Caturday

So here is our little monster. Need some assistance tho, Rose Petal (daughter named her!) is waking us up most nights at 4am moaning at our bedroom door!

How the hell do we stop this? We have tried:
  • Radio in the room she sleeps in,
  • Extra kibble in her bowl,
  • Lots of play time before bed,
  • Lots of cuddles before bed.
Still we get these lovely wake-up calls. Clearly the easy route is to let her in our room. We are not up for that to be clear.

I just want to talk about my precious little girl, Joy Noelle (who is sleeping on my legs right now). I found her when she was ≈5 weeks old; that was on November 22, 2004. She weighed 1.5 pounds. Before bringing her into my house, I tucked her inside my shirt, holding her close to my heart. I knew that my two Great Danes, Freddie Mercury and his sister Queen, would be waiting for me at the front door--with a combined weight of 360 pounds. So I walked in and they immediately zoned in on whatever was inside my shirt. Is it a new toy? Look, when we nudge it, it moves!

I went to my den--the only room "the kids" weren't allowed in--and sat down. Freddie--despite house rules--ambled right in. I told him to leave, then I pulled the tiny kitten out of my shirt for my first good look at her(?). Oh my goodness...love at first sight.

It was late now, almost midnight, so we gathered various things for her first night, which would be spent in the front bathroom, door closed, so neither the kids nor any of my other cats would bother her. I found a 6" square gold box, filled with excelsior, that would do for a bed, then I snapped her first photos:

The kids quickly took her under their wings, and she grew up thinking she was a Great Dane.

My favorite pictures of her are when she was still little:

She turned 14 in October. At her checkup in June, my vet ran every conceivable lab work and declared her healthy. She had to have dental surgery, though, and I was so worried about the general anesthesia. My vet--who knows me well, and gets me--answered all my questions as I grilled him on the phone: "Will YOU be with her at all times? Who's going to monitor her vital signs? Will she be kept warm during surgery?" and lots more. I love my vet. :)

Joy came through with flying colors.

She still does her lifelong morning exercise routine--RACING through the house.

Here are some more recent pics:

Her favorite color is pink, hence the pink collar and tag.

I adore her.

By the way, when I first had her, I was pondering what to name her. I don't like run-of-the-mill pet names, and after having so many pets it's hard coming up with something good. For days, I kept telling everyone who asked about her, "she's such a joy to have around!" and I'd tell her, "you're such a joy to have around!' One day it hit me: that's her name! And since we were near the holidays I added Noelle: Joy Noelle. She's totally lived up to her name.

That pic of your Great Dane next to your kitty is awesome. Such a mammoth dog protecting something so fragile :D

Thank you. That's my beautiful Freddie, who was my constant companion--literally, as he went to work with me every day. He loved Joy Noelle and could often be found bathing her--with a couple of sweeps of his giant tongue. :D

Did you notice the pic where Freddie (182 pounds) is looking down at Joy? Enlarge it for a better look at the size of his head compared to her tiny body (2 pounds). That was on her 3rd or 4th day with us.

Yes I did! Some dogs just know when to be protective and when to be aggressive. Again, awesome pic :D

I wasn't sure which pic you were referring to. :)

Great Danes are rightfully called "gentle giants"--they're sweet, gentle, wonderful, BIG dogs, but they'll protect their family when need be. And, of course, that includes their feline siblings. :D

ah, I should have clarified. I was referring to the pic of Freddie sitting next to Joy Noelle :)
Oh, okay!
Do you have a pic of Queen?
Tons! I must have a million photos of my pets. :)

This is one of my favorites of Queenie; we were in my backyard in Dallas:

How old are they? (Freddy and Queen)
:( Unfortunately, they're both at Rainbow Bridge now. :(

They died on consecutive days (October 16 and 17) three years apart; Queenie died first. I was inconsolable when my Freddie died. It may sound ridiculous [to some], but he was much more like a child to me than a dog...

oh man :( I know the feeling my friend.. Had to put down a few doggies of my own. It's so sad as they don't know what is going on :(
I get choked up even at those commercials I see about neglected pets...the ASPCA ones.
