Root [CDMA] Can we update??

My home keeps popping up there is an update and I can't get the icon off my taskbar. Can I do this update while rooted?

NO! You'll lose root :(

Go to Settings > System Updates > HTC software update and uncheck that box.

Also, if you can freeze apps, freeze updater. Should get rid of that notification.

Edit: Rule of thumb: Never, ever take OTAs if you want to keep root.

Unchecking that box did not work. I still get the notification. I just froze updater and rebooted to see what happens.

I'm surprised you got a notification. I thought revolutionary disabled OTAs by default.

Revolutionary has nothing to do with disabling OTAs. It only flips bootloader security off and (sometimes) flashes a custom recovery.

From there, it's you who flashes superuser, and even that doesn't modify any of your Android settings.

Surprisingly little is apparently changed during a full root.

Until you're either sure you don't mind using HTC's unlock, or have zero interest in unlocking/rooting via revolutionary, I would stay away from the update, rooted or not.

Good info, but I'll admit, I "lol'd" a bit at the bolded part.

I just got the ota push too. Looks like it's time to fire up root explorer. :p

edit. I'll also confirm renaming updater.apk turns the system update icon off.

I may be wrong here, but if you are running a rom based off the old firmware, it may not be wise to update to this new one, if you like the rom you are on and there isn't one created off this new base. I don't think the rom will work.

Am I off base here?

I flashed the stock ROM from Haus at XDA, along with the radio/pri and rpm, and even after a NANDroid back to 2.3.3 when I had some issues, the radio/pri updates seemed to stick. I wasn't back on 2.3.3 for long, but had no issue...so it appears you might be ok if you're staying stock.

I am not stock. I am running CleanRom 1.3 which is based off 1.13.651.7....If I update to 2.08.651.2, this rom will not work. He just came out with CleanRom 2.0 beta based off 2.08, but it's not stable yet, so I think it would be wise to wait.

Freeze worked! Thanks!

Tried to freeze it using AntTek App Manger, worked for a while, but now the icon is back. I try to unfreeze updater and it tells me that the apk can't be found.

Any ideas on how I can remove the icon?

Odd. Freeze is still working for me.

Did the icons return after a rom update?

I'll try again later tonight. I switched back from a rom because I thought it broke golauncher, turns out I apparently just needed to install a home switcher (which is weird in its own right).

Thanks

Edit, spoke too soon. Home manager doesn't do the trick either, golauncher gets replaced by sense at random intervals. Probably an unrelated error.

You don't have to install home switcher
Go to manage apps
All apps
Find sense and click clear defaults and that will allow you to pick your launcher next time you select home

And I just realized it switches whenever I press the home button. I'll play with sense options now, golauncher options don't do the trick

Edit: solved, sorry for the thread-jack. Settings > apps > htc sense > clear defaults

So roms and kernel updated, check for updates unchecked, still showing up.
I ended up freezing and apparently removing com.android.updater. I guess this was the wrong this to try to freeze... Any way to get it back?
