Casio C771 G'zOne Commando

Got my Commando yesterday- impressed. Its my first Droid and first ruggedized phone, and haven't had much play-time w/it, but looks good.

Immediatly after charged, loaded Google maps and it flawlessly directed me to a destination 12mi away in an unfamiliar area. Ditto the comments on speaker- plenty loud to shout driving directions to me.

Also loaded My Tracks which did a great job of logging and analyzing my mt bike ride from inside my pack. Standard camera app took good pix at the post-ride pub crawl, but the flash didn't work as expected. In brief playing, looks like the options are either turn on the pretty bright flashlight, or use ambient lighting- need further investigation.

Disappointed that after only a few hours of use, the battery was already down to 50% (granted, it was non-stop GPS usage, but still...) Would like to find handlebar mount as well as car, and desk cradles, especially considering the short battery life.

More to come.

ps- if anyone's looking for one, got mine through LetsTalk dot com- they have them for $20 for new or renewal on current contract (vs the $200 the Verizon store wanted.) I wasn't up, so mine was $80- still great in my book! Send me a pm and I'll refer you- supposedly we would each get a $25 credit.

Got my phone yesterday afternoon. I got it activated but didn't have much time to play with it. Used it as my alarm clock this morning. Unplugged it at 7:30 am, and just now (9:45pm) plugged it in. Battery status still said 22%. I played with phone all day, playing with the GPS, settings, took some pics, played ith the video, played with the g'zone apps. Also did a couple immersion tests.

As others stated, the camera is not the best. The video was a bit choppy. A friend showed me a video he took using his iPhone while driving... Smooth as silk. I did the same on my way to work. Very choppy. Using it normal it is not too bad. Using the camera, I could not get the zoom to work.

But, the phone is tough. Dropped it a few times (carpet, but hard), and dropped in on my desk a few times. Dared my coworkers to do the same, and none would. I also dropped it in a cup of ice water for about five minutes. My friend called and sent a text to me. I also had the thermometer on... 40.7 in case you were wondering....lol..

GPS worked great. Screen looks good, very comparable to my friend's Incredible. She showed me how to get the compass off the main screen...lol. I am new to android.

Downloaded google maps and google earth. Sent and received about 60 messages, made a few calls. Watched some videos....speakers rock! And, low battery light came on as I was getting home. Battery status said 68% used for android system, 24% for dialler. The rest was for gps and display (2%).

So, overall I am happy. Texting is touchy. I am going to download a different app to see if I like it better.

The phone is very tough, and that alone will probably be enough for me to keep it. But, Casio, can you fix the minor bugs with a software upgrade? Fix the camera and video?

I thought the battery did fine.

More to come.....

Picked one up on 05/27/11; my first smartphone.
The first thing I noticed with it was the micro-USB connector on the charger didn't fit into the phone very well. When it's charging, a red LED would come on, but because of the fit, or lack thereof, this LED would be one sometimes, and off sometimes. I couldn't find any reference to this LED in the manual. Additionally, the call sound quality wasn't the best. Took the phone back on 05/28/11, and when I told the guy at Verizon about the connector, he told me they all do that. That's BS... so, I got another Commando. Then I went and bought a micro-USB cable from Best Buy, and that fits into the phone as it should.
Then I had a problem with the auto-complete function of the keyboard. I'd type one thing, and something would get entered. It took me until today to figure out how to get the auto-complete turned off. I saw some suggestions on the android furums, but they didn't really work. However, they did point me in the right direction.
Since I don't do much web surfing, and I don't play games on phones, and no social media, I've been getting about 24 hours on a charge.
The manual I downloaded from Casio's site isn't the best I've ever seen, and it appears that they left out quite a bit of info. I still have 11 days left to decide if I'm going to keep the phone, and quite a bit more testing to do with it. If the call sound quality continues to be an issue, I will get rid of this phone, and go back to the Casio phone I've been using for the past 4 years.
As I know more, I'll post more.

One of the main reasons I bought this Casio was the quality of the sound from the earpiece, far better than my incredible, which lasted me less than a week before I returned it. I may be new to smartphones but have had cell phones since the late 80's and most of them handled phone calls far better than the smartphones I have encountered.
I didn't needed this phone, just wanted a new toy, and was a bit frustrated at first, but things are coming around as I decided just to ease into this phone and not learn everything in 1 day. I did manage to get voice navigation working , was quite easy after trying many things that didn't work. I'm bit unhappy with battery life or just used to my flip phone that would stay charged forever. The camera could be better and zoom doesn't work at 5 mp, although 3mp use for internet use is just fine, the flash is just plain poor.

The second one is it comes all binged up. Bing search, bing maps, etc. You can download the google equivalents from the market and use them instead, but the bing apps cannot be moved to the sd card or uninstalled unless you root the phone.

hi. i have a few questions... have you rooted yours? if so, how do you do it? is there a site that can tell me?

i'll be receiving my new commando on monday. so i was looking up how to get rid of bing and your post showed up...i hate bing. google is what i am used to.

thanx in advance for any and all help you might have for me.

I email them to my commando, download and edit using ringdroid. Easiest method I've ever found.
