Root [CDMA] Can someone school me on rooting real quick?

soooo i just got the Evo 3D about 2 weeks ago, and this is my first android phone. heard about rooting before but never really looked into the details. im interested in the potential things i can do with my phone though, so can someone show me the ropes? from what i understand its kinda like the android equivalent to jailbreaking? i was waiting for this "S-OFF" exploit to come (i assume its like "untethered jailbreaking"? haha im too used to iOS), so i guess this is a good time to ask. what all can i do with my 3D if i were to root it now?

Welcome to the forums JCM99.

It's still early doors for the Evo 3D with regards to root, but if you want to find out what's required and how it's done, check out novox77's sticky here: http://androidforums.com/evo-3d-all-things-root/366410-rooting-evo-3d-now-s-off.html

It might be a while before you start getting custom ROMs for it though.

Over in the Evo 4G forum, there's a really great beginner's guide to rooting, which should give you the basic vocabulary.

Keep reading and researching. It will all make sense soon enough, and you'll realize that how much freedom you have with your phone once rooted.

Im in the same boat as this guy. I am reading everything and the words are all there but the order in which they are done is confusing. I will read that linked thread to the 4g forum.

Just to ask, will we be able to tether and do screen shots while still running the stock 2.3 amd sense? I cant tell if that is possible or not, its so confusing

But this is how I always research. Read a lot and learn the words, then ask questions

Once root is acquired then you can tether and do screen shots on the stock ROM. Gaining root access does not change the ROM or anything else on the phone. It only gives you the authority to make those changes. It's kinda like being the administrator on Windows. It gives you full control over the device.

FYI this s-off and root method still is not at a fill release state.
This software is a developer preview. We still haven't made it perfectly easy to use for everyone, but we want power users and developers to be able to get started. If you're not a developer, feel free to try it out anyway; but you'll have to be patient with us while we iron out the wrinkles.

so, if you are having issues, wait. if you dont understand, wait. but while you are waiting, read, read, read and understand. and once you understand try. but if you dont know adb which all users dont need, but some do, dont try this root. just be patient and learn until this has a final release. and if you cant wait and dont want to learn. no one here is responsible for what you do to your phone.
