the smooth disk. This will stick even on bumpy surfaces. I wouldnt worry about the residue. That is usually very easy to get off.
This mount is very sturdy and has thick foam on both sides to cushion the phone but does not block the screen at all....plus 3 ways to use it!!:)

FWIW, I was in the VZ store today and picked up the DI-specific dock. $29.99 and it's, not surprisingly, a perfect fit for the DI, much better and more secure than the generic GPS mount I had has a holdover.

The good:
- Lots of adjustability, except no telescoping
- secure (although only window or dash mount, no vent mount option)
- DI-specific means no blocked buttons or microUSB charger port
- the holster the DI docks into can swivel landscape or portrait or anywhere in between (plus for you geeks you can detach it and attach it to your belt)

The bad:
- no external speakers
- no charging cable capability, but you can still charge w/ a separate car charger fine
- no auto adjust to "car mode" like the MotoDroid, but you already knew that

Hope this is helpful.

Because it's such a perfect fit, would you say that an Incredible with the VZ "hard" silicone case won't fit in unless the case is taken off? The case is great - and I certainly need it, especially since I opted against insurance. But, it's not the easiest thing to get on/take off. So much so, that I need a dock that will accept the phone with the case.

What do you think? Will it work, or too tight of a fit?

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to go with a universal mount simply because I don't see how the VZW could fit with a case. It seems like they intend the mount to also be your case/holster, that thing just doesn't cut it for carrying around in IMO.

I may also want an extended battery in the future, so that would rule it out too.

I can verify that you can NOT fit the phone in the OEM dock with the silicon (or any) case. I bought the dock about 2 hours ago and thought it was nice, but I just picked up the silicone case, and I'm now returning the dock. No way I'll be taking the case off, so it's time for my original idea...the Soundgate M2. Hopefully this works out cause I really want to get this mounted soon.

Part of the VZW dock is a removable holster with a clip. This is a great idea, but because the phone faces out from the holster, and the holster is designed to tightly grip a naked Inc, the holster is somewhat useless. I'm even a little concerned about the effect of the corners of the holster rubbing against my screen-only Ghost Armor (once I have it installed) every time I insert or remove the Inc from the holster.
